Championship Games - 2007

June 1, 2007 - While Penn Yan and Geneva won their games as many predicted, second seeded Irondequoit had a big win against the top seed, Schroeder as they posted a 14-8 win for their first Championship since 2001 when they defeated a combined Webster team 8-7.
     
  Irondequoit used 2 four goal streaks in the second half to defeat Webster Schroeder 14-8 in the Class A Finals.
  
The first half was back and forth with ties occurring at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6 before the Eagles scored four goals in in a 3:05 period in the third quarter to take the lead 10-6. Schroeder scored one goal to make it 10-7, but Irondequoit scored another four straight goals to take a 14-7 lead. The Warriors scored the final goal of the game on a fast-break with 0:07 remaining in the game.
  
Grant Catalino scored two goals, both in the second quarter. Austin Orsini led the Warriors with 2g-2a. Junior attackman Greg Wright and Senior midfielder Kevin Coholan each scored four goals for the Eagles while sophomore Drew Coholan led all point scorers with 3g-2a. Kevin Coholan was named the Class A tournament MVP with 11g in four games. Wright led all Class A point totals with 13g-7a in the tournament.
  
In face-offs, Irondequoit's Nick Kane finished the Championship with 9/16 (56%) over the last two games, Kane was 16/27 (59%).
  
In the cage, Zach Nash recorded 10s/8ga (56%) for the Eagles. Senior Zach Marshall finished with 6s/14ga (30%) for the Warriors.
  
Grant Catalino was named Section V Offensive Player of the Year. Catalino finished the season with 64g-31a. After Sectionals he was 2nd on both the goals and points lists. Catalino will attend Maryland in the fall.
  
Scoring for Irondequoit were Greg Wright (4g-1a), Drew Coholan (3g-2a), Kevin Coholan (4g), Nick Kane (1g-2a), Ian Nash (1g), Andrew Hart (1g) and Tim Kleehammer (1a).
  
Scoring for Webster Schroeder were Austin Orsini (2g-2a), Mike Barilla (2g), Grant Catalino (2g), Andy Winslow (2a), Mike Tota (1a) and Chris Topping (1g).
       
  In Class B, Geneva won the first and third quarters 5-1 and the second and fourth 4-2 on their way to an 18-6 victory over McQuaid Jesuit who were in their first ever Sectional finals round game.
  
Although the Knights attempted several comebacks, they never scored more then one consecutive goal. The Panthers played strong, consistent offense and defense. Senior Andy Torruella had a great individual effort in holding Section V leading goal scorer Mitch Ritchie to two goals.
  
While some of the best Section Five officials were on the championship games, both Class B teams were penalty ridden, being assessed slashes and unnecessary roughness calls throughout the game. Both teams seemed to be over-aggressive and the result was more penalties then any of the other Section V Final contests.
  
In the cage, Matt Schutz finished with 7s/6ga (54%). McQuaid Jesuit played two goalies, junior Dan Caufield played the first three quarters with 14s/15ga (48%) and sophomore Harry Goluses played the fourth quarter with 2s/3ga (40%).
  
Senior R.J. Gringeri earned the Section V Class B All-Tournament MVP honors with a total of 8g-3a. In the finals Gringeri finished with 15/23 (65%) at the face-off and over the last two games was 24/43 (56%).
  
Scoring for Geneva were Greg Bonney (3g-5a), Kyle Boncaro (4g-3a), R.J. Gringeri (3g-2a), Alex Love (3g), John Warner (2g), Eric Legott (2a), Willy Rago (1g), Anthony Fili (1g), Eric Peterson (1g), Andy Torruella (1a) and Jim Warner (1a).
  
Scoring for McQuaid Jesuit were Mitch Ritchie (2g-1a), JD Ayer (2g), Dan Sturnick (1g-1a) and Nick Caton (1g)
  
  The Mustangs won their 10th consecutive Section V Championship this afternoon with a 20-3 win over #3 seeded Waterloo. Waterloo defeated Livonia in double overtime to make it to the finals.
  
Penn Yan scored the first eight and last seven goals. The three Waterloo goals were scored (in order) on an extra-man opportunity, a cross-crease pass and a fast-break. Penn Yan scored in a variety of ways ranging from a rebounded shot, to a straight drive from the top, to a fast-break. Both the Mustang offense and their defense, were strong and demonstrative throughout the game.
  
Freshman attackman Adam Trombley played another outstanding tournament game, making his tournament performance (4g-5a, 4g-4a, 4g-4a) which earned hum the MVP honors for the Class C tournament. Trombley scored more points than any player across the classes with 12g-13a total.
  
Section V Defensive Player of the Year, Michael Manley played both offense and defense in today's game and finished the game scoring 4g-1a.

Scoring for Penn Yan were Adam Trombley (4g-4a), Matt Osgood (4g-2a), Michael Manley (4g-1a), John Linnan (2g), Cole Castle (2g), Ryan Cook (2g), Dan Wolfe (1g-1a), Ty Trombley (1g), Chris Carlson (1a), Dana Wilber (1a) and Josh Plumlee (1a). Three goalies split time for the Mustangs, although only R.J. Wickham 4s/3ga (57%) saw any shots on cage.
  
Scoring for Waterloo were with one goal Josh Mateo, Dylan Chilson and Mike Ruiz IV and with one assist were Curtis Brosius and Jeff Wadhams. Junior Shawn Andrus recorded 12s/20ga for the Indians.
