Preseason 2005: Newark, Pal-Mac, Pittsford

-
NEWARK

Newark, under first year varsity coach, Bill Kirnie, was 0-8 in Finger Lakes-1 but finished the season at 4-12 overall.

Seeded 4th in the Class B Tournament, the Reds nearly beat Brighton who eventually took the B Championship. The quarter final game ended at 14-13.

Senior midfielder, Mike Wilkes was honored with first team placement on the Finger Lakes list.

Thirteen of 21 players in Newark graduated in 2004 including Wilkes, midfielder Hector Alejandro (FLCC), goalie Matt Gerhart (FLCC), defenseman Matt DePauw (FLCC) and attackman Nathan Colon.

The majority of players from the 2004 team are gone so Newark is very much in a rebuilding mode. Second year Coach Kirnie will center his team around four returning players including senior Kyle Burm and junior Alex Quku at midfield, junior Anthony Cole in the goal and senior Jason Johnson in the attack. Newcomers include juniors Nick Hamm (MD), Dan Mizro (Att) and Travis Skinner (Def)

PAL-MAC

Palmyra-Macedon was 0-4 in Finger Lakes-2 play and ended their first Varsity season at 2-15.

In the Class C Tournament, the Raiders were seeded 7th and lost in the first round to second seeded Waterloo.

Junior midfielder, Dave Bennett made 2nd team league honors for Pal-Mac.

Pal-Mac lost only Chris Crane (def/g) to graduation.

Pal-Mac will have a small team this season with only 18 players on the roster. Their first Varsity season was a tough one for the Raiders but they have experience now, and some very good athletes. Seniors Dave Bennett and Matt Walker return in the midfield and Matt Christ will anchor the attack. Senior goalie Ben Dlugosh who is capable of some dramatic saves will return to the goal and will be helped out from by senior defenseman Josh Polle. The Raiders have a full eighteen game schedule and should expect some difficulty with the best of the Finger Lakes, but there are plenty of games that could be well within their reach if they can stay healthy and focused.

2005 SEASON
Top Returning Players: Dave Bennett - Sr - Mid
Matt Christ - Sr - Att
Matt Walker - Sr - Mid
Ben Dlugosh - Sr - goalie
Josh Polle - Sr - Defense

Top New Players: Dave Merritt - Jr - Def
Derrick Piccola - Jr - Mid

Team Strengths: Most of the team returning from last year. This group of kids have been playing together since Junior High, so they know each other pretty well. Hopefully this can contribute to a successful season. The first 3-4 games will be crucial.

Team Weaknesses: With only 18 players on the roster, lack of depth in every position is a concern. Lack speed and transition game will have to improve.

Season Outlook: Lot of obstacles to over come, but this is a hard working dedicated team who is focused on improving. Expect to surprise some teams in the Finger Lakes, and our overall goal is to bring home a sectional win.

PITTSFORD

Pittsford finished third in Monroe County-1 with a 4-6 league record and 9-7 over all under first year Varsity Coach, Carmine Peluso.

The 4th seeded Panthers lost to Fairport 11-6 in the quarter finals of the Class A Tournament.

Senior midfielder, RJ Lamontagne was named to the All America Team and was joined on the Monore County-1 All League list by junior Jake Boyce (att) and Rob Mizelle (def). Coach Peluso was named Coach of the Year.

Pittsford lost eleven players to graduation including Lamontagne (Providence), defensemen Mizelle (RIT) and Matt Friedrich, midfielder Pat Kendricks (RIT) and goalie Ed Witter.

Pittsford lost nearly half the team to graduation and Coach Peluso has been replaced by first year Varsity Coach Andrew Whipple who was a standout attackman at Irondequoit and Maryland before assisting at Brockport. The loss of midfielders like All American, RJ Lamontagne and Pat Kendrick and defensemen like Mizelle will hurt.

The Panthers have senior Jake Boyce, who signed early with Binghamton, along with senior Justin Rand in the attack and Dylan Bittlingmaier will return to the midfield. JJ Postel will move from attack to the midfield this season and will return with junior Greg Gans. Steve Mathews is expected to guard the goal and the defense will be led by three year starter, Will Morse.

The Panthers lack depth this year but with a new and dynamic coach they will have numerous opportunities for exciting games and will beat teams that are unable to control Boyce and the Pittsford offense.
