Tenth Seeded C-C Advances to Semi's

-  SPORTSFIVE REPORT:  Tenth seeded Churchville-Chili held off the late press by second seeded Webster Thomas to defeat the Titans 15-14.  Coming into the contest today, Thomas had previously defeated Churchville-Chili 20-15 in the second game of the season and had finished the regular season with a 13-3 record.  The Saints, on the other hand, finished the regular season at 5-11.  Earlier this week they defeated seventh seeded Ath/Ody.  After two rounds, there have only been three games were the lower seed has won and the Saints did it twice (fifth seeded Aquinas defeated fourth seeded Geneva last night in Class C).

Churchville-Chili at ThomasChurchville-Chili won the opening draw and ran straight down the field to get on the board only 0:08 into the game.  Jacob Buck assisted Patrick Sheridan for the goal.  Twelve seconds later, the Titans responded with their own face-off fast-break from CJ Battiaglia to Nick Mabe.  The first twenty seconds of the game was a good indication of how the entire contest went.  Both teams scored in streaks, but could not pull away.

Thomas took the early lead after scoring six of the first eight and leading 6-2 with 1:46 remaining in the first quarter.  Churchville-Chili scored two goals in the final forty-five seconds to bring the game back within two before the end of the first quarter.  With an unassisted goal by Buck to start the second quarter, the Saints pulled back to within one.  Thomas kept up the pressure and increased their lead to 9-6 with 4:36 remaining in the half.

Churchville-Chili responded with three goals to end the half and tie the game for only the second time (1-1).  Corey Yunker scored all three goals with the first two assisted by Buck.  Yunker’s final goal of the run was scored with 0:04 remaining in the half.  The Saints came out of halftime and scored the first goal with Buck scoring off a feed from Austin Orengo.  With Buck’s goal, the Saints took their first lead since the opening face-off goal. Although the Titans forced ties at 10-10 and 13-13, the Saints never relinquished the lead.  After the 13-13 tie (7:09 remaining in the fourth), Churchville-Chili scored back to back goals to go back up by two.  Orengo and Sheridan scored unassisted for the Saints.  Thomas pulled within one with another goal from Mabe with 1:22 remaining.  The Titans had the last chance at the goal after a broken clear in the final 30 seconds.  The Churchville-Chili defense stepped up and forced a turnover with 0:04 on the clock and were able to hold on for the win.
