Saturday: Intersectional Contests
April 24, 2005 - Four games were played with teams from other sections and the Section Five teams went 1-3 on Saturday. Victor was the winner over Sweet Home, while Canandaigua, Penn Yan and Geneva lost. In other contests, Waterloo and Pittsford were winners.
Canandaigua saw the end of their undefeated run with a 13-8 loss to visiting Baldwinsville of Section 3. According to the morning papers and Syracuse.com, the Bees led 1-0 after the first quarter and 4-2 at the half. Canandaigua took the third quarter 3-2, but Baldwinsville took the final quarter 7-3. The Bees, who used nine different players in their win were led by Greg Gibbons (2g-2a), John Venditti (2g-2a) and Bobby Conklin (2g-1a). Goalie Ryan Doyle made 16 saves for B-Ville (6-4).
Senior attackman Kyle Wakefield led the Canandaigua effort with 3g. Senior midfielder Dan Groot scored 2g-2a and senior attackman Chris Mulheron added 1g-2a. Tyler Emery and Aaron Manzer each scored a goal while Nick Boyan and Brian Hadsell each added an assist for CA. Junior goalie Dan Serafine ended the game with 11 saves for the Braves (7-1). No report from Canandaigua.
Victor was the 13-6 winner in their game against Sweet Home of Section Six. After a 2-2 first quarter the Blue Devils exploded in the the second and third with five goals each while holding the Panthers to a single goal.
Senior attackmen Cory Benulis (3g-2a) and Mike O'Hare (3g-2a) led the offense. Sophomore attackman Jason Houtenbrink scored 2g-2a, senior middie Kyle Sullivan scored 1g-2a and junior middie Erick Rogemoser scored 2g while Jon Hankin and Eric Willman each scored one goal for Victor. Senior goalie Matt Schmelzlen had 11 saves for the Blue Devils (6-4).
Sweet Home's goals came from midfielder Tom Draginski (3g)and attackmen Josh Brant (2g) and Matt DiGiacomo(1g-1a). Panther goalie John McMahn made 12 saves for Sweet Home (1-6).
A goal in the last quarter led to the demise of Penn Yan as they lost to Ithaca for Section Four, 8-7. Junior middies Steven Carlson (3g) and Dan Mesler (2g) led the Mustang effort while senior attackman Jon Van Houten added 3a. Junior attackman Dan McGuffie and sophomore attackman Brandon Trombley each added a goal and junior attackman Ben Odell added an assist for Penn Yan. Sophomore goalie RJ Wickham recorded 13 saves for the Mustangs (5-4). Ithaca, whose only loss came at the hands of Irondequoit last Wednesday, improves to 7-1.
ALthough a goal with 0:16 left in the game took host Geneva to within one goal, they ran out out of time and lost to Marcellus of Section Three, 13-12. According to the Finger Lakes Times, Geneva won the faceoff and put a shot on goal, which was stopped by Marcellus goalie Mark Girusso.
Senior attackman Mike Toner scored 5g-3a and sophomore attackman Greg Bonney added 5g-1a while senior attackman Chris Toner scored 2g-2a and senior middie Matt Warner recorded 3a for the Panthers (4-4). No report from Geneva.
Pittsford was the winner 15-2 over host Aquinas as senior attackmen Justin Rand (3g-1a) and Jake Boyce (1g-4a) led the way. Senior midfielders Dylan Bittlingmaier and Justin Nadler and junior midfielder Greg Gans each added two goals. Nadler and Gans combined to win all but three face offs for Pittsford (3-4).
Junior attackman Dave Schmandt had 1g-1a for Aquinas (7-4). No report from Aquinas.
A strong second half helped host Waterloo to take a 8-5 win over McQuaid Jesuit on Saturday morning. McQuaid Jesuit led at the end of the first quarter (2-1) and at the end of the half (3-2). At the end pf the third the Indians were up by one (5-4) and extended their lead to 6-5 with 7:36 remaining in the game before scoring two more at the end of the game.
Senior midfielder Jason Johnson led the offense with 2g-2a. T.J. Radka added 2g-1a and Gordy Lahr scored twice for Waterloo. Sophomore middie Josh Mateo added 1-1, Winston Boyd added an assist and senior goalie DeBolt finished with 11 saves for the Indians (7-4).
Junior attackman Marty Farchione scored 2g and senior midfielder Scott Rubino scored 1g-1a while junior defenseman Alex Caton and junior attackman Mark Hanna each added a goal for the Knights. Junior goalie Pat Maguire stopped 10 shots for McQuaid Jesuit (3-6).
