Quarters Final Games - Class A

May 25, 2007 - It will be an all Webster semi final in the upper bracket of the Class A tournament as Thomas (#5) beat Fairport (#4) in double overtime. Schroeder beat last years's Champion, Penfield 13-4. All the other top seeded teams won, including Irondequoit, Canandaigua, Penn Yan Midlakes, Livonia, Waterloo and in Class B, Victor.
     
   Perhaps the best game of the day was at Fairport, where Webster Thomas midfielder Dom Scalzo scored the winning goal in double overtime to advance the Titans to a semifinal game against cross town rival, Schroeder. Although Scalzo was the hero, performances by Thomas goalie Austin Fox and Fairport goalie Kristoffer Sterzin kept both teams in the game right to the end.
  
Right from the outset, both goalies made dramatic and key saves. In the first quarter Fox made at least four "big saves" while Sterzin made three. Fairport was first to score, a "worm-burner" shot by Tom Rynn after a feed from Shawn Runyon at 7:37. The Fairport defensemen and d-middies were aggressive and dominated in the first quarter, often taking the ball away from Thomas. The dominance, however did not last into the second half as the Titans saw considerably more ball time. Rynn scored an unassisted goal at 5:58 as he ran straight from the Fairport clear to the Thomas goal. With 2:31 left in the quarter, Brandon Rothfuss scored an unassisted goal with a tight cut from behind the goal. The Titans tied the score at two when Nick Scalzo put one in the nets at 0:12 with an assist from Max Gurowski.
  
Fairport went ahead at 9:20 in the second quarter when Aaron Jones drove from behind the goal, and raising his stick above his head, shot the ball high into the corner of the goal. On the next faceoff, Webster won and a middie picked up the ground ball but was forced toward his defensive end of the field where he dropped the ball which was picked up by Brendan Saylor and passed to Mike Danylyshyn for the Fairport goal. Repeating their performance in the first quarter, Thomas came back to tie the game but then added another to take their first lead in the game. Dom Scalzo started with the ball after a Titan time out and made an outside bull dodge and scored with a bounce shot at 8:38. Junior defenseman, Jake Ziegler cleared the ball for Thomas and when he was not picked up, took the ball right to the goal, scoring the first of his two such goals at 4:56. The Titans scored the go-ahead goal at 2:32 when Rothfuss hit Nick Scalzo high on the crease where he turned hard and shot, scoring with a bounce shot.
    
Fairport tied the score at five with 0:10 left in the half when Martin Manilla scored with an assist from Runyon in man up. After five or six quick passes Manilla scored with a high corner shot.
  
Fairport started the scoring after the halftime break, with a goal by Danylyshyn (assisted by Rynn) but Thomas returned with a goal by Nick Scalzo (assisted by Max Gurowski). The score was tied at six until Thomas scored again when Ziegler scored another long stick clearing goal at 5:58. Fairport tied the score at seven with a crease feed from Saylor to John McDonnell at 4:38. The Titan defense created great turnovers with well-timed doubles against Fairport attempts to drive to the goal. The Red Raiders took the lead at 2:40 when Saylor scored with a one-handed shot and a cut from behind the goal. The lead did not last long as Dom Scalzo scored an unassisted goal with a sweep to the left and a hard side-arm shot at 1:07. The teams were tied at eight at the end of three quarters.
  
The combination of the heat and emotion made for a stressful fourth quarter. Fairport scored first with a drive from the top of the box by Eric Martin who scored with a hard sidearm shot landing stick-side high past Fox. The lead was short-lived as Thomas scored 27 seconds later when Pat Morrill drove from a clear, scoring at 9:23. Manilla scored for the Red Raiders at 4:16 with a one-handed shot. Fairport gained the ball after the face but eventually lost possession on a crease feed that was knocked down by the Titan defense and picked up by Fox in the goal. The take away led to the eventual tying goal at 0:53 when Rothfuss cut to the goal-line extended and received the ball from Max Gurowski.
  
The first four minute overtime period saw chances by both teams. In the second overtime period Fairport controlled a great deal of ball time, taking six shots, only one of which ended up on cage. When Thomas finally had their chance, Dom Scalzo scored the game winner with a hard horizontal sweep to the left, scoring at the 2:35 mark and sending Thomas to the semi finals.
  
Scoring for Thomas were Rothfuss (2g-1a), Nick Scalzo (3g), Gurowski (3a), Dom Scalzo (3g), Ziegler (2g) and Morrill (1g). Austin Fox had 18s/10ga for Thomas (14-4).
  
Scoring for Fairport were Rynn (2g-1a), Runyon (2a), Jones (1g), Danylyshyn (2g), Saylor (1g-2a), Manilla (2g), McDonnell (1g) and Martin (1g). Kristoffer Sterzin had 9s/11ga for Fairport who end their season at 10-8.
  
 A strong fourth quarter by Midlakes secured the 10-3 win against Pal-Mac in the Class C quarter finals. Pal-Mac led 1-0 after the first quarter and Midlakes was ahead 2-1 at the half. At the end of the third quarter Midlakes was up 4-2, but 6 goals in the last quarter sealed the deal.
  
Scoring for Midlakes were Ben Uveges (2a), Glen Stevenson (2g-1a), Tyler Brooks Lambert (1g-3a), Clay Hemminger (3g-1a) and Nick Newland (3g-1a). Jared Schoonerman had a great day in the goal with 24s/3ga (89%). Midlakes (9-10) meets Penn Yan in the semifinals.
  
Scoring for Pal-Mac were Mike Christ (1a), Steve VanDewalle (1g), Pete Maklos (1g) and Pete Barry (1g). Jon Reeves made 13s and Tim Doyle had 3s for the Red Raiders.
    
   Tonight's game between Churchville-Chili and Irondequoit was a game of three different parts ending with a 14-6 Eagles victory.
    
The first period, encompassing the first 11:00 of play, saw a strong Eagles offense, a medium Saints defense and no Saints offense. Irondequoit score three goals. The first was by Kevin Coholan (assisted by Greg Wright). Kevin Coholan led both teams with the most goals (four), but was third in total points for the Eagles. Wright (3g-5a) led all athletes. The next two goals were both by Drew Coholan (3g-2a) the first a straight drive from the top and the second with a crease feed from Andrew Hart.
    
With 0:56 remaining in the quarter, the second part started which consisted of a strong offense and an even stronger defense for the Saints and a lack-luster performance from the Eagles. The Saints scored six goals while Irondequoit scored three. The second part last until 3:00 remaining in the third quarter. With 0:56 left Churchville-Chili's Ben Rossignolo scored on a cross-crease pass from Jamie Englert. This was one of only two non-fast-break goals for the Saints. The Eagles, not to be out-done at that moment scored their last goal of the first quarter with 0:17 left. Irondequoit had a fast-break coming down the field and Wright ran straight in for his first goal of the game. The first quarter ended at 4-1 in favor of the Eagles and it seemed as though Irondequoit was going to control the game.
    
At the start of the second quarter the unexpected happened. The opening face-off was won by Nick Kane, but Kane (who was strong throughout the game at the face) was stripped by senior defenseman Brian Briggs at half-field. The ball was forced forward and The Saint's Doug Hemink scored (assisted by Rossignolo). The next face-off was won by Hemink who then passed to Rossignolo for his face-off fast-break goal. In a matter of 0:41 the Saints were back in the game (4-3). The Saints offense and set defense were very strong, with quality slides coming early, but still balanced before Irondequoit could get the ball into play. Irondequoit's first goal came from a broken clear with Wright feeding Tyler Kleehammer. The Eagles took another two goal lead but it was not long before Cory Mee scored on another fast-break after getting his own ground ball in the Saints defensive end of the field. The Saints were back within one (5-4). Irondequoit scored the last goal of the quarter with a crease feed by Drew Coholan to his brother Kevin with 3:12 remaining. The score was 6-4 at the half.
    
The third quarter continued to see strong play by the Saints. Churchville-Chili scored the first goal of the quarter to bring the score back within one goal (6-5). Ryan Grogan scored from another fast-break (assisted by Hemink). With 7:14 left, the Eagles scored another goal after a one-on-one drive by Drew Coholan. The Saint's scored their last goal of the game and brought the score within one for the fourth time with 3:55 remaining as Grogan passed the ball to Damien Pagano. No Saints player took more than three shots and eight players took at least one shot. Irondequoit dominated the shooting for the game with 40s/21on/14g to the Saint's 16a/13on/6g. During the third quarter the Saints had seven one-on-one takes. Irondequoit turned up the momentum and slowly but surely showed why they have been so successful this season. The Eagles scored one more in the third quarter and then added six more in the fourth while holding the Saints scoreless. This was the beginning of the third period that featured strong Eagles play and a weak Saints offense and defense.
    
Briggs, playing in his last game as a Saint, recorded 10 ground balls for his team. Nick Kane led all players with 11 groundballs for the Eagles. Kane dominated the face-offs, winning 12/18 (66%).
    
Although, the Saints played a good defensive game both times they played the Eagles this season, their offensive was lacking. Churchville-Chili scored a majority of their goals against Irondequoit on fast-break situations (6/8).
    
In the cage, senior Zach Nash played nearly the whole game with 7s/6ga (54%) for the Eagles. Sean Kettles finished with 7s/14ga for the Saints. Kettles, at the moment, is listed as fifth in the section with a year-long 62.89%.
    
Scoring for Irondequoit were Wright (3g-5a), Drew Coholan (3g-2a), Kevin Coholan (4g), Tyler and Tim Kleehammer (1g-1a) each, Hart (2a), Kane (1g) and Bryan Haight (1g). The Eagles will play Canandaigua in the lower bracket of the Class A semifinals.
    
Scoring for Churchville-Chili were Rossignolo (2g-1a), Hemink (1g-2a), Grogan (1g-1a), Mee (1g), Pagano (1g) and Englert (1a). The Saints end their exciting season at 15-3.
    
 A slow, but methodical effort by Victor put them in the semi finals with a 10-8 win over visiting Brighton. Victor led 2-1 after the first quarter, 4-2 at the half and 7-5 after three quarters.
  
Scoring for Victor were Ethan Payne (2g-2a), Steve Hearn (2g-1a), Frank Valenti (2g), Alex Rogemoser (1g-1a), Jason Houtenbrink (1g-1a), Eric Willman (1g-1a), Joe Coleman (1g) and Andy Savage (2a). Cody Bennett made 8s/8ga for Victor (10-9) who will face Geneva in the semi finals.
  
Scoring for Brighton were Ryan Conti (3g-2a), Jake Anderson (2g), Justin Hillary(1g-1a), Taylor Galbraith (1g) and Josh Uline (1g). Noah Berg had 12s/10ga and ends his excellent career for Brighton. No report from Brighton.
  
 Waterloo started with a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and added 5 more in the second and third quarters before winning 17-7.
    
Scoring for the Indians were Rob Goodenow (2g), Mike Ruiz (2g), Jeff Wadhams (2g-2a), Josh Mateo (4g-4a), Curtis Brosius (3g-1a), Nelson Boyd (3g) and Dylan Chilson (1g). Shawn Andrus had 10s while playing most of the game and Zach Bowen finished the game recording 2s for Waterloo who will face Livonia in the semi finals at Hobart next week.
    
Scoring for Mynderse were AJ Bachman (1a), Anthony Clark (1g), Dustin Luckinbill (1g-1a), Kevin McCully (4g), Josh Kurdziolek (1a) and Chris D'Amato (1g). Ben LaValley had 7s/17ga for Mynderse. No Report from Mynderse.
    
  Penn Yan was the 24-1 winner against Haverling-Haverling, using ten different players in the scorebook. Scoring for the Mustangs were Adam Trombley (4g-5a), Matt Osgood (4g-4a), John Linnan (2g-1a), Cole Caslte (7g), Ryan Cook (2g-2a), Dan Wolfe (2a), Preston Maciejewski (1g-2a), Josh Plumlee (2g), Brendan Minor (1g) and Dana Wilber (1g). RJ Wickham had 4s/oga in the first quarter while Ethan kamholtz finished the game with 2s/1ga. Penn Yan will play Midlakes in the semi finals.
   
Scoring for Haverling was Nick Venuti (1g). Chris Wolfer had 11 saves for the Rams.
  
   Webster Schroeder handily defeated defending Class A Champion Penfield 13-4 in their quarterfinal game. Schroeder won every quarter (4-1, 5-1, 3-2, 1-0) and dominated in all statistical fields.
  
Schroeder opened up the scoring with a goal by Austin Orsini as he ran straight down the center of the field and shot to the upper right for the goal. Orsini had the second most shots for the Warriors (6s/4on/2g). The second goal of the game came from Grant Catalino as he scored his as usual in the regular season, on a drive from the side. Catalino led all shooters with 12s/6on/4g. The Patriots made the scoreboard with 8:12 remaining in the first quarter on a crease pass by Kyle Vanthof to Kyle Denhoff. Vanthof was the only Patriot to contribute more than one goal (and the only player to have any assists). Vanthof also led Penfield in shooting (7s/4on/1g). The Warriors scored two more to finish out the quarter. The first was a straight drive from the top of the box to a low shot by Andy Winslow. The next goal was scored on an outside shot by Mike Tota and scored during extra-man offense. Webster was 3/4 on EMO while Penfield was 1/5. Tota led all players for either team with 4g-1a. The score was 4-1 after one quarter.
  
Webster continued their scoring in the second quarter with the first five goals. The first two came as Chris Mason looked to an open Tota on the crease, followed 0:10 later when Tota picked up the ground ball from the face-off in the restraining box and fired for this third goal of the game. Penfield was forced to call a time-out to slow down the Warrior momentum. After the time-out and only 0:13 later, the Warriors scored again from another fast-break. Drew Palmer picked up the ground ball during the face-off and looked quickly up the field to an open Catalino who fired the ball from outside for his second goal of the game. An outside side-arm shot by Nick Mooney was the next Warrior goal at 3:29. Only 0:19 second later, Catalino scored again. After a shot was deflected wide, Catalino started with the ball behind the cage and came around from the side for another of his no-nonsense goals. Vanthof scored his only goal of the game next with 1:54 left in the half. Connor Rice, who played only a few plays in the first half and most of the second half, drove from behind causing the Warrior defense to shift and leave Vanthof open up top. After stepping around his man, the slide was no where to be found and Vanthof had an open shot on Zach Marshall. Marshall, a senior, played most of the game (coming out for an injury for 3:00 at the end of the third) and finished the game with 13s/3ga (81%). The score was 9-2 at the end of the half.
  
A penalty allowed the Patriots to start with the ball going into the third quarter although they could not capitalize. Schroeder scored with 10:09 left as Catalino won a hard-fought ground ball at midfield, looked up to Tota who passed cross-crease to Orsini for his second of the game. The Warriors won the next face-off as Palmer picked up another ground ball. Palmer led the Warriors with seven GBs. Barilla and Topping took all the face-offs for Schroeder and both did quite well; Barilla 9/13 (69%) and Topping 5/7 (71%). The third quarter was back and forth with Penfield scoring the next goal. The Patriot's lone man-up goal came when Vanthof passed cross-crease to Rice who shot low for the goal. Catalino took a hard shot from point-blank range which was saved by sophomore Brady Del Pozzo, but Catalino was quick and caught his own rebound. Catalino then finished with a second shot that produced the goal. Del Pozzo played most of the game, recording 8s/12ga (50%). Derek VanOrman played the the rest, making 2s/1ga (67%). Penfield's Dan Huntington scored next with a straight drive ending in a hard side-arm shot that sailed over Marshall's stick. Webster finished up the scoring in the third quarter with their second extra-man goal. Barilla took a shot that missed the cage, followed by a Tota ground ball. Tota looked back to the crease and found Barilla open. The scored was 12-4 after three quarters.
  
Schroeder scored the lone goal of the fourth quarter in man-up. Tota scored his final goal with a side-arm shot (assisted by Orsini). Both teams were strong in clearing; Penfield 12/14, Schroeder 12/16. Total shooting was relatively close; Penfield 32s/17on/4g, Schroeder 38s/23on/13g. Schroeder won the ground ball battle 39-23.
  
Webster Schroeder goes on to play Webster Thomas on Wednesday in the Class A semifinals, in an all Webster battle.

Scoring for Penfield Vanthof (1g-2a) and with 1g Rice, Huntington and Denhoff. Penfield ends their season at 9-8.
    
 Junior attackman Connor Henderson set a school record with ten goals, eight of which were assisted, as he help Canandaigua take a 16-5 win from visiting Pittsford in a Class A quarter final game. Kevin Peck won 14/15 face offs for the Braves.
   
Scoring for Canandaigua were Charlie Sauter (1g-2a), Evan Roth (1a), Connor Henderson (10g), Austin Rogers (1a), Justin Tomzak (1a), AJ Groot (4g-1a), Brian Scheetz (5a) and Jeremy Brown (1g-1a). Scott Bement played the first 42 minutes of the game, making 9s/5ga and Kyle Carson played the last 6 minutes and made 2s for the Braves (17-2) who will Irondequoit on Wednesday.
   
Scoring for Pittsford were Cam Edmiston (1g), Connor McDermott (2g), Doug Milano Johnson (1g-2a), TJ Iuppa (1g) and Brett Bridges (1a).
Brendan Green played in the goal until the last 3 minutes and had 15s/16ga for the Panthers who finish at 5-10. No report from Pittsford.
    
 Livonia scored six goals in each of the first two quarters and held Batavia to one in each quarter, as they won a 17-2 victory over the visiting Blue Devils in a Class C quarter final game.
   
Scoring for the Bulldogs were Brian Sciera (5g-3a), Tyler Russell (4g-5a), Chris Bausch (3g), Oren Taylor (2g-1a), Jeff Wester (1g-2a), Aaron Miller (1g), Mike Donals (1g) and Gaelin Walsh (1a). Justin Becker recorded 11s/2ga for Livonia who will play Waterloo in the semifinals on May 29th. No report from Batavia.
