No More Undefeated Teams
May 1, 2007 - Fairport defeated the last of the undefeated teams this afternoon when the beat visiting Irondequoit, 8-7 in overtime. Rush-Henrietta had a 10-9 win over Penfield, Pittsford played a great game against Schroeder but lost 7-9. The Thunder won in the 2nd OT. A total of 13 games were scheduled on Thursday.
Fairport (5-4) scored the first three goals as well as the last three goals in their overtime win over previously undefeated Irondequoit (8-1). Underclassmen were the drive force for the Red Raiders as exemplary performances from freshman Brendan Saylor (4g) and sophomore goalkeeper Kristoffer Sterzin were instrumental in the victory.
Fairport's Eric Martin began the scoring at 8:44 with a straight drive to the goal. Martin assisted on the next goal, in man-up, scored by Mike Danylyshyn. The third goal for Fairport was by Aaron Jones (assisted by Shawn Runyon) who scored on a cross-crease open goal. Irondequoit scored the final goal of the first quarter with 1:48 remaining when Greg Wright scored (assisted by Drew Coholan).
Irondequoit outscored Fairport 2-1 in the second quarter scoring the first and last goal of the quarter. At 9:49 Coholan found the back of the net after a drive from behind. Six minutes later Fairport scored when, after a clear, Danylyshyn shot the ball, missing wide to the right, where Runyon was able to pick up a quick ground ball. Runyon then drove into the call causing a defensive slide which left Saylor wide open on the crease for his first goal of the game. Saylor led all scorers with four goals. Only 0:29 seconds later Mike Wallenhorst scored on a bounce shot that landed over Sterzin's left shoulder. The score at the half was 4-3 Fairport.
The third quarter was all Eagles as they outscored Fairport 4-1. Each of the Irondequoit goals was scored by a different player. The first goal, only 0:53 seconds into the quarter (and to tie the game) was scored from a one-on-one drive by Nick Kane. Kane took a total of 10shts/6on/1g. Seven shots came before he scored and only two after. Six minutes later the second goal of the quarter was scored as Andrew Hart drove from behind the cage. The Eagles scored their next goal on a fast-break as Wright fed Todd Laemlein on the crease. The fast break began with a take by Jimmy Walsh, Irondequoit's junior defenseman. Fairport was forced to call a time-out to slow down the Eagles offense. On the ensuing face-off the Red Raiders scored on a fast-break taking only 0:13 seconds as Jones fed Saylor for his second goal of the contest. The final goal of the quarter, and final Irondequoit goal, was scored by Dan Utz from a bounce shot that found its way around Sterzin. Fairport had a quick fast-break with 2:00 remaining but it was quickly stopped as Sean Davern intercepted the pass. The rest of the quarter was back and forth play but with no serious plays at the goal. The quarter ended with Irondequoit leading 7-5.
Fairport scored the only two goals of the fourth quarter to tie up the game. The goals were scored within 0:45 seconds of each other. With 7:45 remaining, John McDonnell shot and missed the cage, causing Saylor to pick up the ground ball and drive from behind to score his third goal. The tying goal occurred at 7:06 as Tom Rynn fired a rocket high on Zach Nash (assisted by Runyon). The game remained tied for the rest of the game, but the end was far from the passive at the end of the third. With 2:10 remaining Wallenhorst took a close range shot which was blocked by Sterzin but with 1:30 remaining Irondequoit had regained control of the ball but after a bad pass lost possession. On the clear the Eagles were offsides (which was assessed at 1:07). The Red Raiders could not get off a shot during the penalty. The ball was sent out of bounds at 0:08, but after a lose-ball push call, the ball remained with Fairport. Coach Mike Torrelli called a time-out. With 0:04 remaining Ian Nash stripped the ball and sent the game into overtime.
The overtime face-off was won by Wallenhorst, over Eric Hislop. Sterzin played the game of his season during overtime stopping two point blank shots at 2:16 (high and off stick) and 0:31 low and off his leg. Fairport's only shot was the goal with 0:12 remaining as Martin found a wide open Saylor sitting on the right side crease.
Sterzin ended the game with 12s/7ga (63%) but the numbers do not indicate the quality of difficult saves that he faced. Zach Nash ended with a respectable 8s/8ga (50%).
Scoring for Fairport were Saylor (4g), Martin (1g-2a), Runyon (3a), Jones (1g-1a), Rynn (1g) and Danylyshyn (1g). Fairport have their rematch against Webster Schroeder on Thursday, the first game of the season for the both the Red Raiders and the Warriors ended in overtime with Schroeder the 13-12 victor.
Scoring for Irondequoit were Wright and Coholan (1g-1a) and with one goal each, Wallenhorst, Kane, Hart, Laemlein and Utz. Irondequoit plays Penfield on Thursday.
Penn Yan defeated Pal-Mac this afternoon in a Finger Lakes cross-over game 16-2. The Mustangs led 7-2 at the half.
Senior Jonathon Reeve recorded 9s/16ga (36%) while R.J. Wickham recorded 6s/2ga (75%) over two and a half quarters and Adam Galusha recorded 2s over the remaining quarter and a half.
Scoring for Penn Yan were Adam Trombley (4g-6a), Matt Osgood (2g-4a), Cole Castle (5g), Michael Manley (1g-3a), Ryan Cook (1g-1a), Josh Perrault (1a) and Dana Wilber (1a).
Scoring for Pal-Mac was Steve VanDeWalle (2g).
The game started with a moment of silence in remembrance of Jeff Milano-Johnson whose number (#23) appeared on Pittsford helmets and on the game field. Although the Panthers came out strong and led for much of the game, it was Webster Schroeder, in the end, with a 9-7 victory at Pittsford.
Conor McDermott scored first with an unassisted goal for Pittsford at 11:01. Senior middie Brett Bridges added a second goal for Pittsford at 7:27, but Schroeder returned with a goal by Mike Tota with an assist from Mike Barilla. McDermott finished the first quarter scoring with an unassisted goal at 0:16 and the quarter ended with Pittsford up 3-1.
After several minutes of transition play, Tota scored with an assist by Grant Catalino at 7:52 to bring the Warriors to within one. Cam Edmiston scored an unassisted goal at 4:25 and just before the end of the half, ate Powe gave Schroeder a goal (wassisted by Nick Mooney). The half ended with Pittsford up 4-3.
Pittsford took off after the halftime break, scoring three goals in a row. Edmiston's unassisted goal started things off at 11:01. McDermott (unassisted) was second and Chris Kist finished with an assist by Doug Milano-Johnson at 3:30. Although Pittsford was ahead 7-3, it was the last goal they scored in the game. Tota ended the third quarter with an assist from Catalino at 0:41 and started a run of six straight goals for the Warriors.
Catalino, a top player in the Section, figured in five of the six goals giving the Warriors the win. He scored the first, three, fourth and fifth goal of the quarter.Austin Orsini assisted on one and he scored the second goal with an assist from Drew Palmer.
Scoring for Schroeder were Catalino (4g-2a), Tota (3g), Powe (1g), Orsini (1g-1a), Brilla (1a), Mooney (1a) and Palmer (1a). Zach Marshall had 6s/7ga for Schroeder (9-1).
Scoring for Pittsford were McDermott (3g), Bridges (1g), Edmiston (2g), Kist (1g-1a) and Doug Milano-Johnson (1a). Brendan Green had 15s/9ga (63%) for the Panthers (2-3).
Canandaigua defeated Newark in a Finger Lakes cross-over game 17-1. Newark scored their lone goal in the third quarter. Canandaigua led 9-0 after one quarter and 10-0 at the half.
In the cage Scott Bement played the first six minutes making 1s and Kyle Carson played the remaining time recording 5s/1ga (83%). Michael Bogan and Robert Hartman split time in the net for Newark (Bogan 7s/10ga (41%) and Hartman 6s/7ga (46%).

Victor defeated Waterloo in another Finger Lakes cross-over game 17-5. Victor led after the first quarter 2-1. The second and third were all Victor leading 11-1 combined.
Victor led in all major categories 43-30 in ground balls, 40-21 in shots and 16/26 in face-offs.
Scoring for Victor were Frank Valenti (4g-1a), Andy Savage (3g-1a), Eric Willman (2g), Brian Chapman (2g), Alex Rogemoser (2g), Jason Houtenbrink (1g-1a), Ethan Payne (1g-1a), Steven Hearn (1g), Ryan O'Connor (1g), Joe Coleman (1a) and Kurt Sullivan (1a). Mitchell Liegerot and Cody Bennett split time in the cage. Liegerot ended 5s/1ga (86%) while Bennett was 5s/4ga (56%).
Scoring for Waterloo were Mike Ruiz IV (3g), Josh Mateo (1g) and Nelson Boyd (1g). Junior Shawn Andrus ended with 10s/17ga (37%).
For the second time this year the Thunder played a double over time game against the Spencerport Rangers, but this time the win went to the Greece Thunder. Spencerport started strong and went into the half leading 6 to 3. Later in the game, Phil Rodriguez tied the score, as he hit the tenth goal for the Thunder with 7 minutes left in the game. The Thunder dominated the second half scoring 8 goals and taking the lead in the fourth with 5 minutes left.
Spencerport scored a minute later making the score 11 to 11 and the game was sent into overtime. With less then two minutes to play in the second over time middie Phil Rodriguez fed a cutting Nick Ryan for the 12 to11 Thunder win. Goalie Dave Tarana saved four point blank shots late in the game and had 15 saves for the Thunder.

Rush-Henrietta got on the scoreboard first with a goal at 6:21 of the first quarter when junior attackman Nate Delone scored (unassisted) to give the Royal Comets the 1-0 lead. Penfield evened the score at 1-1 when Dan Huntington scored with an assist from Kevin Roe at 3:59. RH answered at 2:48 when Colin Cornaire scored (unassisted) to regain the lead at 2-1. Penfield tied the score at 2-2 when James Dwyer scored at 1:57 with an assist from Kyle VanThof. The first quarter ended at 2-2.
RH reclaimed the lead at 9:56 of the second quarter when senior middie Justin Rose scored an unassisted goal. Penfield knotted it up at 3-3 with Kyle Denhoff scored at 3:00 with an assist from Kevin Green. Halftime score was 3-3.
RH opened up a string of five straight goals starting the 3rd quarter when Rose scored his second at 11:29 (unassisted). Also scoring in the third for RH were Colin Cornaire who at 9:58 with an assist from Nate Delone and Delone at 6:10 (unassisted) which increased the Royal Comet lead to 6-3.
Junior attackman Bobby Pattridge scored at 1:49 to push the lead to 7-3 with the assist from Cornaire. Long stick midfielder Jake Messimer ended the scoring in the third at 1:20 scoring his second goal of the year. The quarter ended with RH up 8-3.
RH continued scoring into the fourth when Rose scored (unassisted) at 11:40. Penfield went on to score the next six goals to even the score at 9-9 with 3:18 remaining in the game. Scoring in the run for Penfield were senior middie Paul Leonard with two, James Dwyer who added his second and third of the game and senior attackman Kevin Green who added two.
Penfield was called for a penalty with three minutes remaining and Hantzis netted the game winner at 2:50 with an assist from Matt Moran.
Scoring for Rush-Henrietta were Justin Rose (3g), Nate Delone (2g-1a), Colin Cornaire (2g-1a), Brian Hantzis (1g), Bobby Pattridge (1g), Jake Messimer (1g) and Matt Moran (1a ). Matt McShea recorded 22 Saves/9ga (71%) for the Royal Comets who improve to 4-4.
Scoring for Penfield were James Dwyer (3g), Kevin Green (2g-1a), Kyle VanThof (3a and 16 for 22 on face-offs), Paul Leonhard (2g), Dan Huntington (1g-1a), Kevin Roe (2a) and Kyle Denhoff (1g). Brady Del Pozzo had 6s/10ga.
Midlakes took a 3-2 led in the first all the way to a 14-5 victory over Haverling in the only non-league game of the night. Midlakes increased their lead to 9-4 at the half and 13-4 after three quarters.
In the cage junior Jared Schoonerman, of Midlakes, recorded 10s/5ga (66%) while sophomore Chris Wolfer finished at 14s/5ga (74%).

Opening their Stadium field tonight, Churchville-Chili had an 11-7 victory over a determined Gates Chili team.

Geneva defeated Mynderse today 19-0. Geneva out shot Mynderse 35-7 and won the ground ball tally 60-23. The Panthers also won 16/19 (84%) at face-off.
