Thomas Heads Back to the Finals 2018-05-26 - Second seeded Webster Thomas came out and dominated in their 16-7 win over third seed McQuaid Jesuit. The Titans scored six unanswered in the first quarter and increased their lead to 11-2 at the end of the first half. In the second half, McQuaid Jesuit just couldn’t make up the difference. Thomas last made the Finals when they won the Class B Tournament in 2016.
Thomas scored the first six goals of the game (all in the first 12 minuites). Trevor Ford, who finished with 4g-1a, scored the first two goals. Both goals were unassisted with the first a drive down from the top and the second a drive from behind the cage. The third goal was a loose ball on the crease after a save by Jon Gaglio. Spencer Nuccitelli picked up the loose ball and finished into the back of the net. The Titans led 6-0 after 12 minutes. Coming into the second quarter, McQuaid Jesuit scored the first goal. Jack Billitier scored during extra-man offense off a feed from Maxfield Ettinghausen. Thomas responded with four more unanswered goals. Of note, the goal at 5:58 was scored during a slow break coming up the field with Jacob Allen coming in along the right goal line. The next goal, only 19 seconds later, was scored during a broken clear with Nuccitelli intercepting the pass and finishing into the back of the net. The second Knight goal was scored by Billitier (unassisted) with 1:08 remaining. Thomas led 11-2 at halftime.
The Knights won the third quarter 3-2. Neither team scored in the first seven minutes before Thomas scored with 4:24 remaining in the third. Colin Horan scored unassisted. McQuaid Jesuit scored back to back goals over the next two minutes. Ettinghausen scored off a feed from Ryan McEvily first and then James Markley scored off a feed from Will Harvey. Markley scored off a cross-crease feed from the midrange to the crease. Each team added one more goal before the end of quarter. Ford scored his fourth goal of the game for Thomas. For the Knights, Billitier scored his third. Thomas led 13-5 after three quarters.
In the final quarter, McQuaid Jesuit scored the first goal with an unassisted goal from Markley. Thomas responded with a three of their own. Nuccitelli scored his fourth and fifth over a three minute period. The first was assisted by Hill and the second was assisted by Allen. The latter was scored during a cross pass on a fast-break. With 6:01 remaining in the game, Thomas led 15-6. The third was an unassisted goal from Hill on a high outside shot from the top. The Knights topped off the game with Markley’s third goal. This time an outside shot off an assist from Ryan McEvily. Webster Thomas moves on to face top seeded Victor in the Finals on May 30th.
