Eastridge Surge Produces Win

-  SPORTSFIVE REPORT:  Eastridge scored the last two goals of the contest to secure an 8-7 win over Greece Arcadia/Olympia. Overall the contest was an even match with both teams having opportunities to secure the victory. Freshman attackman Donovan Fagan assisted Andrew Doktor for the final goal of the contest for the Lancer win. Fagan finished with 1g-2a in only his second game on Varsity.

Statistically speaking, Greece had an advantage in most categories. The Lightning led in ground balls 43-33, in shots 36-34 and at the face off draw. Midfielder Duncan Erickson finished at 78% for the Lightning. He won 14/18 and picked up his own draw six times. He, along with attackman Colby Habermacher, led in ground balls with six. Goalie Gavin Catalano and defensive midfielder Tyler Dalle finished with five each and midfielders Colton Englert and Bryan Collister finished with four each. The Lancers rallied behind midfielder Mike DeSantis and attackman Andrew Doktor. DeSantis finished with 10 shots (7 on cage and 2 goals) and six ground balls. Doktor finished with 9 shots (6 on cage and 4 goals). Leading in ground balls for the Lancers was goalie Chris Doktor with 8. Doktor had a good game between the pipes with a 65% day (13 saves). He was also quite impressive in coming out of the cage for interceptions and loose ground balls. His led his defensive unit to a 67% clearing rate.

Lightning FileThe game had a number of penalties with the teams combining for ten minutes in the penalty box. Five of the games` 15 goals were scored during man-up situations. Greece Lightning came out of the gate looking strong. They scored the opening two goals and took control of the first quarter. Their first two shots resulted in goals. Bryan Collister set up the first goal with a feed to Tyler Dalle, who was set up high on the crease. Less than 40 seconds later the second shots by the Lightning resulted in a 2-0 lead. Collister took the ball straight past the defense and put the ball into the top corner past Doktor. The Lightning kept up their pressure with six more shots, but was held scoreless for the remainder of the quarter. Conversely, Eastridge scored on their last two shots of the opening quarter. The had six shots to start the quarter (only three on cage) before scoring their first goal with 1:50 remaining on the clock. Mike DeSantis got his first assist of the game with a feed to Doktor who was open on the left side at GLE. Doktor was a part of the first four Lancer goals. Doktor assisted Anthony Suero for the second Lancer goal with only 0:03 remaining. Doktor was set up behind the cage and found Suero open on the left side. The game was tied after the first quarter 2-2.

Eastridge took their first lead of the contest early in the second quarter. Fagan scored from the crease off a feed from Doktor only 0:32 into the second quarter. Greece scored the next two goals only 0:31 apart with both goals scored during man-up situations. The first was scored off a loose ground ball by Habermacher on the crease. 0:31 later the Lightning took back a one goal lead. Jake Mathis cut from the top corner during a man-up play and Nick Serio found him as he cleared his defenseman. The final nine minutes of the quarter had the ball going back and forth with neither team scoring and Doktor and Catalano both coming up with big saves. Catalano added three saves to his count and finished the day with 13 saves (62%). Lightning led 4-3 at halftime.

Lightning FileEastridge tied the game up twice during the third quarter with both goals the result of man-up plays. The tied the game at 4-4 with 9:17 remaining in the quarter. Doktor scored with an assist from Fagan from across the cage to catch Catalano out of position. Three minutes passed before the Lightning took their lead back. Dalle took the ball down to their offensive end and worked past his defenseman and the slide before dumping the ball to Collister for his second goal. With 0:27 remaining in the quarter the Lancers tied the game for the fourth time. Bailey Corbett found DeSantis open on the crease to make the game 5-5 going into the final quarter.

The final quarter had all the excitement of the first three quarters. Doktor scored unassisted after beating a triple to give Eastridge their second lead of the game. Greece scored the next two goals to tie the game and take the lead with 5:24 remaining in the game. Habermacher scored, unassisted, with a drive from behind the cage to tie the game. The final Greece goal was scored by Collister. The play began with Doktor coming out of the cage to intercept a pass during a man-up attempt for Greece. He attempted to clear the ball but it was taken away by Habermacher. He forced the ball up top to Collister who found the back of the net just after Doktor returned to the cage. The final five minutes of play belonged to the Lancers. The tying goal came with 4:36 remaining Corbett found a loose ball behind the cage and moved it up to DeSantis for the goal. Greece won the next face off but could not capitalize with a shot on cage. Eastridge`s final goal was scored by Doktor off an assist from Fagan. The Lancer`s were playing man-up, the penalty was released but Greece had yet to get a player into the defensive area. With 1:54 remaining Greece needed a goal. Erickson got them the ball and a time out was called. The Lightning got one more shot on the cage but Doktor came up with the save and tossed the ball into the air for time to expire.

Both teams had big days on their defense. Both Catalano and Doktor made strong saves for their teams and had strong defenses in front of them. For Eastridge, Aidan Ferrin, Noah Johnston and George Bauer had strong defensive games. For Greece, Tyler Alawi, Tyler Dalle and Josh Trubatch all had strong games. At the conclusion of the contest, Eastridge Coach Matt Kleehammer noted how working together can lead to great things. He said to his players, "See what teamwork does".
