Sat - Irondequoit and R-H win big games

May 12, 2007 - There were big wins today for Irondequoit (over Schroeder) and Rush-Henrietta (over Fairport), while Thomas won an OT victory over Eastridge and Penfield used a last quarter push to beat Pittsford. Other winners today included HFL, C-C, Brockport, GC and Brighton.
  
 In the first game, played just a week ago, Schroeder won by one goal. In one of the highlight games of the season, this time, Irondequoit scored the first two goals of the game, and never lost the lead on their way to a 7-5 win over visiting Schroeder. The Eagles executed a smart, well planned game strategy that balanced taking time off the clock, with well timed drives to the goal.
  
Scoring soon after the start of the game, Kevin Coholan drove from the left side of the cage and put one in stick side high for the Eagles. At 8:19 Drew Coholan received an inside crease feed from his brother Kevin to give Irondequoit a 2-0 lead. Grant Catalino scored the first of his 4g-1a at 5:11.
  
Catalino was involved in all five Schroeder goals. Nick Kane ended the scoring in the first quarter when, at 4:53 he found himself "man up" on a clearing fast break and drove to the goal to give Irondequoit a 3-1 lead at the end of the quarter.
  
Austin Orsini scored a man up goal with an inside feed from Catalino at 9:40, but the Eagles responded on the next face off with an outside shot by Kane that bounced off the goalie and over his shoulder for the goal. The Eagles increased their lead to 5-2 when Drew Coholan cut to the crease and received the ball from Greg Wright who was behind the goal. At the half, Irondequoit led 5-2.
  
Catalino, determined and focused after the break, scored the next two goals at the top of the third quarter. After being called for slashing, he entered the game at the end of the penalty and immediately received the ball near the substitution area. Taking advantage of the mismatch, he ran the ball to the middle of the field and then drove hard, straight down the center of the field putting a hard shot past Zach Nash.
  
About one minute later, and as if to say, "It's time for us to get back in this," Catalino picked up the ball after a pushing call and ran to the right, across the front of the goal and scored with an outside, sidearm shot that hit in the upper right hand corner. With the score 5-4, both teams moved the ball back and forth for more than half the quarter. Irondequoit spent quite a bit of time moved the ball around the cage and was warned to "keep it in" the goal area a number of times, and on one such occasion, Wright drove hard to the goal on a tight cut near the crease line and fired a high shot over his shoulder to give the Eagles a 6-4 lead at the end of three quarters.
  
With 9:13 remaining in the game, and after a warning, once again, to "keep it in", Drew Coholan scored Irondequoit's last goal (unassisted) on a drive from the left and a shot high and left. Although Schroeder had a number of opportunities, either the ball missed the cage or were stopped by Nash until 0:36 when Catalino scored an unassisted goal from a broken Irondequoit clear.
  
One key to the Irondequoit win was the excellent team defense played by the Eagles. Long stick defensemen, Cory Smock, Jimmy Walsh, Sean Davern and Ian Nash were patient and under the direction of Zach Nash, gained strength from their working together. The defensive midfield play by the Eagles allowed for numerous takes that gave Irondequoit more ball time. That lack of that ball time for the Warriors caused frustration and seemed to add to the lack of focus and increase in simple mistakes that have been uncharacteristic of the powerful Schroeder team.
  
The Warriors now have suffered losses only to Irondequoit and to Canandaigua and with only two games left are guaranteed to be a ".75" team, along with Irondequoit. Irondequoit's win earned them ten points for the win, which will surely help their position in the seeding which takes place next week. The fact that both teams will each earn ten points from each other will not have an impact relative to each other, but will help them in their position against others.
  
Scoring for Irondequoit were Drew Coholan (3g), Kane (2g), Wright (1g-1a) and Kevin Coholan (1g-1a). Zach Nash had 8s/5ga (53%) for the Eagles (12-2).
  
Scoring for Schroeder were Catalino (4g-1a) and Orsini (1g). Zach Marshal had 4s/7ga for the Warriors (12-2).
        
 After losing 11-10 to the Red Raider the first time around, the Royal Comets were looking for a win this morning. Although the game was close for three quarters, Rush-Henrietta pulled ahead in the opening two minutes of the fourth quarter and defeated Fairport 8-7 in a Monroe County division-1 contest.
  
Fairport got the early lead at 8:24 when attackman Aaron Jones scored (unassisted). Rush-Henrietta tied up the second when at 5-:19 senior Brian Hantzis scored (unassisted). Jones scored the second goal for Fairport at 4:15 (assisted by Shawn Runyon). Again RH tied up the game at 1:19 as junior Nate Delone scored (unassisted). The score was tied 2-2 after the first quarter.
  
The Royal Comets possessed the ball for much of the 2nd quarter. Fairport scored their third goal at 2:37 when Mike Danylyshyn scored an extra man goal (assisted by Eric Martin). Fairport scored three goals on three attempts on extra-man offense this morning. RH tied the game for the third time when at 2:03 junior Colin Cornaire scored (assisted by senior Matt Moran). Fairport ended the scoring for the half when Martin scored (unassisted). Going into halftime Fairport was holding on to a 4-3 lead.
  
The Royal Comets tied things up for the fourth time at 5:55 in the third quarter when Cornaire added his second unassisted goal. Fairport’s Brandon Saylor scored (assisted by Martin Manilla) to give Fairport the lead at 5-4 with 1:05 remaining in the third. RH tied up the goal for the fifth time at 0:41 when Hantzis scored (unassisted) with a spectacular individual move from behind the cage. After three quarters of play the score was tied 5-5.
  
Justin Rose picked up his own ground ball to score a face-off fast-break only 0:11 into the fourth quarter. This goal gave the Royal Comets their first lead of the contest. R-H won the next face off and Cornaire added his third unassisted goal at 10:51 to increase the Rush-Henrietta lead to two. This was the first time either team had led by more than one. Rose continued his face-off dominance in the fourth and added his second goal at 10:08 and was the last Rush-Henrietta goal. Play went back and forth until Aaron Jones scored on a man up situation with 1:49 remaining to bring Fairport to within two. R-H regained possession, but after stepping out of the box, lost the ball back to Fairport. Senior Tom Rynn scored with only 0:55 remaining. Fairport got a chance to tie the game but missed the cage wide with 0:04 remaining. The Red Raiders called a time-out and tried to set-up a play. Danylyshyn took the ball and looked to pass to the inside crease but goalie Matt McShea intercepted the pass and secured the victory of Rush-Henrietta.
  
Coach Mike Gottko says of his team, "Our face-off play to start the fourth quarter generated goals to give us our first lead. The hard work and determination displayed by our players gave us that lead and our defense held on at the end to preserve the win against a talented Fairport team.”
  
In the cage, McShea recorded 12s/7ga (63%) for the Royal Comets (8-5). Kristoffer Sterzin finished the game with 7s/8ga (46%) for the Red Raiders (7-6).

Scoring for Fairport were Jones (3g), Martin (1g-1a), Danylyshyn (1g), Saylor (1g), Rynn (1g), Runyon (1a) and Manilla (1a).
  
 After falling behind 7-5 toward the end of the game, Penfield scored three goals in the last 1:30 of the game to win 8-7 over Pittsford in Monroe County division-1 competition . The game this morning was a story of two, less then two minute periods, one for each team.
  
Penfield began the scoring with a fast-break at 7:24 as Dan Huntington scored (unassisted) by running the ball straight in. Pittsford scored their first goal 3 minutes later when Connor McDermott scored (assisted by Chris Kist). Kist led all scorers for the game with 3g-1a. Kist also led all players in number of shots, taking 13s/6on/3g. The second of Penfield's goals was scored from a face-off fast-break. The Patriots scored three goals from face-off fast-breaks (two by Paul Leonard and the third by Kyle Vanthof). This goal was scored as Leonard picked up the ground ball off the wing and ran all the way down for the goal. Overall Pittsford's James Purpura dominated the face-off's in the first half winning 6/7 (all but the goal). Although in the second half Purpura took a hard hit and only won 4/8, putting his game total at 10/15 (66%). The score at the end of the first quarter was 2-1 Penfield.
  
The Patriots scored the first goal of the second quarter at 9:52 as Vanthof scored from a drive down the left side of the box and ripped a side-arm shot past Brendan Green. Pittsford scored their second goal as Kist took the ball himself and forced the ball into the back of the net driving hard at the goal and dodging two men to get there. The score going into the halftime break was 3-2 in favor of the Patriots.
  
The Patriots also opened up the scoring in the third quarter as they scored at 11:52 and 8:14. Their first goal, as is indicated by the time, was their second face-off fast-break of the game, (this time scored by Vanthof). The second goal was also a fast-break goal as Alex Nowak fed the ball to Kyle Denhoff. Denhoff was open on the crease and got the shot off before any defensemen could stop him (this was the first of three Penfield goals scored in this manor). After three more minutes of back and forth play the first of the two game changing moments occurred. The Panthers scored their third goal at 5:16 as Kist took a hard outside shot (assisted by Jamie Leone). Only 0:39 second later Kist scored again driving hard into the cage. On the ensuing face-off the Panthers scored a face-off fast-break of their own as Brett Bridges (taking the first face-off after Purpura took the hit) picked up his own ground ball and ran it all the way down and into the cage (taking only eight seconds to do it). The Panthers had tied the game up in 0:47 seconds. The score remained tied for the rest of the quarter with the third ending at 5-5.
  
Pittsford continued to add to its score with the first two goals of the final quarter. Doug Milano-Johnson assisted on both of the goals. The first was scored by Bridges on an outside shot and the second has a feed from behind GLE to Conor McDermott who was looking for the pass on the crease. With 8:02 left in the game Pittsford had taken a two goal lead. The Panthers controlled the game and held the Patriots scoreless for seven minutes.
  
During this period Green played an instrumental part. At 4:12 the Panthers went man-down and after moving the ball around, Huntington came from behind with a hard cut close the the crease, Green made a point blank save to keep the Panthers ahead. With 1:33 remaining the Patriots found Vanthof open cross-crease but again Green made a quick moving saved as he came across the crease to stop a hard shot.
  
This all led to the second rapid scoring portion. With 1:21 left (after stopping the clear) the Patriots found their second inside crease look as Kevin Roe found Kevin Green open on the crease. On the ensuing face-off the Patriots scored their third face-off fast-break goal as Leonhard (again on the wing) picked up the ground ball and brought it all the way in for the tying goal (using up only 0:13 second). The Patriots won the next face-off as Nowak picked up the ball and the Patriots showed good patience as they waited for their opening. With only 0:21 remaining (1:00 after their first goal) they found the opening with Huntington left unguarded on the crease allowing James Dwyer to find him. Huntington turned and got the shot off before any defenseman could get close enough to stop him, and just like that the Patriots had scored three goals to take the lead in less then 1:00.
  
Kist won the next face-off and ran the ball down looking for his a goal of his own, but missed the cage wide allowing sophomore goalie Brady Del Pozzo to be closest to the end line. Penfield had the ball back and the was able to run out the clock.
  
Shooting was relatively close between the teams as Pittsford shot 36s/18on/7g while Penfield shot 34s/21on/8g. Also leading for the Panthers were Bridges 10s/5on/2g and McDermott 6s/5on/2g. In total the Panthers had eight different players who took a shot. The Patriots had seven players who took shots led by Vanthof 9s/6on/3g, Leonhard 6s/3on/2g and Green 7s/3on/1g.
  
In the cage Green played extremely well and blocked a number of tough close range shots by the Patriot offense. Green recorded 13s/8ga (62%) for the Panthers (4-6). For Penfield Brady Del Pozzo was also a strong goalie finishing 11s/7ga (61%) for the Patriots (7-6).
  
Scoring for Penfield were Huntington (2g), Leonhard (2g), Vanthof (2g), Denhoff (1g), Green (1g), Nowak (1a), Roe (1a) and Dwyer (1a).
  
Scoring for Pittsford were Kist (3g-1a), Bridges (2g), McDermott (2g), Milano-Johnson (2a) and Leone (1a).
  
 Although Eastridge led after three quarters, Webster Thomas came back in the fourth quarters and goal by sophomore middie Pat Morrill at 0:19 sent the game into overtime where he scored again to give the Titans a 6-5 win at home.
  
In the defensive oriented game Eastridge scored the only goal in the first quarter. In the third quarter the Lancers scored three goals in a four minute period while the dealt with six of the twelve penalties assessed against them in the game. The Titan man down unit, however, held the Lancers to a single goal in man up. At the end other the third quarter, Eastridge was up 5-2.
  
Scoring for Thomas were Brendan Rothfuss (3g), Max Gurowski (1a), Jack Hinderland (1g), Dom Scalzo (1a) and Pat Morrill (2g). Kevin Ryan recorded 14s/5ga (73%) for the Titans (11-4).
  
Scoring for Eastridge were Brandon Moynihan (3g), Matt Driffill (1g-1a), Alex Austin (1g-1a), Kevin Mahler (2a). Eugene Fererra made 17s/6ga (74%) for the Lancers (9-5).
  
 This afternoon's game was a game of volume as Brighton took twice as many shots with twice as many on cage in their 5-1 victory over Aquinas. The Barons held on to their scoreless game into the fourth quarter.
  
Opening the scoring was Tim Williams (who finished 3g-1a) with a hard outside shot. That ended the first quarter 1-0. Continuing into the second quarter Brighton scored three goals. The first at 5:50 was scored unassisted by Justin Hillery (the only goal without Williams input) with a hard drive into the cage and an off-hip shot on Alan Antinarelli. The last two goals of the half were both unassisted goals by Williams. The first at 0:52 was scored on a drive down the right side and the second scored at the buzzer and was from a ground ball to a side-arm upper left corner rocket. The score was 4-0 at the half.
  
The Barons scored the lone goal of the third, their last goal, as Williams found Ryan Conti open on the crease at 8:43. The fourth quarter's goal was scored by freshman Austin Gorman (assisted by senior Nick Berkompas) who scored as a Brighton penalty was being released.

The shooting leaders for Brighton were Williams 7s/5on/3g, Conti 9s/5on/1g, and Hillery 9s/4on/1g. In total the Barons took 37s/19on/5g. For Aquinas freshman Gorman led with 5s/4on/1g with eighth grader CJ Wool 4s/2on and junior Alex Wood 3s/1on also contributing.
  
In the cage senior Noah Berg played strong with 9s/1ga (90%) for the Barons (5-9). While senior Alan Antinarelli recorded 14s/5ga (74%) for the Little Irish (7-8).
  
Scoring for Brighton were Williams (3g-1a), Hillery (1g) and Conti (1g).
  
Scoring for Aquinas were Gorman (1g) and Berkompas (1a).
  
 HF-L defeated Hilton 9-6 today at Honeoye Falls-Lima High School. HFL opened the scoring when Cade Norris found Matt Lesczinski open in front of the goal. Norris scored his own goal, as well as one from Zach Whyte, to end the first quarter 3-2.
  
Each team scored one goal in the second quarter. The three goals for the Cadets in the first half were scored by Kyle Hayward, Steve Bernsten and Colin Walker. The score was 4-3 at the half.
  
HF-L scored first again in the third quarter as Lesczynski scored his second goal (assisted again by Norris). Hilton fought back hard, but the Cougars did not give up. The Cadets scored two more goals in the fourth (Bernsten and Hayward) but it was not enough to stop the Cougars. HF-L's last goal was scored by Ian Griffin with only 0:05 remaining on the clock.
  
Scoring for HFL were Norris (1g-5a), Griffin (3g-1a), Whyte (3g-1a), Lesczynski (2g) and Kal Dachtler (1a). In the cage senior Pat Roache finished with 12s/6ga (66%) for the Cougars (3-10).
  
Scoring for Hilton were Hayward (2g-1a), James Moss (1g-2a), Bernsten (2g), Alex Wood (2a) and Walker (1g). Senior Aaron Donahey played the entire game finishing with 10s/9ga (53%) for the Cadets (8-7).
  
Churchville-Chili won their twelve game of the season with a 14-6 win over the Greece Lightning at Arcadia. Having set a team goal of recording an assist for every goal, the Saints fared well, going 9 of 14, including all of the first seven goals. Ground balls were frequent and the Saints led these 59-25. The riding team forced 10 of 26 failed clears while the clearing team went 26-5. C-C went 18-6 at the face off circle.
  
Scoring for the Saints were Ben Rossignolo (3g-2a), Jamie Englert (1g-3a), Gino Marcello (3g), Jon Hemink (2g), Cody Rumsey (1g-1a), Kevin Conway (1g-1a) while Doug Hemink, Matt Carey and Damien Pagano each added 1g. Assists were registered to Ryan Grogan and David Terrell. Adam DiFulvio made 2s/3ga and played for the first three quarters. Sean Kettles finished the game with 1s/3ga for the Saints (12-2). No report from Greece Ath/Ody.
  
  Brockport was a 16-0 winner over Batavia, whose goalie, Matt Landfried stopped 22 of 38 shots on goal. 
  
Scoring for Brockport were Adam Nauerth (4g-1a), Justin klymochko (4g), Sean Bittner (3g-4a), John Hopkins (2g-2a), Trevor Hayward (1g), Braden Flynn (1g), Tyler Sutphen (1g), Eric Gallert (2a), Kacie Jones (2a), Tucker English (1a) and Ryan Pratt (1a). Connor Mykins had 2 saves in 2 quarters. John Duthoy had no saves in 2 quarters.
  
 Gates Chili took a 6-1 first quarter lead and increased it to 14-3 at the half on their way to a 18-5 win over the Greece Thunder at Athena.
  
Scoring for the Spartans were Tom Elkins (3g-1a), Andy Hilton (3g-2a), Tom Sudek (1g-1a), Brad Weber (3g-1a), Jeff Fichtner (2g-2a), Pat Sposato (4g-2a), Mike Greene (1g-1a) and Jake Johnson (1g). Jason Baetzhold made 7s/5ga (58%) for Gates (9-5). No report from Ath/Ody.
