Penn Yan Wins NYS Championship

Penn Yan won their second ever NYS Championship this afternoon with an 11-8 win over Chenago Forks from Section IV. The Mustangs were led in scoring today by Teagan Fingar (7g-2a). Fingar was a part of 9 of the 11 Mustangs goals and was instrumental in bringing Penn Yan back from an early 3-0 deficit. Braden Fingar finished with 2g-2a and Tukker Fisher finished with 2g-1a. For Chenago Forks, Bauer Maus led with 4g-1a.

The game was a story of halves with Chenago Forks coming out strong in the first half and Penn Yan dominating the second half. The Blue Devils scored the first three goals of the game and held the Mustangs scoreless for over 18 minutes. Maus scored the first two goals of the game. The first was a shot from the right side with a feed from Polacek and the second was an unassisted goal when he picked up the loose ball on the crease and finished into the back of the net. In the cage for Penn Yan, senior Will Thompson finished with 15 saves (8 of which were in the first quarter). The Blue Devils led 2-0 going into the second quarter. In the second quarter, the Blue Devils also scored the first goal with Donavin Perhach driving from behind the cage and finding Maus open on the crease. The Mustangs got on the scoreboard with back to back goals, both by Fingar. The first was a single drive from the left side of the cage PY vs CFand the second was a midrange shot from the right side. The Mustangs had pulled within a single goal with 5:19 left on the clock. Chenago Forks responded with two more goals before the end of the quarter. John Figueroa assisted both goals, the first to Wyatt Stasik and the second to Joey OConnor. The Blue Devils led 5-2 going into halftime.

In the third quarter, Maus scored the opener with an unassisted goal. Penn Yan responded with a five goal stretch over less than five minutes to take the lead for the first time. T. Fingar scored three of the goals, while assisting the other two. PY vs CF Two of the goal were fast-break goals. After scoring the fifth goal and taking the 8-7 lead, the Blue Devils were forced to call a timeout to try and slow the game down. Chenago Forks scored once more before the end of the quarter to tie the game up again going into the fourth. Maus scored his fourth goal of the night with a feed from Perhach. The game was tied 7-7 going into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was dominated by the Mustangs as they won the quarter 4-1. Thirty six seconds into the quarter, Penn Yan took the lead for the last time with B. Fingar assisting T. Fingar with a midrange shot from the right flank. B. Fingar led added another goal of his own with a feed from T. Fisher. The lone Blue Devils goal of the quarter was scored by Figueroa with an assist from Stasik with a feed from behind the cage. The PY vs CFfinal two goals of the game were scored by T. Fingar and B. Fingar. The Mustangs held off the late pressure to win their second NYS Title.

The Mustangs last won the NYS Title prior to the creation of the Class D and were the Class C Champions in 2001. Since then, the Mustangs have made the Finals four other times (3 in Class C and 1 in Class D), but failed to bring the Title home.
