Thursday - Some Close Ones
May 17, 2007 - There were a number of close games with only one regular season day left before the Section Five Tournament begins. Penfield beat R-H in overtime, as did Newark in their game over Midlakes. McQuaid Jesuit won the GRALL championship and Irondequoit had a big win against Fairport.
Webster Schroeder defeated Monroe County division-1 competition Pittsford 10-4. Schroeder played their seniors in the first five minutes and the last five minutes for their final game of the regular season.
Pittsford scored the first two goals and the last two goals with Schroeder scoring the middle ten in the game this afternoon. The score was 2-2 after the first quarter and 5-2 at the half. Schroeder added three more in the third (8-2) and then their final two in the beginning of the fourth.
Doug Milano-Johnson scored the first two goals for the Panthers. Grant Catalino led all scorers with 2g-3a. Leading in goals was Mike Tota with 3g.
In the cage, senior Zach Marshall played in his last regular season game as a Warrior with 4s/4ga (50%). Junior Brendan Green finished the game with 16s/10ga (62%).
Scoring for Schroeder were Catalino (2g-3a), Tota (3g), Andy Winslow (2g-1a), Mike Barilla (2g), Chris Topping (1g), Austin Orsini (1a) and Drew Palmer (1a).
Scoring for Pittsford were Milano-Johnson (2g), Chris Kist (1g-1a), Brian Maehr (1g) and Conor McDermott (1a).
It took overtime to decide the winner and it was Penfield over Rush-Henrietta 9-8. WIth 3:06 in the first overtime, Kyle Vanthof scored after a picking up a ground ball on the crease.
Penfield opened the scoring at 10:33 with a fast-break goal. Kyle Denhoff scored (assisted by Kevin Green) during a man-up opportunity. Penfield scored three goals on six attempts at man-up during the game. RH tied up the score with a drive by Vanthof, who shot off-stick hip to score. Penfield retook the lead at 7:19 as Dan Huntington subbed onto the field, picked up a loose ball, and drove straight to the cage to score on a low shot. With 3:56 left in the first quarter the Royal Comets tied the game for the second time with an unassisted goal by Matt Moran. The Patriots scored two more goals at the end of the first quarter to take a 4-2 lead after one quarter. Their first goal (and second in man-up) was scored by Green who received a crease pass from Kyle Denhoff. The second goal was scored 0:20 and after the Patriots called a time out. Denhoff scored (assisted by Huntington) on a cross-crease cut.
Both teams scored one goal in the second quarter. The first was scored by RH as Justin Rose scored (unassisted) on a drive from the right side of the cage. The second goal was scored by James Dwyer (unassisted) with a drive from behind. Dwyer scored his goal with only 0:02 remaining in the half. The score at halftime was 5-3 in favor of the Patriots.
Rush-Henrietta controlled the third quarter outscoring the Patriots 4-2 and tying the game. The Patriots struck first with another goal by Vanthof in the first minute. Vanthof drove from the side to fire a hard shot off-stick from the crease. The Royal Comets scored the next four goals. Each of the four goals were unassisted. The first was scored with a drive from behind, as Moran scored his second of the game. The next three Royal Comet goals came in less then one minute as RH scored at 2:52, 2:14 and 2:06. The first goal was scored by Nate Delone, who took his defenseman wide out and went one-on-one to score from the right side of the net. The second goal was also scored by Delone as Brian Hantzis' shot hit the crossbar and Delone found the ground ball and made the shot. The final goal was scored by Jake Messimer who took the face-off himself, picked up the ground ball and took it all the way to the back of the net. The Patriots scored the tying goal with 0:12 remaining as Huntington scored his second of the game with an outside drive that hit the far pipe and bounced into the net. The score was 7-7 after three quarters.
Each team scored one goal in the fourth quarter. The Patriots scored theirs early at 9:11 and the Royal Comets scored theirs late at 1:11. The Patriots goal (their third man-up goal of the game) was scored by Huntington (his third of the game) with the assist from Green. The goal was scored during an unsportsmanlike conduct call and as a result, the penalty was not released. The Patriots lost the ensuing face-off and then when trying to take the ball back accrued their own penalty causing a 5-5 situation during which neither team could capitalize. The game tying goal was scored on a low off-stick side-arm shot by Rose (assisted by Colin Cornaire).
Going into overtime, the Patriot's Vanthof won the face-off. Vanthof played strong at the face-off finishing 13/18 (72%) including 11 of the first 12 face-off's for the Patriots. The Patriots called a time-out after Vanthof won the face and on the following play, only 0:54 into overtime Dwyer shot a hard shot the bounced off the cross-bar allowing Vanthof to pick up the ground ball and score his second of the game.
In the cage senior Matt McShea recorded 7s/9ga (44%) for the Royal Comets. Sophomore Brady Del Pozzo finished with 5s/8ga (38%) for the Patriots. Both teams finished their season today with (8-7) records.

Scoring for Rush-Henrietta were Rose (2g), Delone (2g), Moran (2g), Cornaire (1g-1a) and Messimer (1g).
In the first of the "GRALL Championship Day", Aquinas took a decisive 14-6 victory over Haverling. The Little Irish led at the end of the first quarter 4-1 and 6-2 at the halftime break.
Scoring for Aquinas were Marc Brondon (4g-2a), Nick Berkompas (2g-3a), Cameron Corsaro (2g-1a), Anthony Bianchi (2g-2a), Jasen Torres (2g), Austin Gorman (1g), Neil Foley (1g), Casey Vogl (2a), and Mike Gray (2a). Alan Antinarelli had 4s/4ga in 3 quarters and Kraig Heston had 3s/2ga in the last quarter for AQ (8-9).
Scoring for Haverling were Dave Harris (3g), Mckenzie Durham (3g-1a), Mike Joint (1g) and Nick Venuti (1a). Chris Wolfer had 17s/14ga for the Rams.
McQuaid Jesuit scored seven goals in six minutes to win the GRALL Championship over Livonia 11-10. Livonia took a 4-2 lead after the first quarter (extended to 5-1 at the half). After three quarters the score was 7-4 Livonia. Livonia continued to go up leading 9-4 before McQuaid Jesuit scored seven goals in 6:19 to win.
The two minutes of play were fast moving with McQuaid Jesuit scoring the 10-9 goal was 1:49; Livonia's Tyler Russell (assisted by Brian Sciera) scored the tying goal at 0:14 and Mitch Ritchie scoring the game winning goal with less than one second left in the game.
In the cage sophomore Justin Becker recorded 12s/11ga (52%) for the Bulldogs (11-6). The Bulldogs have one more game in the regular season. Junior Dan Caufield played the entire game finishing with 9s/10ga (47%) for the Knights. The Knights finish their regular season 11-7.

Scoring for Livonia were Brian Sciera (5g-2a), Tyler Russell (3g-3a), Oren Taylor (1g-2a), Chris Bausch (2a) and Gaelin Walsh (1g)
It was Newark 11-10 over Midlakes in 2 overtime periods.
The game was tight throughout with the 1st quarter which ended in a 2-2 tie. Newark took advantage off an illegal stick penalty as attackman Stephen Johnson scored 2 man up goals. Midlakes came right back and took advantage of their own man-up unit to tie the score at 4 with 4:31 remaining in the second quarter. Midlakes then took a 1 goal lead into halftime on a Glen Stevenson goal (assisted by Tyler Brook-Lambert).
Newark tied the game just 0:14 into the 3rd quarter on a goal from Eric Stivers (assisted by Ollie Smith). The game went back and forth for the remainder of the game and with 0:48 remaining in the 4th, Midlakes attackman Ben Uveges scored an unassisted goal to give his team a 10-9 advantage. A face-off win by Newark's Adam Golding keyed the next possession for his team and attackman Colin Johnson drove to the cage and scored an unassisted goal to tie it at 0:19.
The first overtime found each team with a number of scoring chances but both goalies prevailed. The second overtime went much the same until a fast break started by Newark's Ollie Smith gave his team an transition advantage that gave Stephen Johnson a shot on goal. The Midlakes goalie, Jared Schoonerman made the initial save but Matt Clemons scooped up the rebound and scored the game winner at 1:10.
In the cage, junior Jared Schoonerman played the entire game for Midlakes recording 18s/11ga (62%) for the Eagles (7-10). For Newark Josh Putman played the majority of the game finishing with 16s/9ga (64%) and Robert Hartman had 1s/1ga (50%) for the Reds (8-9). Both teams have one more game in the regular season.

Gates-Chili defeated Spencerport 8-7 tonight. The Spartans led 2-1 after the first and 7-2 at the half. Gates-Chili was held scoreless in the fourth but maintained their lead for the win.
Scoring for Gates Chili were Pat Sposato (2g-2a), Tom Sudek (2g-1a), Andrew Hilton (1g-1a), Tom Elkins (2a), Bradley Weber (1g), Jeff Fichtner (1g) and Tyler Webb (1g). In the cage sophomore Jason Baetzhold recorded 10s/7ga (59%) for the Spartans (10-6). No report from Spencerport.
Churchville-Chili (13-2) came to play tonight against Monroe County division-3 opponent, Brockport (10-5). The Saints controlled the game and won 14-0.
Defensively, Goalie Sean Kettles faced only 18 shots and made 8 saves to preserve the shutout. The Saints doubled Brockport's ground balls (49-23). The Saints defense also shut out the Brockport Man Up (0 for 5) with very little opportunity given for quality shots. The Saints face-off tandem of Doug Hemink and Keith Preston combined for 13/18 (72%).
Offensively, 8 Saints put up points and managed 10 assists on their 14 goals. The leading scorer tonight was Jamie Englert (5g, 2a) followed by Ben Rossignolo (2g, 3a) and Gino Marcello (3g, 1a). Cory Mee (2g, 1a) and Ryan Grogan (2g) finished the goal scoring while Damien Pagano, Doug Hemink and Keith Preston each added 1 assist to close out the scoring.
The Saints close the season with a 14-2 record including a school record 14 wins. No report from Brockport.
Victor traveled to Corning West who took the 11-7 win over the Blue Devils in out of league action Thursday. Although the game was tied after the first quarter, West exploded in the second taking a 9-2 led at the half. In the second half the Blue Devils added five goals while holding West to two goals.
Scoring for Corning West were Mike Tamaro(4a), Ryan Speciale(2g-1a), Scott Rose(3a), Austin Rose(1g-2a), Jay Stearns(2g),Chase Bailey(1g), Matt Astolfi(3g) and Adam Lewis(2g). Jon Fiorillo made 13s and Mano Trizzino had 1s for West (9-6).
Scoring for Victor were Eric Willman(1a), Ethan Payne(1g), Alex Rogemoser(1g-1a), Andy Savage(2g), Frank Valenti(3g). Mitchell Liegerot played in the first half, recording 6s/9ga and Cody Bennett finished the game with 5s/2ga for the Blue Devils (9-8).
Orchard Park (Section Six) scored the first five goals and shut out Penn Yan in the first half, as they won an 8-3 victory at Nazareth College.
The Quakers scored two goals in the first quarter, the first at 10:02 when Maderer scored on an outside shot at the feet of Penn Yan's RJ Wickham. At 4:52 Marrapese scored on a drive from a left sweep and a bounce shot. It was 2-0 for Orchard Park at the end of the first quarter.
Michaels was the man for OP in the second, scoring two and assisting on the third, sending the Quakers into the halftime break with a 5-0 lead. Penn Yan left the field for the halftime break, while Orchard Park stayed at their bench area. Coach Tundo told his team, "They're going to go after one at a time. Keep doing what your 're doing".
The Mustangs did come back, at the top of the third quarter. Matt Osgood scored just 0:55 into the quarter when he received a feed on the crease from Ryan Cook and scored with a wrist shot just past the OP's goalie's head. At 3:15 Michaels scored another for OP with a drive and a shot off stick low. Mustang middie, John Linnan finished the third quarter, scoring when Penn Yan forced a full field fast break clear and when he received an inside feed from Ryan Cook. Orchard Park was ahead 6-2 after three quarters.
The Last quarter belonged to the Quakers who scored two more, each on an unassisted drive, one by Jacobs and one by Michaels. Penn Yan's Ty Trombley scored the last goal of the game with 0:03 left in regulation.
It was an untypically hard day for the Mustangs who had difficulty possessing the ball. After exciting defensive take aways, the Mustangs would often miss-pass or drop a ball and end up back on defense. Orchard Park, with many big and strong players seemed at times to intimidated Penn Yan, who when driving to the goal sometimes just bumped off the bigger defenseman. There was little offensive time for PY as the Quakers routinely passed the ball around the offensive box area, taking 15-20 seconds off the clock before setting up a run at the goal. Pairing players like Michaels and Jacobs, OP would draw a double from the Mustangs and pass the ball to adjacent player who would get an unencumbered shot on Wickham who made 10s/8ga (56%). The Mustangs, who typically play the best competition that Coach Hobart can find, move to 12-5.
Scoring for Orchard Park were Maderer (1g), Marrapese (1g), Michaels (4g-1a), Jacobs (2g-1a), Lallei (1a) and Collins (1a). Ashort had 6s/3ga for OP (12-4).
Scoring for Penn Yan were Osgood (1g), Cook (2a), Linnan (1g) and Trobley (1g). Wickham had 10s/8/ga (56%) for the Mustangs.
Brandon Moynihan scored the game winning goal with 2:31 left in the game to give Eastridge a 7-6 victory over Brighton. Scoring for the Lancers were Brandon Moynihan (5g), Matt Driffill (1g-1a), Alex Austin (1g), Todd Horne (1a), and Kevin Mahler (1a). Eugene Ferrera made 7s/6ga (54%) for Eastridge (11-5). No report from Brighton.
Irondequoit held Fairport scoreless in the first and third to win 12-5 over their Monroe County division-1 opponent. The Red Raiders won both the second (4-3) and the fourth (1-0) quarters.
The first five goals were scored by Irondequoit. The last two goals of the first quarter were scored at 0:58 and 0:18 and gave the Eagles a 4-0 lead. Senior attackman Andrew Hart assisted on each of the first three goals for Irondequoit. Fairport scored their first goal at 9:57 when Shawn Runyon scored his unassisted goal. The Red Raiders added three more (to Irondequoit's one) to take the score to 6-4. This was the closest that Fairport got to the Eagles. The score was 7-4 going into the half.
The third quarter was similar to the first in that all the scoring was done by Irondequoit. The Eagles scored five goals at 11:04, 9:20, 8:39, 4:28 and 0:37. The first was scored by Tim Kleehammer from a sweep. The next two were crease feeds; Hart from Nick Kane, Drew Coholan from Hart. The fourth goal was scored by junior defenseman Jimmy Walsh who took the ball into the heart of the Fairport defense and dodged three players to shoot point blank high and stick-side against Kristoffer Sterzin. Sterzin finished the game with 5s/12ga. The final goal of the third quarter was scored by Kevin Coholan from Greg Wright on a cross-crease pass. The score was 12-4 in favor of Irondequoit.
Fairport scored the only goal in the fourth quarter at 10:18. Eric Martin (assisted by Mike Danylyshyn) scored during man-up with a rocket stick-side shot just below the stick. Goalie Zach Nash was screened from the shot and didn't see it coming. Nash finished the game with 4s/5ga (44%).
Senior Nick Kane was 12/17 (71%) at the face-off. In terms of shooting Irondequoit was 22s/17on/12g while Fairport was 24s/9on/5g.
Scoring for Irondequoit were Hart (2g-4a), Drew Coholan (4g-1a), Wright (1g-2a), Tim Kleehammer (2g), Kane (1g-1a), Kevin Coholan (1g-1a) and Walsh (1g). Irondequoit finished up the season 14-2.
Scoring for Fairport were Eric Martin (2g), Danylyshyn (2a), Shawn Runyon (1g), Tom Rynn (1g), Aaron Jones (1g) and Brendan McCarthy (1a). The Red Raiders are now 8-7 with one game remaining on Saturday.
Pal-Mac took a 3-0 first quarter lead and increased it to 5-3 at the half on their way to a 12-7 win over FL-2 opponent and host Mynderse.
"We talked all season about playing better in the 2nd half," Coach Enzo Falso said after the game. "We have had many halftime leads and let them slip away but today against Mynderse our offense finally came to life in the 3rd quarter." The Red Raiders had eight different players make the scorebook and the defensive unit of Eddie Anderson, Andrew Moak, Ryan Bills, and Andrew Hems figured heavily in the win. Jon Reeves made a number of dramatic stops on his way to a 14 save day for Pal-Mac.Dan Evans won 14 of 21 faceoffs for the Red Raiders.

Scoring for Mynderse were AJ Baehman (1g), Anthony Clark (2g), Dustin Luckinbill (1g), Josh Kurdziolek (1g), Kevin McCulley (1g-1a), Pat Churchill (1a) and Jesse Janas (1a). Tony Pallidino and Ben La Valley each had 6 saves for the Blue Devils. No report from Mynderse.
