Thursday: Brighton and Fairport Pull Upsets
May 20, 2004 - Brighton, seeded number 4th in Class B beat the top seed, Honeoye Falls, 15-11 in the semi finals, and Fairport (#5) beat Pittsford (#4), 11-6 in the Class A quarter finals and the rest of the seeds won out. Geneva (#3) looked like they would upset Waterloo (#2) as they led 8-1 when the game was halted for lightning with about nine minutes left in the game. That game will be finished on Friday (time and place TBD).
Canandaigua had no problem advancing past Rush-Henrietta as they won their home quarter final, 17-3. Mike Pane led the pack with 7g-2a while four others added two goals each. Chris Mulheron (2g-2a), Steve Smith (2g-2a), Bob Bush (2g-1a) and Aaron Manzer (2g) made the book and Dan Groot added 4a for the Braves. Tyler Emery scored 1g-1a, Nick Boylan scored 1g and Chad Buck added an assist. CA goalies, Dan Serafine and Matt McMahon combined for 11 saves.
R-H senior middies, Joe Moore (1g) and Joe Malach (1g-1a) each scored a goal and junior attackman, Brian McShea added the third goal for the Royal Comets.
Canandaigua will take on Fairport for a semi final game at Noon on Saturday at Victor High School.
Top seeded Penn Yan had a slow start as, in a rare occurrence, opponent, Livonia (#5) scored first in this Class C semi final game at Hobart and William Smith College.
Junior middie, Josh Hendrickson scored the first goal of the game at the 8:46 mark and for almost two minutes the Bulldogs held the lead until Penn Yan's senior middie, Brandan Hamm scored his unassisted goal. The Mustangs then took the lead for good at the 4:42 mark when Dan McGuffie scored on a feed from Jason Braman and Penn Yan never looked back as they took won the game 12-5.
Penn Yan took a 6-3 lead into half time and then scored another six in the second half, while holding Livonia to 2 goals.
Kyle Eakins (3g), Dan McGuffie (3g) and Brandan Hamm (2g) led the Mustangs, while Jason Braman and Dan Messler each added 1g-2a. John Van Houten and Steve Carlsen added 1-1 for the Mustangs.
Livonia saw scoring from Aaron Young (2g) while Pat Wahl and Josh Hendrickson each added 1g-1a. Cahill Walsh also scored a goal for the Bulldogs and Jake Auburn recorded 16s for Livonia (9-10).
"We did some really great things in the first half", noted Livonia coach
John Sciera. "We were patient on offense and we played some very good team defense." "This was the best team we've played against all year. Those kids from Penn Yan are so skilled, and know the game so well."
Penn Yan will meet the winner of Waterloo / Geneva which will be finished on Friday after being halted with Geneva up 8-1 with about nine minutes left in the last quarter.
Brighton took the lead in the first quarter (3-1) and increased their lead to 7-2 at the half-time break on their way to a 15-11 upset over top seeded, Honeoye Falls-Lima. Mike Ryerson scored 3g-5a and James Ryan added 4g-3a for the Barons. Rounding out the scoring for Brighton were Zach Davis (3g-1a), Colin Davis (2g), Spencer Durland (1g-1a) and Mykael Garcia (1g).
HFL saw scoring from Eric Dehm (2g-3a), Jeff Price (3g-1a), Mike Cintineo (2g-2a) and Dan Layfield (2g-1a). David Ushelko and Eric Holton each scored one goal and Jake Vogt added an assist for the Cougars (12-4).
Brighton (11-7) will face the winner of Aquinas / Victor for the Class B Championship.
Irondequoit advances to the semi finals with a 15-9 home game victory over Webster Schroeder as senior attackman, Jon Tmkey scored 4g-4a and Cory Bottiglier added 3g-2a for the Eagles (12-4). Jim Mikel, Craig Lepiane, Sean Doyle and Mickey Haight each scored twice for Irondequoit who will play Penfield in the semi finals on Saturday.
Jack Mooney scored 3g-1a for Schroeder who ends their season at 8-9.
Penfield won their quarter final game with a 18-7 home game victory over Webster Thomas as Tim Pfeffer scored 4g-2a and Ryan O’ Donnell added 4g and Trevor Rice added 3g-2a for the Patriots (16-1). Kelly McKenna (2g-1a), AJ Civalier (2g-1a) and Clay Rice (1g-1a)made the scorebook while Mike Thon and Dennis Bell added 1g each. Sophomore goalie, Brian Dell made 9s and senior goalie, Shawn Sullivan added 3s for Patriots.
Thomas had 2g-1a from Jeff Casper and 2g form Steve Hutton. The Titans finish their season at 11-7.
Fairport took a 9-3 half-time lead and ended their quarter final game with an 11-6 win over host Pittsford. Freshman, Tom Rynn scored 3g and sophomore middie, Ryan Lowe added 2g The Red Raiders. Senior attackman Pat Van Hall scored 1g-2a and sophomore attackman, Pat Reilly added 1g-1a for Fairport. Senior goalies, Sean Miller recorded 14 saves for Fairport (10-7) who will face top seeded, Canandaigua in the semi finals on Saturday (noon at Victor).
Senior middie, RJ Lamontagne scored 3g for Pittsford who ends their season at 9-7.
