A Great First Day of Lacrosse

March 24, 2007 - Although cold and rainy throughout the day, and in spite of thunder and lightning delays, there was some great lacrosse played on the opening day of the 2007 season. In a premiere match at Paetec Park, it was not until the 4th overtime period that Webster Schroeder took the sudden victory win against Fairport. Earlier in the day, Canandaigua was the winner over Webster Thomas, 15-9 and Irondequoit, under new Head Coach Craig Whipple, won a 12-1 victory over Penfield, the defending Class A Champions.
  
Athletic Directors from around the section arranged for all of the games to be played on artificial turf today, to save grass fields, and to help insure that games schedules were maintained. At Aquinas, it was "GRALL Day", featuring three GRALL teams in games and Aquinas playing a scrimmage. It was Mynderse winning in overtime over Haverling in the early game, Livonia over Newark, 14-5 in the middle game and McQuaid Jesuit broke a tie after three quarters to beat St. Francis (Buffalo) 7-5.
  
Rush-Henrietta won their opener against Pittsford, 15-5 at St. John Fisher's stadium this morning. At Irondequoit, it was Spencerport over Greece Arcadia/Olympia 9-8. At McAvoy Park, Brockport was the 11-3 victor over Greece Athena/Odyssey and Churchville-Chili was a 20-0 winner over Batavia, playing their first ever Varsity game.
  
Penn Yan was a 12-1 winner at home against Williamsville North (Buffalo).

In the last game of the night, Eastridge beat Hilton in the second overtime period for the 11-10 win at Irondequoit HIgh School.
  
  In a game that would normally be played toward the end of the season rather than the first, Webster Schroeder junior attackman, Mike Tota scored the winning goal with just 0:04 left in the fourth overtime period after receiving the ball from junior middie Nick Mooney.
  
On the first face-off of the game, long stick defenseman Drew Palmer, playing on the wing, controlled the ground ball and assisted Tota on the first Schroeder goal of the game, just 0:12 in. The Warrior bench and fans exploded with enthusiasm for the notable start of the season. Tota scored again, with an assist from senior attackman, Grant Catalino in fast break formation. Then Fairport responded with a goal by junior midfielder John McDonnell (assisted by senior attackman Mike Danylyshyn) at 9:46. The Red Raiders tied the game with a man up unassisted goal by senior Tom Rynn. Rynn, after standing on the sidelines last season with a knee injury, scored 4g-1a on 19 shots. Catalino scored the first of five unassisted goals with 5:10 remaining in the quarter. Rynn scored the tying goal, again in man up, after receiving a pass from Danylyshyn. The first quarter ended 3-3.
  
Schroeder took control in the second quarter scoring three unanswered goals (two by Catalino and one from Mike Barilla). Fairport ended the half with a goal by senior midfielder Shawn Runyon assisted by senior middie Eric Martin.
  
Fairport closed the gap after the halftime break with a goal by Danylyshyn which took them to within one goal. Schroeder scored the next two goals in less than a minute as Catalino and Austin Orsini each produced unassisted goals and gave the Warriors a 8-5 lead. Fairport returned with two goals in less than one minute as Danylyshyn scored at 6:17 and was followed by Rynn with an assist from freshman attackman Brendan Saylor to bring the scored back to 8-7, ending the third quarter.
  
Danylyshyn tied the games with an assist by Rynn at 10:45 and then took the lead of the first and only time with a goal by Runyon assisted by Martin a minute later. Taking control once again, Schroeder scored three unassisted goals (Mooney, Catalino and Orsini) to regain a two goal advantage. Thirty seconds later Fairport pulled within one with a man up goal by Rynn (assisted by Runyon). From the next face-off, Tota scored for Webster (assisted by Barilla) giving them a two goal lead once again, with 2:00 left in regulation.
  
Danylyshyn, who led all scorers in the game (with seven points) scored his last goal of the game with 1:47 left and then assisted the tying goal scored by Runyon with 0:41 remaining. The teams were tied at twelve goals after four quarters.
 
In the next four overtime periods, with excitement high and the maximum number of time outs taken, Fairport saw 12 opportunities to score while Schroeder saw two. With 3:08 left in the second overtime period, lightning was seen in the area, causing a forty minute delay. On the return, another 11:04 were played before Tota ended the game.
  
Catalino took 13 shots in the game and hit the cage six times, scoring on five.
  
Scoring for Schroeder were Catalino (5g-1a), Tota (4g), Orsini (2g), Barilla (1g-1a), Mooney (1g-1a), and Palmer (1a). Senior goalie, Zach Marshall, recorded 18s/12ga (60%).
  
Scoring for Fairport were Danylyshyn (4g-3a), Rynn (4g-1a), Shawn Runyon (3g-1a), Martin (2a), John McDonnell (1g) and Brendan Saylor (1a). Senior Matt Hurley was in the cage for Fairport, recording 7s/13ga (35%).
  
 At St. John Fisher it was Rush-Henrietta, the 15-8 winner over Pittsford in the opening game for each of these Monroe County-1 division teams.
  
Rush took a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and continued to into the halftime break, up a 7-4. In the third quarter the Royal Comets outscored the Panthers 6-1 ending the quarter up 13-5. In the last period Pittsford came back with three goals to two.
  
Scoring for Rush-Henrietta were senior attackmen Matt Moran (7g-3a) and Brian Hantzis (1g-1a), junior attackman Nate Delone (3g-2a), senior midfielder Justin Rose (2g), junior midfielder Colin Cornaire (2g) and senior goalie Matt McShea (1a).
  
Scoring for Pittsford were junior attackman Conor McDermott (4g-2a), senior attackman Doug Milano-Johnson (2g-1a), senior middie Chris Kist (1g-1a) and freshman attackman Jeff Milano-Johnson (1g). Score only from Rush-Henrietta. No report for Pittsford.
  
 Canandaigua opened their 2007 season with a dramatic win over Webster Thomas as they walked away with a 15-9 victory in the first of three games at Paetec Park. Although the lead shifted back an forth from 1-1 to 4-4, the Braves scored seven unanswered goals starting the the second quarter and continuing into the third.
  
The first quarter ended in a 3-3 tie with two goals for each team coming in man-up play. By the end of the game six of Canandaigua's goals and four of Thomas' came from their extra man offenses.
  
Canandaigua had eight different players make the scorebook and were lead by junior attackman, Connor Henderson who finished with four goals and four assists. He was involved in six of the first seven goals for Canandaigua.

Thomas had seven different players in the scorebook led by Brendan Rothfuss and Max Gurowski who each recorded 2g-2a. Rothfuss was in on three of the Titan's first four goals.
  
Both teams recorded 34 shots; 21 on cage for the Braves and 18 on for the Titans. Perhaps the greatest difference was found in the goalie stats. CA's goalies combined for 9s / 9ga (50%) whereas Thomas' goalies had 6s / 15ga (29%).
  
Both teams had strong face-off performances. Thomas' Pat Maloney was 16/27 (59%), and Canandaigua's Marshall Johnson was 11/18 (61%).
  
Scoring for the Braves in attack were seniors Jeremy Brown (3g-1a) and Tyler Wakefield (1g), juniors Connor Henderson (4g-4a) and Justin Tomzak (1a) and sophomore Brian Scheetz (1g-2a). Scoring in the midfielder were seniors Charlie Sauter (3g) and A.J. Groot (1g-2a) and sophomore Marshall Johnson (2g). Junior goalie Scott Bement recorded 9s/7ga and senior goalie Kyle Carson had 2ga.
  
Scoring for the Titans were senior attackmen Brendon Rothfuss (2g-2a) and Dom Scalzo (3g).junior attackmen Max Gurowski (2g-2a) and sophomore attackman Nick Scalzo (1g-1a). Sophomore middie William Gurowski and senior middie Dan Hinderland each added 1a for the Titans while junior defenseman Jake Ziegler scored 1g. Senior goalie Alex Mosher had 3s/11ga while sophomore goalie James O'Neil added 3s/4ga for Thomas.
  
 After 1-1 tied at halftime, defending Class C champions, Penn Yan broke open the game, outscoring Williamsville North (Section 6) with 11 unanswered goals to take the win 12-1 at home.
  
Freshman attackman Adam Trombley was a scoring leader with 1g-3a as was sophomore attackman Cole Castle with 4g. Senior attackman Ryan Cook added 1g-1a while senior midfielders Dan Wolfe (2g) and Brandon Trombley (1g) showed the way for
sophomore middies Brendan Minor (1g) and John Linnan (1a), Senior defenseman Mike Manley scored 1g-1a for the Mustangs in their first game of the season,
  
Sophomore face off man, Ty Trombley won 11 of 13 face offs for Penn Yan while senior goalie, RJ Wickham recorded 8 saves.
       
 It took two overtime period to decide that Mynderse was the winner 12-11 over Haverling-Haverling in a game played at Aquinas. Haverling led 11-7 with 8:08 left in the game. After Mynderse scored three goals, senior midfielder, Kevin McCully tied the game with 3:40 remain and sent the match into overtime.At 2:38 of the second overtime sophomore attackman, Charlie Barbay scored the game game winner with an assist from McCully.
  
Scoring for Mynderse were in the attack, junior Dustin Luckinbill (2g), sophomores Charlie Barbay (4g) and AJ Bachman (1a) and senior Anthony Clark (3g). Freshmen midfield Jesse Janas (1a) and senior middies Tim Sweeting (1g), Josh Kurdziolek (1g), Kevin McCully (1g-4a) finished the scoring. Senior goalie Ben LaValley posted 14s/11ga (56%).
  
Haverling was led by middies Mckenzie Durham (4g-2a), Mike Joint (1g-1a), and Kevin Derosier (2a). The attackmen for Haverling were Nic Venuti (2g-2a),Dave Harris (3g) and John Pruyn (1g). Sophomore goalie Chris Wolfer had an outstanding day with 17s/12g (59%).
     
 Kevin Mahler scored his second goal of the night for the win in double overtime Eastridgedefeated Hilton 11-10.
  
Scoring for the Lancers were Brandon Moynihan (3g-3a), Matt Driffill (4g), Kevin Mahler (2g-1a), Alex Austin (1g-1a), and Todd Horne (1g-1a). Adam Sisson helped Eastridge with faceoffsand senior goalie, Eugene Ferrerarecorded 21s/10ga. Hilton's top scorer was junior attackman, Jon Graus with (3g).Score only from Hilton.
     
 Despite overcast and rainy skies, Churchville-Chili won their season opener against the first year varsity team from Batavia, 20-0.
  
Midfielders Doug Hemink and Keith Preston combined to win 21 of 24 faceoffs. The Saints won the ground ball contest 53 to 10. Ground Ball leaders were Keith Preston (11gbs) and Brian Briggs (7gbs). The Saints Close Defenders (Brian Briggs, Mitch Mertel, Sean Pierce, Chris Vitale, Matt Vargo and Ben Swan) were noteworthy, forcing 16 of 20 failed clears and holding Batavia's EMO scoreless in four tries.
  
Scoring for C-C were Ryan Grogan (3g-7a) and Gino Marcello (5g) while 13 Saints players tallied points in this contest. Rounding out the scoring were Ben Rossignolo (2g- 2a), Jaime Englert and Keith Preston (1g-2a) each, David Terrell (2g), Brian Traugott (1g-1a), Doug Hemink, Jeff Langschwager, Cody Rumsey, Jon Hemink and Damien Pagano (1g) each. Danny Lupiani rounded out the scoring with 1a.Goalie, Sean Kettles made 2 saves. No report from Batavia.
      
 Despite the weather and a lightning delay, Spencerport defeated Greece Arcadia/Olympia 9-8 in a game played at Irondequoit.

Scoring for the Rangers were Jeff Konko (2g-2a), Luciano Petrella (1g-2a), Pat Deck (1g-2a), Phil Schmid (3g), Matt Darrow (2a), Justin Putt (1g) and Steve Basil (1a).Goalie Mike Palvino recorded 18s/8ga (69%). No report from Arcadia/Olympia.
       
 Brockportopened with a goal by senior attackman Adam Nauerth (4g) just over 2 minutes in to the game. The Blue Devils took a 5-3 halftime lead and finished with a 11-3 win over Greece Athena/Odyssey. Junior attackman Justin Klymochko led the Blue Devils in scoring with 5g-2a, picked up 8 ground balls as well. Also scoring for Brockport were sophomores Matt Lester (1g-1a) and Kacie Jones (1g). Junior goalie Connor Mykins recorded 14s/3ga (82%) and senior defensive-midfielder Tucker English had 14 ground balls.
  
Scoring for the Thunder were senior attackmen Jared Bennett (2g) and Jeremy Fitzgerald (1g-1a). Dave Tarana played had 14s/11ga (56%). Senior face-off men James Andon and Nick Ryan won a combined 13 of 18. Junior defenseman, Joe Prestigiacomo was a ground ball leader with ten.
        
 Livonia defeated Newark by a score of 14-5 Saturday afternoon at Aquinas. Junior attackman Tyler Russell scored the first four goals of the game, on his way to a 5 goal performance.

The Bulldogs put together a 5 goal second quarter. Russell scored his third and fourth goals to start the rally and senior attackman Brian Sciera (Cortland) added two assists during the quarter, while senior middie Oren Taylor (Pace) and Freshman attackman Jeff Wester both had goals and assists. Newark midfielder John Barrett scored a goal and assist to bring the Reds back. Special teams were a big part of Livonia’s success. Livonia’s extra man team of Russell, Sciera, Taylor, Wester, Chris Bausch and Matt Girolmo scored on 4 of 6 tries. The man down unit held Newark scoreless in six tries. Coach Sciera said after the game, “One of the keys to our success today was our unselfishness play. 10 of our 14 goals were assisted, and our special teams, man up and man down played very well.”
  
The bulldogs added 7 more goals in the second half.
  
Freshman attackmen, Jeff Wester and Chris Bausch along with sophomore midfielder Matt Girolmo helped the offense with 4 goals and 4 assists. Sophomore, Justin Becker started in goal for the bulldogs.
  
Scoring for Livonia were Tyler Russell (5g), Oren Taylor(3g-3a), Jeff Wester (2g-2a), Brian Sciera (2a), Matt Girolmo (1g-1a), Chris Bausch (1g-1a), Terry Mathews (1g) and Shane Ward (1a). Goalie, Justin Becker had 6s/5ga (54%).
  
Scoring for Newark were Stephen Johnson (2g), Chris Gonzalez (1g), John Barrett (1g-2a) and Adam Golding (1g-2a). Josh Putman recorded 12s/14ga (46%).
    
 Irondequoit opened their season with a big win against the defending Class A Sectional Champions from Penfield. The Eagles controlled the entire game allowing only one goal, late in the third quarter, on their way to a 12-1 victory.
  
Irondequoit saw offense from seven different players and scored the first 11 goals of the game. Leading the pack were sophomore attackman, Drew Colohan with 3g-1a and junior attackman, Greg Wright with 4a.
  
Penfield's Kyle Vanthof scored the Patriots' lone goal with 0:40 remaining in the third quarter. During the ensuing face-off, the Eagles gained control of the ball and scored their twelfth and final goal with 0:30 remaining the in the third. The Eagles continued to control the pace throughout the last 12 minutes although neither team scored.
  
The Patriots were missing junior attackman, Connor Rice who was sidelined with a shoulder injury.
 
Both teams took about the same number of shots. While Penfield took 23 shots, with 8 on the cage, Irondequoit took 26 shots, with 21 on the cage. Irondequoit won the face off game with a 2-1 advantage (11/17) although three of the Penfield wins came as the result of technical penalties. Senior face off man, Nick Kane represented the Eagles in all but one faceoff and won 63%.
  
Scoring for the Eagles were Wright (4a), Kane (2g), Drew Colohan (3g-1a), senior midfielders Todd Laemlein (2g), Kevin Colohan (1g), and Dan Utz (1g). Also scoring were junior attackman Tim Kleehammer (2g) and senior attackman Andrew Hart (1g-1a). Irondequoit's Zach Nash played the entire game and amassed seven saves and only one goal against (88%).
  
Scoring for the Patriots was Vanthof (1g). In the cage, sophomore Brady Del Pozzo made 9s/11ga and junior Kyle Semrau recorded 1ga.
  
It was the first game for new Head Coach and Irondequoit alumnus, Craig Whipple who next week will face his brother, Andrew Whipple, when the Eagles play Pittsford.
  
 McQuaid Jesuit was the winner in their opening game, against St. Francis of Buffalo (Section 6) with a score of 7-5. The game was close throughout with numerous lead changes.
  
McQuaid Jesuit scored first, just 14 seconds into the game as junior attackman Mitch Ritchie scored and unassisted goal. St. Francis returned with thenext two goals to take a 2-1 lead. McQuaid Jesuit scored two morebefore St. Francistied the game at 3-3 to end the first quarter.
  
The second quarter was interrupted by a brief lightning delay and was scoreless until 0:53 remained in the half. Senior middie, Evan Gallina scored to give the Knights a 4-3 lead going into the halftime break.
  
By the end of the third St. Francis had retied the gameat 5-5.
  
Late in the fourth quarter Ritchie scored his third of the night top give McQuaid Jesuit another lead. Junior attackman, Jeff MacDonald scored the final goal with 3:02 remaining to insure the win for McQuaid Jesuit.
  
Junior goalie Dan Caufieldwas accredited with 12 saves for a 71% game.
  
Scoring for the Knights were Ritchie (3g-1a), Gallina (2g), MacDonald (1g), Dan Sturnick (1g) and Nick Caton (1a).
