West Genesee in a Close One

- Inside Lacrosse has West Genesee in the number one spot in the National High School Poll but Penn Yan played a close game and, in fact was down 6-5 with just over 4:00 left in the game.

New York's top Class A team traveled to Penn Yan to play the Class C Mustangs on their new turf field and the fans that filled the stands to watch the early season game were not disappointed.

The Wildcats scored first, just 48 seconds into the game as junior midfielder Adam Mazzoni scored in man up on a feed from sophomore attackman Collin Donahue. The Mustangs came back at 9:51 when Dan Mesler drove to the cage for the first of his three goals of the night. Sophomore middie Luke Cometti scored for the Cats at 6:45 on a drive to the goal. Senior midfielder Kevin Courtney was injured with a little over one minute left in the quarter. The apparent ankle roll kept him sidelined for the rest of the game. The quarter ended with the Wildcats up 2-1.

Although junior goalie, RJ Wickham had a slow start in the first quarter, making only one save, he dramatically improved in the second quarter and played a terrific game thereafter, making a total of 13 saves in the game, but several at key, momentum breaking moments.

Penn Yan scored first in the second quarter, tying the game at 8:10 when Mesler made the same cut as his first goal and hit the back of the net (unassisted). The lead was short lived as West Genesee returned with two man up goals at 7:35 (Junior attackman Brian Donahue) and at 6:14 (senior attackman Chris Schmidt from sophomore attackman Ryan Barber). Penn Yan's senior attackman Dan McGuffie scored (unassisted) on a diving shot after taking a hard check from the defense at 4:11 The Wildcats scored with two seconds left when junior middie Jeremy Piochko hit the nets on a cross goal feed from Mazzoni and the half ended with the Wildcats up 5-3.

The third quarter was full of transition and defense was the name of the game. Each team scored a goal with Penn Yan first, bringing the Mustangs within one again at the 5:55 mark on a score by junior defenseman Mike Manley who cleared the ball and took it straight to the goal. Manley was remarkable throughout the game, recording at least seven one-on-one take aways against six different West Genesee players. The Wildcats scored at 4:02 as Cometti scored another unassisted goal on a drive from the front and the third quarter ended with the Cats up 6-4.

The last quarter was very much like the third, with lots of great defense and each team trading goals. Penn Yan brought the game to within one again at 6:30 with Mesler scored in man up (unassisted). The Mustang fans were brought to their feet as they began to hope that a tying goal was possible. West Genesee quieted them down a bit when Donahue scored on a pass from junior attackman Kevin Wadach at 3:00. Although the Mustangs were man up with a little over a minute left, they were unable to keep control and the Wildcats took possession with 0:30 left in the game.

For an early season game, this was an exceptional one. Although the Wildcats moved the ball quickly they were not as sharp as they were at the end of last season, dropping balls and throwing them out of bounds. This will undoubtedly change in the next few weeks. Penn Yan lost three goals in man down and had far too many shots directly into West Genesee's junior goalie John Galloway's stick. Galloway recorded 15 saves and made beautiful outlet pass clears on many of them.

In the end, West Genesee had the win, but Penn Yan played very well in their first game of the year and proved they could play with the big boys this season.

reddot It was host Midlakes over Haverling 6-2. Senior attackman Jon Briggs ended the game with 3g-2a, while junior attackman Glen Stevenson, senior middies Nate Stevens and Ricky Dawley each added one for the Eagles. Sophomore goalie Jared Schoonerman recorded 3 saves in the cage.

reddot Canandaigua was the 10-3 winner against McQuaid Jesuit in the game played at McAvoy Park tonight. The Braves dominated throughout the game as they out shot the Knights 49-15, and won 13 of 15 faceoffs.
