Saturday: Beautiful Weather

April 9, 2005 - Mid 50 degree weather and bright sunshine dominated and the fans were winners today as 12 games were played by Section Five teams. Waterloo won another OT game in their 9-8 win over Waterloo. Newark played Midlakes to an 8-6 win and Aquinas won a close game with McQuaid Jesuit on their new turf field.
  
First year team, Midlakes took the first quarter lead 3-2, but Newark came back for the 8-6 win at home. Leading the scoring for the Reds were junior attackman Dan Mizro (2g-1a) and senior attackman Jason Johnson (1g-2a). Junior attackman Nate Johnson (2g) and midfielders Alex Quku and Luke Walton each added one goal for Newark (1-3).
  
Midlakes saw action from junior attackman Chris Ledgerwood (2g-2a), junior middie Nate Stevens (2g) and senior attackman Dominick Valerio (1g-1a). Also making the books were junior middie Jeff Bendicks (1g) and senior middie Jeremy Denisi (1a). No report from Midlakes.
  
Penn Yan won the first game of it's season with a home game Finger Lakes league win over Geneva, 14-6. Junior midfielders Dan Mesler (4g-4a) and Steven Carlson (4g-2a) led the way while senior attackman Jon Van Houten added 2g-4a and junior attackman Dan McGuffie scored 4g for Penn Yan. Sophomore goalie RJ Wickham made 17 saves for the Mustangs (1-2).
  
“Coach [Josh] Trombley and I challenged the kids to come out strong today,” Penn Yan head coach Brian Hobart said. “We were on our heels at 0-2. There’s a lot of pride in this program and we haven’t lost two games in a row in 11 years. We told the kids you’re not just going to go out there and win because you’re wearing a Penn Yan uniform. They really responded well today and I’m very pleased,” Coach Brian Hobart told the Finger Lakes Times (see story). No report from Geneva.
  
Schroeder played a relatively close game in the first half but was unable to maintain a successful defense against Irondequoit who won the home game contest 10-4 with a 7-3 edge in the second half.
  
The Eagles scored the first two goals of the game behind unassisted goals by junior attackman Derek Pino at 5:15 and sophomore middie Kevin Coholan at 3:00. The quarter ended with Irondequoit up 2-0 but with Schroeder defense doing well against significant ball time by Irondequoit. Junior goalie Dennis Costanza (19 saves) made a number of dramatic saves and the close defense of Appell, Nicodemi and Liberti controlled the excellent passing by the Eagle offense.
  
Irondequoit added to their lead at the 10:05 mark as senior midfielder Zack Pixley scored the first of his four goals (unassisted). The Warriors came back with goals by sophomore middie Mike Barilla at 6:58 and senior middie Mike Catalino (unassisted) at 2:55. The half ended with Irondequoit up 3-2.
  
A fired up Eagle offense dominated the third quarter, scoring four goals while holding Schroeder to one at 4:33 when senior middie Steve Hollis scored on an assist from sophomore attackman Grant Catalino. Irondequoit saw two more goals from Pixley (one assisted by Cory Bottiglier who also scored), and junior attackman Joe Parker (unassisted). The third quarter ended with the Eagles in control and up 7-3.
  
Irondequoit continued their scoring run with three more before the Warriors got another goal from Hollis (assisted by M Catalino) at 3:26. The Eagles scored two goals during a 3:00 stick penalty at the top of the last quarter. Irondequoit's goals came from Pixley, Bottiglier and junior middie Mickey Haight from senior defenseman Kyle Byron.
  
The Irondequoit long stick defensemen and defensive middies limited the Warrior shooting to 16 shots and forced numerous turnovers throughout the game. Seniors Kyle Byron, Dan Nielsen and Dave Wesolowski had noteworthy performances as senior goalie Dylan Crary recorded 8 saves.
  
It was a great game Saturday for both teams who played their hearts out. Final score was Livonia 9-8 over Waterloo in double overtime. Livonia took the early lead with a strong first half effort. The Bulldogs lead at the end of the first quarter 2-0 on goals by junior attackman John Dalberth (assisted by sophomore Brian Sciera on a fast break in the first minute of the game. Livonia extended it’s lead to 5-1 at the half on 3 goals by senior midfielder Shawn Wright and another by junior face off specialist Chad Britton.

The Indians came back in the 3rd quarter with scoring 6 goals. Waterloo's Josh Mateo and Winston Boyd each had 2g to help take a 7-5 lead. Livonia’s defense, lead by junior goal keeper Aaron Jamison stepped up. “We played great team defense for most of the game,” said Livonia coach John Sciera. “I’m very proud of the way our kids stepped up. We were very patient defensively.”
  
Close defenders Shane Moran, Andy Kurtz, Jeremy Allston, and defensive middies Luke Merritt and Jeremy Hudak did an outstanding job backing each other up in the 4th quarter and during the ensuing overtime periods.

The Bulldogs held Waterloo to just 1g in the 4th quarter and through both overtimes. Junior Midfielder Chad Britton led the charge with 2g-1a. Britton Scored the game tying goal for the second time the week (the first coming in another double overtime game on Tuesday against Haverling) with 1:58 in the 4th on an assist from Dalberth.
  
Waterloo held the ball for most of the first over time getting several good shot on Jamison. He totaled 21 saves for the game. In the second overtime Livonia gained more offensive control and managed several good shots that Waterloo goalie Pat DeBolt turned away. Finally on a lose ball on the crease sophomore middie Adam Schaible picked up a lose ball, dodged a defender and then scored for the Bulldogs.

Both teams leave the game with 3-1 records. Scoring for Livonia Britton 3g-1a, Wright 3g, Schaible 2g, Dalberth 1g-1a, Sciera 2a, and Josh Hendrickson 1a.

Scoring for Waterloo were Josh Mateo 3g, Winston Boyd 2g, Gordy Lahr 2a, Dave Everett, Matt Haws, and Steve Kwti with 1g each. Jason Johnson, Bill Jolly, and TJ Radka had assists. Senior goal keeper Pat DeBolt made 13 saves.
  
  Visiting Fairport took an 8-3 halftime lead and finished 13-6 over Rush-Henrietta in Monroe County league action. Sophomore attackman Mike Danylyshyn scored 4g-2a and junior attackman Pat Reilly added 3g-2a for the Red Raiders. Sophomore middie Tom Rynn scored 1g-3a and junior middie Ryan Lowe finished with 2g-1a. Senior midfielder Chris Lindner added 2g and junior middie Jeff Sanna added 1g for for Fairport (4-0). Junior goalie Geoff Mayor (3s) and junior goalie Zach Harris (5s) shared the goal tending assignmnet while Rynn and Sanna combined for 9 or 11 face offs for the Red Raiders.
  
Senior middie Tony Henriquez led the effort for R-H with 2g-1a while sophomore attackman Brian Hantzis and Matt Morin and senior attackman Brian McShea each added a goal and an assist. Senior middie Nick Garnier also added a goal as sophomore goalie Matt McShea made 18 Saves on 39 Shots for the Royal Comets (0-4).
  
Hilton was the winner over Gates Chili, 7-4 as junior attackman Tyler Stiles and freshman attackman Mitch Ritchie each scored 2g-1a and sophomore midfielder Brett Bridges added a goal for the Cadets. Strong defensive play by freshman Matt Davidson and senior Matt Faulks helped sophomore goalie Aaron Donahey make 15 saves in his first varsity start for Hilton (2-2).
  
Four different players scored for Gates including sophomore attackman Andy Hilton (1g-1a), senior attackman Dave Street (1g), junior middie Andy McEntee (1g) and junior attackman Pat Lynah (1g), Junior middie Tom Sudek added an assist and Chaz Giehl won 10 of 14 face offs for the first year Spartans (0-4).
  
Senior attackmen James Ryan (3g-4a) and Mike Ryerson (3g-1a) combined with junior attackman Colin Hickey (2g-2a) and Colin Davis (3g-1a) to give Brighton the win 17-6 over host Greece Thunder. Brighton also saw goals from Kyle Warren (1g-1a), Justin Hillery (1g-1a), Mykael Garcia (2g), Erik Lewish (1g) and Robbie Asselin (1g 1a). Sophomore Noah Berg (3s) and senior Mike Katz (2s) shared the goal tending duties for the Barons (3-1).
  
Senior attackman Joe Hallowell (3g) and junior attackman Dave Rodrigues (2g-1a) led the Thunder offense along with sophomore attackman Matt Machucki (1g-1a) and
senior midfielder Mike Kemp (2a). Newly promoted freshman defenseman Ryan Grimshaw played a noteworthy first varsity game, and senior goalie Orlando Villegas made 10 saves for Greece (1-4). No report from Brighton.

Spencerport boosted its record to 3-1 with a 7-4 win over the fellow first year team from Churchville-Chili after taking a 3-2 first quarter lead and watching a scoreless second quarter. After the half the teams each scored two goals in the third quarter before Spencerport scored two more in the last quarter. Junior attackmen Rob Stojanov (3g) and Andy Morgan (1g-2a) led the way the winners. Junior goalie Ryan Konko had an outstanding game with 12 saves for the Rangers.
  
Senior attackman Brad Gurbacki scored 2g for the Saints (2-2). No report from C-C.

Aquinas was the winner in the GRALL match up with McQuaid Jesuit as they beat the Knights in a closely fought 5-4 game at their new home turf field. The Little Irish scored two goals in the first quarter as junior midfielder Pat King scored (unassisted) and then assisted on the next goal by junior attackman Nick Vincent. Vincent scored again in the second quarter as McQuaid Jesuit's Mark Hanna scored the first goal of the game for the Knights (assisted by Marty Farchione). The half ended with Aquinas up 3-1.
  
McQuaid Jesuit came back in the third quarter to tie behind the efforts of senior midfielder Scott Rubino who scored two unassisted goals while the Knight defense kept Aquinas away from the goal. In the last quarter junior attackman David schmandt scored for the Irish and Vincent scored his third in man up. Rubino scored his third goal (unassisted) in the fourth, but the Knights ran out of time.

The Aquinas win was in great part due to the outstanding defensive play by senior Don Bringley, juniors Joe Edd and Ed Giorgi and freshman Alex Gray. The goal tending of senior Jason LaShomb who made 34 saves was instrumental in the victory for Aquinas (3-1). No report from McQuaid Jesuit.
  
Pal-Mac seemed to control the first half of the game, but Mynderse was the eventual winner after a monster second half effort that saw the Blue Devils outscore the Raiders 6-1. Leading the scoring for Mynderse were senior attackman Chris Warrick (4g 1a), and sophomore midfielder Kevin McCully (3g). Andy Zaverella, Sean McGrimley and Josh Kurdzilek each added a goal and senior middies Tim Ellis and Troy Gothem each had 2g for Mynderse. Junior goalie Nick Tiaskkun made 3 saves for the Blue Devils who improve to 3-3.
  
Pal Mac saw scores from senior attackmen Dave Bennett (2g-2a), Jamie Sinopoli (1g) and Owen Campbell (2a) and by senior midfielders Matt Walker (2g-1a), Adam Maier (1g) and Jeremy Reeves (1a). Senior goal tender Ben Dlugosh continued to prove he is one of the area's top goalies with 24 saves for the Raiders (1-3). No report from Mynderse.
  
HF-L was the winner against Eastridge 17-2 as senior midfielder David Uzialko scored 5g-5a, senior attackmen Mike Cintineo (5g-4a) and Jeff Price (4g-3a) scored the majority of goals for the Cougars, whose senior goalie Mike Brisbane made 17 saves. Junior middie scored 1g-1a for the Lancers. HF-L improves to 5-0 while Eastridge moves to 1-2. No reports from HF-L or Eastridge.
  
Canandaigua took an 8-1 halftime lead and finished 12-2 in their win over host Victor. Leading the scoring for the Braves were senior attackman Chris Mulheron with 7a, senior middie Dan Groot and senior attackman Kyle Wakefield who each scored 3g and by senior middie Nick Boylan who added 2g for Canandaigua (3-0). No reports from Canandaigua or Victor.
