It's Over for Section Five

June 7, 2007 - Section Five teams, who swept the Western regionals were all eliminiated in the upstate (semi final rounds) today at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford. Geneva played to a 4-4 half-time tie but Jamesville DeWitt outscored the Panthers 7-1 in the third on their way to a 14-10 victory to send them to the Championship round. Penn Yan also played close half, but lost to JD 7-5. Irondequoit played with West Genny for a while, but the Wilcats took control at the half and ended with a1 11-3 victory.
  
  The first game of the day featured Geneva and Jamesville DeWitt in the Class B Upstate Championship game. After a 2-2 first quarter and a 4-4 tie at the half, JD scored seven goals in the third on their way to an 14-10 victory over the Panthers.
  
The first quarter started out very slowly but ended with four goals scored in a period of 1:05, ending just five seconds before the end of the quarter. Geneva scored the first two goals and JD scored the last two. Alex Love scored an unassisted goal with a drive and a bounce shot, scoring at 1:10. On the following faceoff, Jim Warner picked up the ground ball and took it to the goal, scoring at 0:59. JD came right back with goals at 0:43 (Michael Edwards from Christian Daly) and at 0:05 (Jim Marshall from Daly). The first quarter ended in a 2-2 tie.

The second quarter saw the teams trading goals. JD was first with a goal by Marshall and a feed from Daly at 9:53. Geneva returned 0:32 later with a goal by Alex Love (assisted by Kyle Boncaro). Eight minutes later the Red Rams scored again (Daly unassisted). Twenty seconds later Geneva ended the scoring when Jim Warner scored his unassisted goal. The half ended in a 2-2 tie.
  
After the break, JD fired up with the first two goals; the first at 11:21 with another Marshall from Daly combination and the second at 10:40 when Michael Centra scored on a feed from Marshall. Love scored on a cross goal feed from Boncaro at 9:56 to take the score to 6-5, but the Red Rams scored the next five goals to end the third quarter with an 11-5 lead.
  
After JD scored another goal at the top of the last quarter Geneva staged a come-back, scoring the next three as Tyler Travis, Love and Boncaro each scored unassisted driving goals. JD scored the next two and Geneva finished the scoring with goals at 1:49 (R.J. Gringeri from Travis) and at 0:30 (Love from Dave ReRaddo).
  
Scoring for Jamesville DeWitt were Michael Edwards (3g-1a), Christian Daly (3g-4a), Jim Marshall (4g-4a), Michael Centra (2g), John Clark (1g) and Jacob Bratek (1g). Zack Paz made 6s/10ga for The Red Rams who move on to play John Jay who won in double overtime (against Huntington) in the finals in Syracuse.
  
Scoring for Geneva were Alex Love (5g), Jim Warner (2g), Kyle Boncaro (1g-2a), Tyler Travis (1g-1a), R.J. Gringeri (1g) and Dave DeRaddo (1a). Matt Schutz ended the game with 15s/14ga for th Panthers who end their season at 18-5. 

  Corning East played strong defense and solid offense in their win over Penn Yan in the Class C matchup at St. John Fisher College.
  
Defense was the name of the game as the Trojans defense kept the Mustangs from passing the ball inside while also stopping their outside shots. Overall Penn Yan found it difficult to capitalize the few mistakes made and although the score was close the game was clearly won by Corning East.
  
Penn Yan scored the first goal as Michael Manley fought through a number of players on the crease to pick up a groundball and score at 5:49. Only 0:49 later Corning East was on the board with a cross-crease feed from behind the cage as Matt Tobia scored (assisted by Matt Pierotti).
  
Corning East scored the only two goals of the second quarter. The first at 9:22 saw Tobia get pushed into the crease, but still finished with a goal. The second, at 3:30, was scored by Kellen Simmons on a left to right sweep and a shot to the lower-left (off stick). The half ended with the score at 3-1.
  
The Mustangs scored the lone goal of the third quarter at 0:37 during an extra-man opportunity. Cole Castle scored (assisted by Ryan Cook) to cut the lead to one goal.
  
The scoring flood came in the final quarter with Coring East scoring the first goal with Pierotti scoring, as he stole the ball from R.J. Wickham and scoring on the open net. Wickham finished the game with 4s/7ga while playing all the but the final minute. Penn Yan scored to bring the game back within one goal as Matt Osgood scored with a feed from behind by Adam Trombley. Corning East scored the next three goals at 6:43, 5:25 and 2:50. The third goal was scored as Penn Yan was overextended trying to take the ball out and Mitch Keefer beat his defenseman inside.
  
Penn Yan scored again during an extra man opportunity with 2:00 remaining. Adam Trombley fed Cole Castle for his second assist of the game and 57th of the season. Trombley, who finished the season leading the Section in assists, tied McQuaid Jesuit's Mitch Ritchie for total points this season with 96. The final goal of the game was scored by Manley. Ty Trombley lost the face-off but the Mustangs held the Trojans out of the box and got the ball back. Manley picked upthe ball and ran straight into the goal for a fast-break score.
  
Ty Trombley dominated the face-off's against Empire State Games leading face-off man Carter Bloor winning 11/16 (69%). Bloor only won two face-offs (2/11) and both were on technical wins. Dan Blodgett, using his long-stick, won three of three face-offs against Trombley.
  
In the cage Tom Holden finished with 6s/5ga (55%) for the Trojans.
  
Coring East only had five players take shots in the game (including Bloor taking only one). Kellen Simmons 4s/4on/2g, Matt Tobia 4s/4on/3g, Mitch Keefer 3s/2on/1g and Matt Pierotti 2s/1on/1g.
  
Scoring for Corning East were Tobia (3g), Simmons (2g), Keefer (1g) and Pierotti (1g-1a). East will take on Shoreham Wading River on Saturday in the Class C Championships.
  
Scoring for Penn Yan were Manley (2g), Castle (2g), Adam Trombley (2a), Osgood (1g) and Cook (1a). Penn Yan ended their season at 16-7. 
    
  It was West Genesee over Irondequoit 11-3 in tonight's final semi final match up.
  
The Wildcats scored the first two goals in the first quarter to take a 2-0 lead. The first goal was scored by Aaron Printup, while the second was scored from a face-off fast-break by Adam Mazzoni from Brian Donahue. Tim Desko took 12 face-off's for West Genesee and won 9 (75%).
  
Irondequoit scored the first two goals in the second quarter to tie the score at 2-2. Senior Tim Kleehammer scored the first Eagles goal as he drove straight into the goal. The second goal, assisted by Greg Wright, was scored by Dan Utz whose shot was a top-shelf rocket from the crease. West Genesee scored two more goals in the second to lead 4-2 at the end of the first half.
  
West Genesee scored five goals in the third quarter, while holding the Eagles scoreless. The last two goals were scored during an extended extra-man opportunity as one of the Eagles found themselves in penalty trouble with four non-releasable penalties. Tim Desko scored two goals during the quarter, while Collin Donahue had one goal and one assist. Three of their five goals (the first and last two) were scored during man-up.
  
The Wildcats scored the first goal of the fourth quarter for a 10-2 lead. Nick Kane scored the following goal with an underhand shot from outside with 8:23 remaining. Collin Donahue scored the final West Genesee goal with 7:51 remaining on a fast-break inside dodge.
  
West Genesee controlled the game, and although the Eagles were not out of the game until late in the third quarter, it was a strong Wildcat team against and uncharacteristically off-balance Eagles team. The Eagles only took 20 shots (11 on cage) and many of those shots were not the hard well-place shots that Irondequoit' demonstrated throughout the post-season. By contrast, the Wildcats took 46 shots (22 on cage).
  
In the cage, Zach Nash played the entire game for the Eagles. Nash recorded 9s/4ga (69%)in the first half with many demonstrative crease-shot saves. A weaker second half performance found Nash finishing the game with 11s/11ga (50%). John Galloway played the entire game for the Wildcats and finished with 8s/3ga (73%).
  
Scoring for West Genesee were Brian Donahue (3g-2a), Collin Donahue (2g-2a), Adam Mazzoni (2g-1a), Tim Desko (2g), Aaron Printup (1g) and Kevin Wadach (1a). The Wildcats will play against West Islip on Saturday for the chance for another State Championship.
  
Scoring for Irondequoit were Tim Kleehammer (1g), Dan Utz (1g), Nick Kane (1g) and Greg Wright (1a). The Eagles finish a great season under first year Head Coach Craig Whipple at 19-3.
