Thursday: Some Big Wins

April 21, 2005 - It was all it was cracked up to be. Two good teams fighting it out, each needing a win, but with only team able to come out on top. Today it was Penn Yan over host Fairport 10-8 an a game that went right down to the wire.
  
Penn Yan scored the first goal, at 9:53 when senior attackman John Van Houten drove from the front of the goal and scored the first of his 7 goals in the game. Fairport came right back, less than a minute later with a goal by senior midfielder Chris Lindner on an assist from junior attackman Peter Burkhardtt. Fairport scored again at 5:16 when junior attackman Pat Reilly scored on an assist by sophomore attackman Mike Danylyshyn. Junior middie Jeff Sanna scored the last goal of the quarter for Fairport with no time left on the clock. The Raiders led 3-1.
  
Penn Yan took the break to refocus and came back strong the the second quarter, shutting down the Raider offense while scoring five goals at their end. Junior attackman Dan McGuffie scored the first goal in man up with a feed from junior attackman Ben Odell. The ball bounced off two pipes before landing in the goal. Thirty-nine seconds later Van Houten received a cross goal feed from Dan Mesler. Forty-eight seconds later he scored again on a shot from outside. Fairport, who received 11 penalties in the game went two men down at 7:40 and Van Houten scored in man up at 7:12 with an assist from junior middie Steven Carlson. At this point the Mustangs had scored four goals in 2:25. With 0:07 left in the half, Van Houten scored an unassisted goal and the half ended with Penn Yan up 6-3.
  
After the halftime break, sophomore defenseman Michael Manley, playing long stick on the face off wing, picked up the ground ball and ran straight to the goal to score what would be the Mustang's only goal of the quarter at 11:46. Fairport started back with two goals; the first at 10:20 when Lindner scored with a hard side arm shot from the front and the second by Reilly with an assist by senior middie Erik Braun at 9:14. The quarter ended with the Mustangs up 7-5 and Fairport looking to get back in the game.
  
Four more penalties hurt the Raiders in the last quarter. Van Houten scored two goals in man up (both unassisted). Fairport then came back with three in a row, all by Lindner and all unassisted. His last goal, at 2:43 took the score to 9-8 Penn Yan. Both teams struggled for possession of the ball. Carlson scored an unassisted goal at 2:14 which would be the last goal of the game.
  
Sophomore goalie RJ Wickham recorded 11 saves for Penn Yan (5-3). Fairport's junior goalie Geoff Mayor made 5 saves and Zack Harris made 1 save for the Red Raiders (5-4).
  
 Schroeder hosted Hamburg of Section Six and was the winner 9-3 after taking a 1-0 lead in the first quarter and a 5-2 half time lead.
  
Strong defense from close defenders, Jeremy Appell, Matt Crandall, Mark
Liberti and Drew Palmer contributed numerous takeaways and were successful in shutting down the previously undefeated Hamburg offense. Defensive middies, Jason Cirulli, John Pawluk and Chris Nicodemi picked up 20 ground balls.
  
Senior attackman Tom Costanza finished the game with 4g-1a, sophomore attackman Grant Catalino finished with 2g-1a and senior attackman Jack Mooney, who was moved to attack for the game added 1g-2a. Senior midfielder Mike Catalino and junior attackman Chris Ferry each added a goal while senior middie Jason Cirulli added an assist for Schroeder. Junior goalie Dennis Costanza Dennis Costanza 11 saves for the Warriors who improve their record to 4-4.
  
 Webster Thomas jumped ahead 2-1 but Penfield came back to lead 4-2 at the end of the first quarter and was up 13-2 at the half.
  
Leading the effort for Penfield were senior attackman Trevor Rice (4g-5a), senior middie Mike Thon (4g), senior attackman Tim Pfeffer (2g-2a) and junior midfielder Kelly McKenna (3g). Also scoring for the Patriots were Jason Knerr (1g-1a), Mike Arvan (1g), Connor Rice (1g) and senior defenseman Luke Prattico (1a).
  
The Penfield face off contingent of Mike Thon, Jason Knerr, Mike Cummins and Connor Rice controlled all but 5 face offs. Senior long stick middie Evander Wilson led the Patriots ground balls effort with six. Penfield remains undefeated with seven wins.
  
The Titans saw three different players score. Freshman attackman Max Gurowski led the way with 1g-1a for Thomas (2-5). No Report from Thomas.
  
McQuaid Jesuit won 9-8 in the first overtime period in their exciting non league game against visiting Victor on Thursday afternoon.
  
The Knights scored first on a man up goal by junior attackman Mark Hanna with the feed from senior midfielder Scott Rubino at 10:59. Victor returned at 9:24 with the first of sophomore midfielder Jason Houtenbrink's three goals on an assist from senior middie Kyle Sullivan. Hanna scored again for McQuaid Jesuit, again in man up with an assist from sophomore middie Evan Gallina at 4:50. Ten seconds later, junior defenseman, Alex Caton, working from the face off wing, scored an unassisted goal for the Knights. Victor's senior attackman Cory Benulis scored the final goal of the quarter on a feed from junior middie Erik Rogemoser with 1:37 left. McQuaid Jesuit was up 3-2.
  
Victor owned the second quarter after McQuaid Jesuit scored it's only goal (Hanna unassisted at 10:59). Victor's freshman attackman Tom Rogemoser scored at 3:55 and again at 3:13 (assisted by Sullivan). Houtenbrink collected another goal, this time assisted by Sullivan at 0:35 and the half ended with the Blue Devils up 5-4.
  
Victor scored first in the third with an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Eric Willman at 11:00 and McQuaid Jesuit came back with a goal at 7:09 by senior middie Kevin Dacey, assisted by Gallina. The rest of the quarter was quiet, as the defense took control of the shooters. McQuaid Jesuit's Caton had a number of dramatic take aways, but his offense could not score until Dacey scored on a feed from Rubino with 0:30 left in the quarter. The teams were tied at six at the of the third quarter.
  
In the last quarter Willman put Victor ahead at 10:40 on his unassisted goal, but Dacey tied the game again at 8:33 when he picked up a ground ball near the crease and scored an unassisted goal. Rubino put the Knights ahead at 4:52 with an assist from his brother Tyler. At 3:25 Victor's Houtenbrink scored (assisted by Sullivan) to send the game into sudden victory.
  
Victor controlled the face off at the start of the first overtime period and took the ball down field where the Knight defense was looking into the sun. The defense forced a turnover and the ball moved to the McQuaid Jesuit end of the field. After a couple of missed shots and some key ground balls McQuaid Jesuit's junior attackman Marty Farchione scored the winning goal at 2:41.
  
"After a tough loss against Brighton earlier in the week, we needed this win. We showed great poise at the end of the game. I hope this game represents a turning point," said McQuaid Jesuit Head Coach Scott Bryson who was pleased with the victory.
  
McQuaid Jesuit improves to 3-5 while Victor drops to 5-4.
  
 Rush-Henrietta was the winner in a game with visiting Pal-Mac on Thursday afternoon. Senior attackman Sam Hillmon was the scoring leader for the Comets with 4g-1a, while sophomore Matt Moran added 3g-3a and Brian McShea scored 3g-1a for R-H (2-6). No report from Pal-Mac.
  
Pal-Mac senior goalie Ben Dlugosh had another noteworthy day in the goal. Senior midfielder Matt Walker and senior attackman Owen Campbell led the effort for Pal-Mac with 3g each and senior attackman Jamie Sinopoli added 2g for the Raiders who drop to 3-6.
  
 It was Waterloo over host Livonia 13-4 Thursday afternoon as ten different players hit the scorebook for the Indians.
  
Scoring for Waterloo were senior middie T.J. Radka (2g-2a), sophomore attackman Josh Mateo (3g-1a), senior attackman Jason Johnson (2g-1a) and senior middie Gordy Lahr (2-0). Junior midfielders Andy Riegel, Bill Jolly and Winston Boyd each added 1g-1a and senior attackman Matt Haws added a goal for Waterloo. Adding assists were senior midfielders Matt Kaiser (1a) and Dave Everett (2a). Senior goalie Pat DeBolt had 9 saves and senior goalie Matt Lilly had 3 saves for the Indians (6-4). Livonia's report was unavailable at this time due to technical difficulties.
  
 According to the morning paper, senior attackman James Ryan scored 4g-2a, and senior attackman Mike Ryerson added 3g-2a for Brighton in their 10-7 win over host Aquinas. Junior attackman Colin Davis added 3g for Brighton (7-1).
