Wayne Advances to the Finals for First Time in Program History 2018-05-25 - Sophomore John Reagan scored the game winning goal in the first overtime period to give second seeded Wayne the 11-10 win over third seeded HFL. The Cougars took over the game early scoring five of the first six goals to take a 5-1 lead early in the second quarter. Garrett Ruff scored two early goals for the Cougars to set the pace. He scored with a single dodge with 7:37 remaining and off a behind the back goal (assisted by Josh Barski) with 3:13 remaining. Junior Andrew Mapstone scored two of his own in the run.
Wayne responded with back to back goals to put the score at 5-3 HFL. Sophomore Zach Boyatzies scored the first and Freshman Andy Hamel scored the second. In the final four minutes of the first half, HFL answered with two of their own. Barski came up with a strong defensive take that also gave him an assist to Mapstone with 3:48 remaining. Shortly thereafter, Mapstone scored his fourth with another single player dodge. The final goal of the half was scored by Reagan as time counted down. HFL led 7-4 going into halftime.
In the second half, Wayne dominated. They scored four unanswered goals to go back on top for the first time sine 1-0. Reagan scored two with Boyatzies and Spencer Quinn scoring the other two. The lone HFL goal of the quarter was scored by senior defenseman Parker Hotchkiss off a feed from Garrett Ruff with 1:00 remaining on the clock. The score was tied 8-8 after three quarters.
The scoring continued to alternate through the fourth quarter. HFL’s Mapstone fed Barski early to give the Cougars the lead back. Wayne tied it up two minutes later with Boyatzies’ third. With time counting down HFL grabbed possession with a timeout at 4:10 remaining in regulation. Coming out of the timeout, HFL went back on top with Ruff assisting Roth with 3:15 remaining. Wayne forced another tie (the fifth of the game) with 0:44 remaining off another Boyatzies goal. HFL won the ensuing faceoff, but quickly turned it over. Wayne grabbed the loose ball and a timeout. They had one more attempt at the goal in regulation, but a late save forced overtime.
HFL had the first attempt at the cage; however, freshman goalie Jack Acker came up with a big overtime save to give the Screaming Eagles offense a chance. They cleared the ball upfield and Reagan scored to give Wayne the win. The second seeded Screaming Eagles move on the Finals for the first time in program history. |
