Game Report: Sat - 03/28/2004

- The 2004 campaign began Saturday with the two games of the season. Penfield defeated Oswego of Section 3 (Syracuse) 11-7 behind the leading effort of junior, Mike Thon who scored 3 goals and an assist. Ryan O'Donnell, Tim Pfeffer and Mike Arvan each added 2g for the Patriots. Goalkeeper, Shawn Sullivan, recorded 18 saves for Penfield (1-0).

Penn Yan began it's news season with a new coach and produced a 10-8 win over Amherst (Section 6). Brian Hobart, who after 12 years as assistant, became the 4th Head Coach in the Mustang's 32 year history. Penn Yan took an early lead Saturday in the game played at Nazareth College in Pittsford and led at the end of the first quarter 4-1. At the end of the half the Mustangs led 7-4. Each team scored a single goal in the third and Amherst took the last quarter 3-2.

Both teams featured sharp passing for the early season. Although Penn Yan dominated in first half face offs, Amherst appeared to adjust at halftime and won the majority in the second half. Freshman goalie, R.J. Wickham made two dramatic saves in the first half and continued to show poise throughout the game. Scoring for the Mustangs came from John Van Houten (3g-1a), Brendan Hamm (2g-1) and Kyle Eakens (2g-1a).

Amherst, who won the Section 6 Class B Sectional Title last year ended their season with an 18-3 record after loosing to Jamesville-DeWitt (Section 3) in the NYS semifinals. With only 17 players in the game last night, the Tigers ran surprisingly hard up and down the artificial turf at Nazareth. All 8 goals came from the attack, led by sophomore Corey Rich (4g) and senior Mike Pizzuto (3g-1a).
