Penn Yan Wins 22nd Title

- Penn Yan won their twenty-second Section Five Title (seventh consecutive) with a 13-6 win over Waterloo.  The Mustangs scored the first four goals and held the Indians scoreless for the entire first quarter.  Waterloo scored four of the last five goals to pull the score closer than the game played.  A key component to the Mustang victory was midfielder Connor Fingar at the face-off draw.  Fingar won nearly all the face-offs and was named Class D All Tournament MVP.

Pittsford winsThe first four Mustang goals were scored by four different players.  Fingar scored the opener with an outside shot that was assisted by Blumbergs.  Five minutes later, Ben Emerson scored his first goal with a feed from the top to the right-side goal line extended (assisted by Fingar).  Will Rogers scored the third with a feed from behind by Emerson.  The final first quarter goal was another feed from behind, this time Dylan Stape scored off a feed from Blumbergs.  The Mustangs led 4-0 after one quarter.  Emerson, Blumbergs and Stape were all added to the All Tournament team.

In the second quarter, Waterloo outscored the Mustangs 2-1.  The opening Indian goal was a fast-break cross-crease feed from Adam Jensen to Dillon McCann.  Jensen was named to the All Tournament team for Waterloo.  Blumbergs scored his first goal with a sweep along the top of the restraining line.  The final goal of the half was scored by Tyler Colton with a drive from behind.  Penn Yan led 5-2 at the half.

Penn Yan vs WaterlooDefensively, Waterloo goalie George Williams had a stellar game.  He finished with 14 saves and was named to the All Tournament team.  In addition, defenseman Derek Excell was also named to the All Tournament team.  Excell had a number of one-on-one takes and 2 interceptions for the Indians.  In the third quarter, Penn Yan picked up their scoring and put the game out of reach.  They added 6 more goals and held Waterloo scoreless for another quarter.  Blumbers (2), Fingars (3) and Emerson (1) scored for the Mustangs.  After three quarters, Penn Yan led 11-2.

In the fourth quarter, Waterloo outscored the Mustangs 4-2 with four of the last five goals.  Colton added another 2 to bring his game total to 3g.  Brandon Smith and Blumbergs rounded out the last two Mustang goals.  Penn Yan split goalies at the half with Jeff Kinyon playing the first half and recording 2 saves.  Kyle Welker finished out the game and recorded a single save.  Penn Yan defensemen Coty Bailey and Dakota Miller were also named to the All Tournament team. Ryan Finnegan (Gananda) and Brandon Clark (Haverling) were also named to the All Tournament Team.  A complete list of All Tournament winners can be found HERE.

Penn Yan moves on to the first round of States.  Their opponent will be determined after the Section VI Championships tomorrow.
