DAY IN REVIEW: SATURDAY - There were quarterfinal games played today in the NYSPHSAA Lacrosse Tournaments and Section V teams won each game.

MCQUAID JESUIT-13 vs ORCHARD PARK-6 - In the Class A game, held in Section VI at Williamsville East High School, Vincenzo Giangreco (1g-4a), scored just twelve second into the game on a feed from John Harding (3g-1a).  After goals by Will Engle (1g) and Harding, the Quakers scored their first goal, at 4:12 when senior midfielder Mike Pietrantoni ripped a long shot from front center. McQuaid scored four more goals in less than a minute and a half and led at the end of the quarter 7-1. The Knights saw more than an equal share as the result of faceoffs by JP Giaqnforti (1g) and Domenic Giangreco (1a) who both recorded 7+/4- (64%).

After Will DeMarco (2g-3g) scored on a pass from AJ Quagrello (3g-1a), Orchard Park scored their second goal on a drive from behind the cage by junior attackman Justin Relosky. The Quakers scored once more, with 22 seconds in the half as Logan Warn found Luke Danna on the wing and the half ended with the Knights up 8-3.

Dana scored again of OP at the top of the third on a feed from Owen Wright and a strong, outside sidearm shot taking the scored to 8-4, but shortly thereafter, McQuaid returned with three goals to end the quarter up 11-4. Both teams scored two goals in the last quarter. The knights now move on the NYS semifinals at SUNY Cortland on Wednesday where they will play Liverpool (Section III) at 4:00 PM. senior midfielder Liam Palmer (2g) also scored for McQuaid Jesuit (18-2). VICTOR-16 vs NIAGARA-WHEATFIELD-4 - Although the Falcons (11-7) scored the first goal in the game , the Blue Devils scored three before Niagara-Wheatfield scored again. The quarter saw Victor up 4-2 and then scored thirteen unanswered goals spanning the into the fourth quarter when they began running time. Victor will play Vestal (Section IV) at 5:30 on Wednesday. Senior midfielder Aiden Clinkscales (2g-2a) reached his 50th career goal and junior midfielder Mason Debottis (1g) scored his first Varsity goal in the game. Others scoring for Victor (17-3) were Jack Herendeen (4a), Christian Besaw (4g), Jackson Mead (4g), Brody Secker (3g-1a), Tanner Radogna (1g-1a), and Dante Pezzimenti (1a). Facing off for Victor was junior JT Ricci with 10+/2- = 83%, and 8th grade Eli Ricci with 8+/0- = 100%. In the goal for Victor was senior Parker Erwin with 3s/2ga = 60% (36 mins), and junior Landon Tantillo with 4s/0ga = 100% (7 mins). AQUINAS-18 vs CHENANGO VALLEY-6 - Aquinas whose seven seniors had graduation ceremonies in the morning, went right to work ending the first quarter up 6-1 and then added another six goals to lead at the half 12-3. Junior attackman Noah Olbrich (2g) reached his 150th career goal in the game. Others making the offensive book for Aquinas (16-5) include Tano Auriuso (5g-3a), Jake Guggino (4g),Dom Siesto (2a), Ethan Copeland (2g), Gio Valerie, and Carter Wegman (3g). In the goal for Aquinas was sophomore Jake Gibson with 7s/6ga = 54% (48 mins).Next up for Aquinas is the semifinal round at SUNY Cortland at 3:00 where they will play Marcellus (Section III). HFL-15 at JOHNSON CITY-4 - Nine different players scored goals for HFL including Quinn Kailbourne (1g-5a) reached his 50th career assist. The Cougars held the Wildcats scoreless in the first half while scoring fourteen of their own. The second half started in running time, but the Cougars scored only one more goal, while the Wildcats scored four. Others scoring for HFL (19-2) were Chase Perryman (2g-5a), Grady Goodberlet (4g-1a),Mathew Brassie (1g), Patrick Donahoe (1g), Owen Smith (3g), Marco Vengoechea (1g-1a), Alex Steinhoff (1a), and Madut Mathuc (1g). Facing off for HFL was Ben Cook with 2+/1- = 67%, and Carsen Montone with 13+/7- = 65% and in the goal freshman Jason Bennett recorded 4s/0ga = 100% (24 mins) including his 100th career save.HFL will take on Jamesville-DeWitt in the semifinal round at SUNY Cortland (6:30 PM). DAY IN REVIEW: WEDNESDAY - The two out-bracket games were played in Section VI at Williamsville East High School today and Section V won both the Class C (HFL) and Class D (Aquinas) games. The teams will now move to Maine Endwell High School on Saturday for the quarterfinal round of the NYSPHSAA tournaments.

HFL-12 at LAKE SHORE/SILVER CREEK-7 - Freshman attackman Grady Goodberlet scored eight goals to lead the Cougars to a 12-7 win over Lake Shore/Silver Creek. HFL started slowly, with two unanswered goals by Goodberlet from Quinn Kailbourne(4g-2a) and Kailbourne from Chase Perryman (5a). The Cougars scored three more at the top of the second, leading 5-0 and the then the Eagles saw unassisted goals from Broady Himelein (2g-2a) and Raymond Cortes II (2g) to enter the half with HFL up 5-2. The third quarter was the busiest with HFL scoring six and the Eagles scoring two.  The last quarter belonged Lake Shore who scored three and HFL scoing one. Drew Angelo, who won 14+/4- (81%) at the faceoff "X" also had two assists. Owen Smith and Mathews Brassie each added an assist for HFL.

Scoring for Lake Shore/Silver Creek (16-2) were Brody Himelein (2g-2a), Kolten Bonafede (2g), Keion Beaver (1g), and Raymond Cortes II (2g). Next up for HFL is a Saturday trip to the NYS quarterfinals at Maine Endwell High School (Section IV) where they will play Johnson City (5-12) at 6:00 PM.     [ BOX SCORE]

AQUINAS-13 at AKRON-10 - Aquinas took a 6-3 first quarter lead and traded three goals with the Tigers in the second quarter giving Aquinas a 9-6 lead at the half. The first quarter run was enough as both teams scored four goals in the second half. Scoring for Aquinas (15-5) were Noah Olbrich (3g-1a), Tano Auriuso (6g-2a), Jake Guggino (3g-2a), Dom Siesto (1a), and Carter Wegman (1g). Scoring for Lake Shore/Silver Creek (16-2) were Brody Himelein (2g-2a), Kolten Bonafede (2g), Keion Beaver (1g), and Raymond Cortes II (2g). McQuaid Jesuit scored the final four goals of the game spanning the entire second half to secure their first ever Section Five Title.  The Black Knights have been to the Finals three times in program history (including last year's 9-5 loss vs. Pittsford), but this was their first time taking home the Title.  The game was a defensive battle with McQuaid Jesuit winning 6-4 over Penfield.  Penfield sophomore goalie Mason Schembri and McQuaid Jesuit senior goalie Will Gordon were both named to the All-Tournament team.  Schembri finished with 10 saves and Gordon finished with 7 saves.  Offensively, Adam Schembri (2g-1a) led for the Patriots and John Harding (2a) led for the Knights.  Both were named to the All-Tournament team with Harding being named the Class A MVP.

The game started off with Penfield scoring back-to-back goals.  Schembri assisted the first goal with Christian Brown (1g-1a) scoring.  Three minutes later, he scored the goal with an outside shot that found the back of the net.  McQuaid Jesuit responded with two of their own to the tie the game at 2-2.  The first was scored by JP Gianforti and the second by Will DiMarco.  DiMarco scored his goal after scooping up the ball on the crease and finished into the back of the net.  The Patriots added one more goal before the end of the quarter.  Ethan Aust scored with a feed from Zach Shores.  The Patriots led 3-2 after twelve minutes.

In the second quarter, Penfield scored the only goal.  Schembri scored with an assist from Brown; Brown fed the ball into a tight crease and Schembri was able to score with an underhand shot.  Penfield extended their lead to 4-2 going into halftime.

The second half belonged to the Knights.  McQuaid Jesuit scored four unanswered goals to take their first lead of the game and secure the win.  Three of the four goals were scored in the third quarter.  All three goals were assisted and the culmination of multiple quick passes.  The first ended with AJ Quagrello assisting Will Engle.  Harding assisted the second and third goals with feeds to Ryan Woodard and Domenic Giangreco.  Giangreco, a sophomore, finished the game with 1g; however, he was demonstrative in getting the Knights the ball during the face-off draw.  McQuaid Jesuit led 5-4 after three quarters. The lone goal of the fourth quarter was scored with a drive along the top of the restraining line by Vincenzo Giangreco.  McQuaid Jesuit will move on to the NY State Tournament this weekend.

*+Victor defeated Irondequoit 9-6 tonight in the Class B Championship to win their tenth Title and second in a row.  The game was close for the first half, before the Blue Devils pulled ahead in the second half and held off a small push by Irondequoit in the middle of the fourth.  Senior attackman Jack Herendeen finished with 2g-2a and was named the All-Tournament MVP.  Much like the earlier game of the evening, this game was a defensive battle.  Both goalies, Irondequoit's Sven Habitzreuther and Victor's Parker Erwin were named to the All-Tournamanet team.  Both Habitzreuther and Erwin recorded 10 saves for their respective teams.  Offensively for the Eagles, Jonah Carrier finished with 3g to head his team; in addition to being named to the All-Tournament Team, it was also announced tonight that he was named the Section V Offensive Player of the Year.  

The first quarter saw a flurry of scoring with both teams putting three into the back of the cage.  Irondequoit scored the opener with Carrier scoring unassisted less than a minute into the contest.  Three minutes later Victor scored their first goal.  Tanner Radogna scored with an outside shot (assisted by Brody Secker).  Secker finished with 1g-1a and was named to the All-Tournament team for the Blue Devils.  Victor took their first lead of the game 2-1 with Jackson Mead scoring the first of his two goals.  The play started after Christian Beasaw caught the ball behind the cage after a missed shot.  He quickly turned the ball around to Mead along the left side the crease.  Irondequoit did not let the lead last long as they scored on the ensuing face-off with Carrier adding another unassisted goal to his count.  With 6:25 remaining, the score was tied 2-2.  Each team added a single goal before the end of the quarter.  Victor scored first with long-stick Cam Ryan scoring from a fast-break after a broken clear by the Blue Devils.  Irondequoit`s was also scored during fast-break.  Sophomore Dylan Carey scooped up the loose ball near his defensive restraining line and ran all the way up the field.  He then assisted junior Ryan Avery for the goal.  The score was tied 3-3 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, each team added one goal.  Victor took another lead with the first goal in man-up.  Christian Besaw scored the first of his 2g-1a with a feed from Aiden Clinkscales only 0:32 into the quarter.  The majority of the quarter was back and forth with both teams having a chance at the cage and both defenses standing strong.  Irondequoit's goal was scored with 0:08 remaining on the clock.  Carrier scored his third goal with another unassisted goal.  This time with a straight drive at the goal from the top.  The score remained tied (4-4) going into halftime.

Much like the second, the third quarter was a defensive battle.  Only a single goal was scored with Victor going back on top 5-4.  Herendeen got his first point with an assist to Secker.  All four of his points were in the second half.  In the fourth quarter, Victor came out swinging and added two more goals before Irondequoit responded.  Herendeen assisted another goal, this one to Besaw. This was followed quickly by Mead's second goal of the night (unassisted).  The Blue Devils' had their largest lead of the night with 9:58 left on the clock (7-4).

Irondequoit attempted a comeback with back-to-back scoring.  Cooper Moore scored the first goal and then turned around to assist the second (Oliver Grisdale scoring).  However, it was not enough and Victor`s Herendeen tacked on to more goals to close out the game and send Victor to the State Tournament.

Additional players named to the All-Tournament Team included Drew Williamee (Canandaigua), Zachary Ajauananda (Spencerport), Cam Miller (Irondequoit), Cooper Moore (Irondequoit), Cam Ryan (Victor) and Brody Secker (Victor). Full Story

AQUINAS-14 at PENN YAN-11 -Aquinas defeated Penn Yan to gain their second Section V Title in program history with a 14-11 win over the Mustangs. The last time that the Li`l Irish won the title was also against Penn Yan back in 2010; in that game they snapped a 12 year winning streak for the Mustangs. This year they broke another 12 year winning streak. For the first time since the installation of the Class D Tournament, Section V is sending a different team to the State Tournament. In today’s contest the game was dominated by junior attackman Noah Olbrich. Olbrich finished the game with 8 of the 14 goals for the Li`l Irish and was named Class D All Tournament MVP. Additionally, it was announced today that he was awarded the Section V Sportsman of the Year award for the entirety of the 2024 season throughout the Section. Olbrich was instrumental in leading his team to his victor. The remainder of the scoring was mostly spread out with sophomore attackman Jake Guggino adding 2g-3a and Tano Aurisano adding 2g; both were also named to the All Tournament team. For the Mustangs, Teagan Fingar (2g-2a) and Tukker Fisher (1g-3a) led in scoring with Braden Finger (2g-1a) and Mike Gigliotti (2g-1a) also adding to the tally.Teagan Finger just reached his 100th career assist in the game. Gigliotti and Fisher were both named to the All Tournament team for Penn Yan.

The game in general was a story of streaks. The Li`l Irish started off the game strong with the first four goals which included holding the Mustangs scoreless for the first 13 and a half minutes. Olbrich was the key to the streak with the first three goals of the contest. The first goal was scoring during a fast break off an assist from Jaiden White. The next two were both single player drives from behind the cage. The fourth Li`l Irish goal was scored by Auriuso on another fast-break. This time the assist came from Dom Siesto. The Li`l Irish led 4-0 going into the second quarter. The four-goal lead made all the difference as Penn Yan kept pace with the rest of the scoring, but could never quite catch up the Aquinas. Although they tied the game twice at 4-4 and 5-5, Aquinas never trailed throughout the game.

Penn Yan demonstrated their offensive talent in the opening six minutes of the second quarter with four straight goals of their own. Tukker Fisher was the key to this portion of the Mustang offense when he assisted the first two and scored the third goal. The first two were both scored by Teagan Fingar. With 10:24 remaining on the clock, Fisher pushing inside and dumping the ball off to Fingar. The second and third goals of the run were both fast-break goals with Fingar scoring (from Fisher) and Fisher scoring (from Fingar). The 4-4 goal came at 6:43 with Gigliotti driving from behind the cage and looking to the crease where Collin Bacher finished into the back of the net. The next goal was scored only 0:08 later with a face-off fast-break by Olbrich (assisted by Guggino), to keep the Li`l Irish in the lead. Play continued and Penn Yan responded again with Fingar assisted Bacher on the crease. With 4:50 remaining in the second quarter, the score was tied 5-5. It was last time that Aquinas did not outright lead the game. The Li`l Irish finished out the half with three unanswered goals. Guggino scored from a mid-range shot, followed quickly by an inside feed from Guggino to Ethan Copeland on the crease. The last goal was an unassisted goal by Auriuso. Aquinas led 8-5 going into the halftime break.

In the second half, every time that Penn Yan attempted a run to bring the score closer, Aquinas was able to stop the run with scoring of their own. Bryant VanHousen scored the opener for Penn Yan with a man-up goal with 9:35 left. Olbrich responded with back-to-back goals to increase the Li`l Irish lead to 10-6. Once gain, Penn Yan attempted to push for a come back. This time with scoring from VanHousen and Bryant; both scored with drives from behind the cage. This time the scoring was broken up by a goal from Jaiden White (assisted by Carter Wegman). The third quarter ended with Aquinas leading 11-8. In the final quarter, Fingar led off with two goals. This pulled the game to within a single point (11-10); however, the Li`l Irish had other plans. They added three of their own (two unassisted goals by Olbrich and an unassisted goal from Jack Bell) to secure the Championship. The final point of the game was scored by Penn Yan with Teagan Fingar scoring with a feed from Braden Fingar; however, it was not enough and the Li`l Irish held off the ball for the final two minutes to secure their second title.

Another key component of the win for Aquinas came in between the pipes. Sophomore goalie Jake Gibson finished with 14 saves in the contest including his 300th career save. Gibson was joined by defenseman TJ Geyer in being named to the All-Tournament team for Aquinas. For the Mustangs, defenseman Hunter Sheehan was named to the team. Rounding out the team was senior midfielder Brayen VanHousen (Penn Yan), as well as attackman Griffin Hilimere (Mynderse) and midfielder Tariku Blueye (Marcus Whitman) from the Semi-Final matchups. *+DAY IN REVIEW: SATURDAY - Both the Class C and D Championships were planned for Finger Lakes Community College today, but thunder and lightning storms caused great delays and in the in although the Class C game was won by Honeoye Falls-Lima, the Class D championship was moved to Sunday at 10:30 AM at FLCC.

Honeoye Falls-Lima took the lead in the second quarter and held off multiple advances by Pal-Mac to win the Class C Championship today at FLCC.  The game lasted nearly five hours with multiple stoppages for weather related issues.  The key to the game was possession time and the Cougars had the most of it.  Face-off midfielder and All-Tournament Team MVP Drew Angelo was the key for HFL.  He finished the game with 4g and won a substantial percentage of the face-off draws.  Other big scorers for HFL included Chase Perryman (4a) and Grady Goodberlet (4g), both were placed onto the All-Tournament Team.  Additional scoring came from Marco Vengoechea (3g), Matthew Brassie (2g-1a) and Quinn Kailbourne (1g-1a).  For Pal-Mac, their scoring came from Jackson Dennie (4g), Keagan Hoesterey (3g-1a) and Max Hill (3g), all three named to the All-Tournament Team.  A stand-out for the Red Raiders was goalie Peyton Lich.  He finished the game with an impressive 20 saves.

HFL opened the scoring with an inside feed from Smith to Angelo with 9:09 left on the clock.  Less than 30 seconds later, the Red Raider tied the game for the first time.  Hoesterey scored the first of his three with a drive down the right side of the field.  A minute later HFL took back their lead with back to back goals.  Quinn Kailbourne and Vengoechea both scored unassisted with single player drives to the goal.  The Red Raiders responded with a pair of their own goals to tie the game for the second time.  Dennie scored the first off an inside feed from Hoesterey.  Less than a minute later, Dennie scored on a fast break.  Each team added one more goal to end the first quarter.  HFL`'s Goodberlet and PM`s Hill each added a single goal.  The score was tied for the third time at 4-4 going into the first quarter break.

In the second quarter, Pal-Mac scored the first goal to take their only lead of the game.  Hoesterey scored with a strong independent effort to the goal.  The Red Raiders led for 20 seconds before HFL scored again to tie the game for the fourth time.  HFL then went on a run of five goals and took over the pace of the game.  The first two were unassisted goals from Patrick Donahoe and Angelo.  The second two were both assisted by Perryman with goals to Kailbourne and Vengoechea.  Both teams added one more goal with Pal-Mac seeing scoring from Hill and HFL`s Goodberlet scoring for the Cougars.  HFL led 10-6 going into halftime.

The third quarter was nearly all HFL.  They added another five straight goals while holding Pa-Mac scoreless until the final seconds of the quarter.  The third quarter also began the rain delays.  HFL scored the first two goals (Angelo and Goodberlet) before the first rain delay.  After a significant pause, the game restarted.  HFL came out of the break with another three goal stretch.  The Cougars increased their lead to 15-6 before Pal-Mac scored to break the streak.  The Red Raiders goal was scored by Hoesterey.  The third quarter ended 15-7.

The beginning of the fourth continued the Red Raider run with another four goals by Pal-Mac.  Scoring came from Branden Thomas and three goals from Dennie.  The Red Raiders had pulled the score to 15-11 before the second weather break came.  The second came with just over 7 minutes left on the clock.  The game was paused after the Pal-Mac goal and the game restarted with a face-off.  Angelo continued his dominance and won the ensuing draw to give the Cougars the ball.  They continued to hold off for most of the last seven minutes (including a man-up period).  The Red Raiders had two more chances at the cage, but could not convert.  A late goal with 1:31 on the clock finished up the scoring.

Rounding out the All-Tournament picks in Class C were Pal-Mac defenseman Carson Lich, HFL defenseman Grant Peinkofer, HFL LSM Owen Smith, Geneva midfielder Jeremy Askin and Livonia-Avon goalie Colton Rose.  The Cougars move on to the NYS State Out Bracket game on Wednesday at Williamsville East. Irondequoit came out strong in their 10-6 win over Canandaigua.  The Eagles scored five goals in the opening quarter to take the early lead.  Leading that charge was Steven Clinkscales, who finished with 4g-1a.  The game was plagued with multiple penalties and both teams had changes at man-up.  Irondequoit finished with 4 man-up goals; while Canandaigua was only able to capitalize one single man-up goal.   Full Story

DAY IN REVIEW: WEDNESDAY - There were four games played today and one was a close one. In Class C, Pal-Mac (#1) was a 4-3 winner over Livonia-Avon. They will Play HFL (#2) who beat Geneva today. In Class D Aquinas (#1) beat Marcus Whitman and will play Penn Yan (#2) who beat Mynderse today.

LIVONIA-AVON-3 at PAL-MAC-4 - Pal-Mac stepped up in the fourth quarter to defeat Livonia-Avon 4-3.  In a game that was plagued with penalties, the teams both had multiple attempts at extra-man offense.  The Red Raiders converted on two of their attempts while the Lakers could not convert on any of their attempts.  The man-down defense for Pal-Mac was a key factor of their win.  Livonia-Avon's junior goalie Colton Rose was stellar in the cage.  He finished with 12 recorded saves with many saves being amazing displays of athleticism.  Offensively, for the Red Raiders, Keagan Hoesterey was the standout with a hand in every goal of the night.  He finished with 3g-1a.... MYNDERSE-3 at PENN YAN-14 - Second seeded Penn Yan (12-5) has won every game with Mynderse since 2003 so winning was not a great surprise, but this year, Mynderse (11-7) had a greatly improved season and so the score was a little disappointing for the Blue Devils. Leading the scoring for Penn Yan were Braden Fingar (4g-2a), Tukker Fisher (5g), and Teagan Fingar (2g-2a). Penn Yan goalie Aiden Griffiths recorded 6s/2ga = 75% (42 mins). Scoring for Mynderse were junior attackman Griffin Hilimire (1g), senior midfielder Carson Montoney (1g), junior attackman Jack Brady (1g), and senior attackman Lucas Stevers (1a).            [ BOX SCORE] 

GENEVA-5 at HFL-17 - Eight different players scored goals for HFL(16-2) including Grady Goodberlet (5g), Chase Perryman (4g-1a), Quinn Kailbourne (3g-1a), Owen Smith (1g-3a), and senior face off midfielder Drew Angelo (1g-1a)who won 16+/8- = 67%.  There was no report from Geneva (13-5) at post-time. MARCUS WHITMAN-6 at AQUINAS-17 - The dominating Aquinas offense scored thirteen goals in the first half. Section V Boys Lacrosse Coordinator Mike Simon in conjunction with the Canandaigua National Bank are, once again, sponsoring recognition of noteworthy performances throughout the season.

Offensive Player of the Week

Jonah Jobson - Thomas Attack/Midfield

Jonah Jobson is an eighth grader who has a record of 20g-8a in his first year on the Varsity. Perhaps them most memorable to date is his game-winning, overtime goal when the Titans beat Rush-Henrietta last week. With less than two minutes left in the half, Jonah scored two goals in less than a minute to send the Titans into the break, down 6-7. His final goal, at 2:44 left in overtime came from a feed from Brandon Trottier.

Head Coach Rob Ruller says, "Jonah is a soft spoken eighth grader, who smiles more than he speaks.  He is always willing to do the extra work and has been a big factor in many of our games throughout the season.  To see him get that game winner was an awesome moment for the entire Thomas lacrosse family.   He comes from a long line of lacrosse members who have played for Webster.  Obviously, his dad but also his Uncles and his Grandpa played for Thomas in the early years."

Offensive Player of the Week

Melkamu Blueye - Marcus Whitman Midfielder

Melkamu Blueye score the game-winning overtime goal on a feed from Logan Storms to lift the Wildcats over Bloomfield-Honeoye last week. After returning from an injury during the season, he has been greatly responsible for five winning games for Pal-Mac.

Head Coach Mike Gorton says, "Melkamu missed several games in the middle of the season due to injury.  Since his return, we are 5-1.  Against Bloomfield he carried the team, scoring five goals, including the game winner in OT.  He also had 10 GB's and 4 takes, several of each on our offensive end to regain possession.

He is our workhorse on both ends of the field and one of the hardest workers I've ever coached."

Defensive Player of the Week

Will Gordon - McQuaid Goalie

Will Gordon made twenty-six saves last week as the Knights beat Fairport and Victor. With saves percentage above his average, he recorded ten saves (67%) in the Fairport game and sixteen saves (73%) in the Victor game. His career saves at McQuaid is 397 saves.

Head Coach Alex Gray says, “Will had a great week last week with a 10 saves on Tuesday and a season-high 16 saves on Thursday. He has been our starting goalie since he was a sophomore and he has improved each year. Will is a 2-year captain and has been one of the biggest leaders on our team. He has been a pleasure to coach and he leads by example through his play, his mental toughness, and commitment to his team.”

DAY IN REVIEW: TUESDAY - There were eight quarterfinal games played today and two were in overtime. Irondequoit was a 9-8 winner over Thomas. Spencerport was a 7-6 winner over Brighton in triple overtime. 

EAST UNITED-EASTRIDGE-0 at PENFIELD-19 - Eleven different players scored goals for Penfield including Sophomore defenseman Ronan Boyle, Freshman attackman Griffin Banister, Junior defenseman Braydon Albro, and freshman defensive midfielder Aaron Hardaway who each scored their first Varsity goal. Leading the scoring for Penfield (11-6) were Brodie Joyce (5g-1a), Adam Schembri (2g-3a), and Ethan Aust (2g-1a). Penfield Senior faceoff middie Nikolai Lopatka won 7+/1- = 88% and sophomore Colin Miller won 7+/6- = 54%, reaching is 100th career win in the game. Mason Schembri recorded 2s/0ga = 100% (24 mins), and Dylan Rondeau had 4s/0ga = 100% (20 mins). East United-Eastridge finishes a very good season at 11-6.     [ BOX SCORE] 

GREECE STORM-2 at FAIRPORT-10 - The Red Raiders too a 6-0 halftime lead and coasted for the win with scoring from Michael Priddy (1g-2a), Mitchell Monte (1g-2a), Ryan Priddy (1g-2a),Liam Moreland (2g), and Nicholas Fosegan (2g). Junior offensiveman Makhi Farrier scored his first Varsity goal in the game. In the goal for Fairport was junior Luke Ryan with 9s/1ga = 90% (45 mins). Scoring for Greece Storm (8-9) were Andrew Hill (1g-1a), and Carter Fabian (1g). Facing off for Greece Storm was sophomore Eric Odell with 11+/5- = 69%. In the goal for Greece Storm was senior goalie Jonathan Bucciarelli with 15s/10ga = 60% (48 mins). He ends his scholast career with 777saves (60%)in 2,412 minutes between the pipes.    [ BOX SCORE] 

CHURCHVILLE-CHILI-1 at VICTOR-16 - Ten different players scored goals for Victor (14-3) including senior attackman Jack Herendeen (2g-3a), 8th grade face off midfielder Eli Ricci (3g-2a), freshman attackman Jackson Mead (2g-2a), and senior midfielder Aiden Clinkscales (2g). Facing off for Victor was junior JT Ricci with 5+/3- = 63% and he reached his 100th career faceoff win in the game. HILTON-7 at PITTSFORD-16 - The Panthers took control early in the game and looked back as they won their ticket to the semifinals where they will play McQuaid Jesuit. Senior midfielder Luke Fliss (3g-2a) reached his 50th career goal in the game and he was joined in the offensive book by sophomore midfielder Avery Valenti (5g-1a) and senior attackman Ian Erskine (2g-1a). In the goal for Pittsford (8-7), seventh grader Bear Wehrhein recorded 7s/4ga = 64% (40 mins) and reached his 100th career save.  Scoring for Hilton (9-8) were senior attackman Luke Schindler (1g-1a), junior face off midfielder Drew O`Buck (2g), senior attackman Chase Wilson (1g), senior attackman Mitchell Wise (1g), senior face off midfielder Michael Mitrano (1g), junior midfielder Braydon Pike (1g), and senior attackman Kevin Bell (1a). RUSH-HENRIETTA-7 at MCQUAID JESUIT-14 - The Royal Comets saw a fourth quarter surge to get a big closer as sophomore attackman Jackson Koopers scored and was followed by two from sophomore attackman Andrew Coleman (2g) and one from senior attackman Cody Coleman.  Junior goaltender Daniel Schmitz was credited with 24s/14ga = 63% (48 mins).   There was no report from McQuaid Jesuit (15-2) at post-time.    [ BOX SCORE] 

THOMAS-8 at IRONDEQUOIT-9 in overtime - As one would expect, senior midfielder Jonah Carrier scored the overtime game-winner at 2:43 in the first overtime period. Thomas tied the game in man-up with 3:44 left in regulation and the Titans gain control of the ball first in the overtime period. Irondequoit goalie Sven Habitzreuther mad a point-blank save and cleared the ball eventually to Carrier. Scoring for Irondequoit (14-3) were Cooper Moore (4g), Carrier (3g), and Dylan Carey (2g). SCHROEDER-10 at CANANDAIGUA-14 - The first half was very close with four lead changes and ended with the teams tied at 4-4. After the break the Gray Wolves scored nine unanswered goals including the first four in a row by Marshall Bolster(4g-1a). Junior attackman Drew Williamee added (3g-2a), senior offensiveman Sean Olvany added (2g-2a), and junior attackman Mike Belles added (1g-2a). Mason DePew won 16+/8- = 67%, and freshman Peyton Fritz won 1+/0- = 100%. Schroeder (9-8) scored the last four goals of the game in under three and a half minutes. BRIGHTON-6 at SPENCERPORT-7 in three overtime periods - Junior midfielder Zachary Ajavananda (4g) scored the game winner with a pass from Jayden Mandarano (3a) to send the Rangers to the semifinals where they will play Victor on Friday. There were four ties in the game as the team saw 1-1 in the first quarter and 2-2 in the second. Spencerport took a one goal lead at the end of the third and Brighton freshman midfielder Tim Tourangeau (1g-1a) tied the game in the last quarter.  Scoring for Spencerport (10-7) were junior midfielder Zachary Ajavananda (4g), sophomore midfielder Zach Tortora (2g-1a), junior attackman Jayden Mandarano (3a), and junior midfielder Jamison Brown (1g-1a). DAY IN REVIEW: MONDAY - There were 7 games played today and all of them were won by the high seeded teams except for one. WAYNE-9 at LIVONIA-AVON-14 - The Lakers scored four goals in each of the first three quarters while in their goal junior goalie Colton Rose (13s/9ga = 59% ) recorded his 200th save in a single season which is a record for the Lakers. Leading the scoring for Livonia-Avon (10-7) were 8th grade offensiveman Brayden Arber (5g), junior offensiveman Max McEnerney (3g-2a), sophomore offensiveman Nikolai Hanna (2g-1a), and junior offensiveman Henry Walters (2g). MARCUS WHITMAN-10 at BLOOMFIELD-HONEOYE-6 - In the single upset of the tournament so far, the Wildcats had a five goal second quarter that made the difference. This dispite a three-goal surge by the Pride in just under two minutes in the last quarter took them within two goals. Leading the scoring for Marcus Whitman (8-9) were sophomore midfielder Tariku Blueye (4g), senior midfielder Melkamu Blueye (2g-1a), and senior attackman Teague Gallogly (2g). Facing off for Marcus Whitman was sophomore Cullen Kephart with 9+/8- = 53%. In the goal was sophomore Tyler Speers with 13s/6ga = 68% (48 mins). EDITOR'S NOTE: This weekly summary touches on some of the games played in the recent past and highlights some games of interest in the current week. For more in-depth coverage, click on the DAY OF THE WEEK for more coverage for that day, including box scores, articles, and galleries.

There were forty-six games played last week. There are seventy-four out of section games scheduled and 74 have been played. Section V teams have won 48 and lost 26 (65%). Pal-Mac (16-0) is the only undefeated team at this point.

Looking Back

On Monday there were five games played and one was a close one. Winners today were Geneva, Bloomfield-Honeoye, Gananda, and Greece Storm.

On Tuesday there were thirteen games played mostly in rain as the regular season starts to unwind and three were close ones. Penfield was a 9-7 winner over Brighton. Hilton defeated Aquinas by a score of 9-7. Canandaigua defeated Pittsford by a score of 7-5. Pal-Mac defeated Gananda to give the Red Raiders a perfect regular season at 16-0.

On Wednesday there were two games played and one was a close one. Livonia-Avon defeated Wayne by a score of 12-10. There is only one day left in the regular season. Tano Auriuso (Aquinas) and Cam Ryan (Victor) were named the On Thursday there were thirteen games played and four were close ones. Thomas defeated Rush-Henrietta by a score of 10-9. Marcus Whitman was a 11-10 winner over Bloomfield-Honeoye. Midlakes-Red Jacket defeated Gates Chili by a score of 7-5 and Mynderse defeated Jordan Elbridge (Section III) by a score of 5-3. 

On Friday the tournament seeding was posted. Top Seeds went to McQuaid, Victor, Pal-Mac and Aquinas.

On Saturday the Section V tournaments began with two Class B out bracket games and the seeding held as the high seeded teams won. Churchville-Chili won their game against Brockport and will move on to play Victor on Tuesday. Thomas won their game against Gates Chili and will move on to play Irondequoit on Tuesday.

Looking Ahead

The tournaments start in earnest this weeks with quarterfinals on Monday (C&D) and Tuesday (A&B). 

Semifinal games for C&D are on Wednesday at two sites. The Class C semifinals are at Victor at 5:30 and 8:00. (The times were advanced to accomodate other events.) The Class D semifinals are at Finger Lake Community College (FLCC) at 5:00 and 7:30.

Thursday is reserved for make ups in case of weather or other issues.

Friday will see the semifinals for Classes A and B. The Class A games will be at Gates Chili at 5:00 and 7:30. The Class B games will be at Pittsford Sutherland also at 5:00 and 7:00.

On Saturday, at FLCC, the Class C Championship will start at 11:00 and the Class D Championship is set to start at 1:30.

After Memorial Day, on Tuesday, the Class A Championship, at St John Fisher University, will start at 5:00 and the Class B Championship will start at 7:30.

The reason for the early championships for Classes C and D is that the NYSPHSAA is requiring them to play a pre-quarterfinal game in the State Tournament. Those games will be played on Wednesday May 29th at Williamsville East High School (Section VI). Full Story

BROCKPORT-7 at CHURCHVILLE-CHILI-15 - The Saints (#8) senior attackman Colin Duncan scored six goals,  senior attackman Dominic Hoch added two goals and four assists and, junior Brayden Hoak chalked up three goals and an assist. Churchville-Chili sophomore faceoff specialist Isaac Bailey won 16+/9- = 64% and in the goal Beckham Clancy recorded 10s/6ga = 63% (42 mins). Next up for the Saints is a trip to Victor on Tuesday for a quarterfinal game. There was no report from Brockport at post-time.    [ BOX SCORE] 

GATES CHILI-3 at THOMAS-18 - Scoring for Gates Chili were senior attackman Quentin Cato (1g-1a), junior face off midfielder Michael Alley (1g), and sophomore defenseman Jayden Maryjanowski (1g). The Brackets for the 2024 tournaments will be filled out once each school schedules their game. The brackets are dependent on the data from the rSchool database, so there may be delays that have not happened in the past. You can see them on the brackets page.

In Class A, McQuaid Jesuit (14-2) takes the top seed with an average of 7.56 points, the highest number in the section. Penfield and Fairport came in with 5.94 points. In the first step of the tie-breaker procedure (which is head-to-head) Penfield (10-6) takes the 2nd seed and Fairport (9-7) takes 3rd as Penfield was the winner during the regular season. Pittsford (7-7) came in 4th on the basis of a 10 point win from Orchard Park and four 8 point wins. Hilton (9-7) came in 5th with 5.25 points, while Greece (8-8) takes 6th with 4.56 points. East United (11-5) is 7th as their top points were four 6 point games. Rush-Henrietta (5-11) came in 8th with 3.88 points.

In Class B, Victor (13-3) tops the bracket with an average score of 7.19. The Blue Devils had big points from wins against Niskayuna, Jamesville-DeWitt, and Victor. Irondequoit (13-3) takes 2nd with 6.82 and one 10-point win (McQuaid), and Canandaigua (11-5) take 3rd with 6.25 points. Three teams had 9-7 records and Spencerport takes 4th with 5.43 points and two 10-points wins (Irondequoit and HFL). Brighton takes 5th with no 10-point wins but five 8-point wins. Schroeder is at 6th with 5.25 points with five 8-point wins as well, but has a 2-point loss that made a difference. Thomas (6-10) takes 7th with 4.75, Churchville-Chili (2-14) is in the 8th position with 3.31 points, Brockport (4-10) had 2.79 points and takes 9th and Gates Chili takes 10th with 2.69 points. So, on Saturday, Gates is at Thomas and Brockport is at Churchville-Chili in the first games of the tournaments.

In Class C, Pal-Mac (16-0) is at the top of the bracket with 7.00 points and one ten point win against Geneva coupled with seven wins that gave them eight points each. Honeoye Falls-Lima (14-2) takes 2nd with 6.44 and eight 8-point wins. Geneva (12-4) is in 3rd place with 5.31 points followed by Livonia-Avon (9-7) with 4.94 points. Wayne (7-9) took 5th seed with 4.56 points and Newark (6-9) took 6th place with 4.2 seeding points. Batavia-Notre Dame (0-15) is in 7th with 2.33 points.

In Class D, Aquinas (11-5) takes top honors, with 6.13 points and one 10-point win and eight 8-point wins. Penn Yan (10-5) takes 2nd place with 5.93 points and two 10-point wins (Lake Shore and Geneva). A much improved Mynderse (10-6) comes in at 3rd with 4.81 and Bloomfield-Honeoye (8-8) takes 4th at 4.44. Marcus Whitman (7-9 is 5th with 4.38 and Midlakes-Red Jacket is 6th with 3.5. Gananda (5-11) takes 7th with 3.35 points and Haverling takes 8th with 3.07. Bishop Kearney (4-5) had 3.00 points and only played nine games, but in an email from their Athletic Director, they announced that due to low numbers they would not play the outbracket game against the Rams. As a result, Haverling moves into the quarterfinal round.

Victor defeated Spencerport 10-4 to advance to the Championship game on Tuesday.  The Blue Devils scored the first four goals of the game and never looked back.  Although the Rangers pressed hard to finish the third, the Blue Devils were able to score the final three goals and secure the win.  Leading in scoring for the Blue was senior Jack Herendeen with 2g-4a.  Junior Brody Secker finished with 2g-2a and both Jackson Mead and Aiden Clinkscales finished with 2g.  For the Rangers Zach Tortoara finished with 2g to lead his team.  In the cage for Spencerport, senior Taylor Kaye finished with 13 saves.
