Thursday: Penn Yan over Fairport
April 20, 2006 - There were six games played on Thursday during vacation week. Defense was the name of the game at Penn Yan where the Mustangs scored the game winner in the last minute of the game. Canandaigua won by a goal at Irondequoit and Geneva scored three goals in last quarter to beat McQuaid Jesuit.
Junior midfielder Steven Carlson scored three goals including one with just 0:45 in the game to give Penn Yan the 6-5 win over visiting Fairport in this great game that featured incredible defense and dramatic goals by both teams.
Fairport was in control of the score in the the first quarter, producing two goals while holding the Mustangs scoreless. Senior attackman Dan Scarazzo scored the first on a pass from Pat Reilly at 10:38 and Ryan Lowe scored the second (unassisted) at 7:40. The Red Raiders were in the lead 2-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Mustangs reversed the offensive control in the second quarter and scored three goals while holding the Red Raiders scoreless. Dan Mesler was first to score on a drive and dodge from front right for the unassisted goal at 4:10. Carlson scored his unassisted goal on the same drive from front right (at 3:26). With the scored tied at two and time nearly finished, the Mustangs were man down when they managed to force a turn over. Ben Odell scored (unassisted) on a drive from the top of the box to get the go-ahead goal with 0:04 in the half and take the Mustangs into halftime with a 3-2 lead.
Like the Schroeder-Penn Yan game last week, the game was a lesson in the power of defense as both Fairport and Penn Yan defensive units limited shooting opportunities and each goalie made big "high pressure" saves when needed. The tied scored remained until the last minute of the third quarter. Fairport's Mike Danylyshyn scored a man up goal with an assist from Shawn Runyon at 0:54. The Red Raider lead didn't last long as Mike Manley won the faceoff and ran down field making an incredibly hard side arm shot with his defensive stick and scoring with 0:48 left in the quarter. At the end of the third quarter Penn Yan was up 4-3.
Momentum was an interesting factor in the game as the excitement of a score by one team would encourage the opponent to step it up. Fairport's Jeffrey Sanna made a beautiful feed to the crease where Pat Reilly was ready to catch and score at 10:55, but 0:22 seconds later, Steven Carlson forced a turnover, scooped up the ball and ran to the other end other field where he scored for Penn Yan.
Fairport tied the score again at the 4:49 mark when Dan Scarazzo passed the ball to Mike Danylyshyn on the crease for the goal. Ball control was carefully managed by both teams as they looked for opportunities that simply were not there as the defensive units made penetration difficult and the goalies made the saves.
With time running out, the Mustangs cleared the ball, but could not seem to get into the offensive set that Coach Hobart wanted. He called his last time out at 0:59 and gave very specific instructions to the offense. Carlson got the call and on a clear out drive from the front, placed a bounce shot past Fairport goalie Geoff Mayor. Mike Manley controlled the ball on the ensuing face off and the Mustangs took the win.
