Tuesday: Semi Finals

May 24, 2005 - Penn Yan and Honeoye Falls-Lima are going to the New York State Tournament as a result of tonight's wins in the semi final round at Irondequoit. Penn Yan earned the trip with a 12-6 win over #2 seeded Waterloo and HF-L earned their first trip to the States with a 13-7 win over Geneva. In the Class A semi finals, the top two seeds won as Penfield defeated Schroeder 15-9 and Canandaigua won their game over Fairport 9-5.
  
 Although Schroeder scored the first goal of the game, it was Penfield dominating the first half with a 5-1 first quarter and 11-3 half before winning 15-9 in the Class A semi final game at Aquinas. Senior midfielder Mike Thon was nearly unstoppable as he scored seven goals and assisted on two others. Junior goalie Brian Dell made 14 saves, a number of which were one-on-ones from short range.
  
Tom Costanza scored the first goal of the game for Schroeder on a feed from Mike Catalino at 10:07. That would be on only goal of the quarter for Schroeder as Penfield scored the next five goals. Tim Pfeffer scored at 4:45 (assisted by Thon) and scored again at 4:16 (assisted by Paul Leonhard). Thon scored at 3:43 (assisted by Trevor Rice) and Jason Knerr scored on a feed from Thon. Kelly McKenna scored the last goal of the quarter at 1:15 on an assist from Mike Arvan.
  
Penfield scored first at the top of the second quarter when Pfeffer scored at 11:06. Schroeder came back at 10:10 with a goal by Catalino and the Patriots returned with two more goals by Thon (unassisted) at 9:02 and 6:06 before the Warriors struck with goal by Chris Ferry assisted by Tom Costanza at 5:14. McKenna scored two more for the Patriots, the second assisted by Arvan and Thon ended the half with an unassisted goal with 0:07 left. The Patriots led at the half 11-3.
  
Once again Webster scored first at the top of the second half when Grant Catalino scored at 6:30 on a pass from Jay Willmes. Thon came back on the ensuing face off and scored an unassisted goal just seven seconds later. Knerr scored again at 5:52 and Schroeder then saw a goal from Grant Catalino at 2:07. Thon ended the third quarter with an unassisted goal with just over one minute left. The third quarter ended with the Patriots up 14-5.
  
Schroeder mounted a small comeback in the last quarter, scoring four goals to Penfield's one. Ferry scored at 10:08 and a little less than five minutes later, Willmes scored on a pass from Tom Costanza. Mike Catalino scored an unassisted goal at 4:54 and Tom Costanza scored the last goal of the season for the Warriors at 1:57 on an assist from Mike Catalino. Penfield's Knerr scored their last goal of the game at 1:34 as he scored on a feed from Luke Prattico. The win continues Penfield's undefeated season (18-0). They will play for the Championship on Friday night at 7:15 when they face Canandaigua. The winner of that game will present Section Five in the NYS Class A tournament which will start on Tuesday at Aquinas.
  
 The second Class A semi final game saw Canandaigua come from behind to win 9-5 over a strong willed and fired up Fairport. The Red Raiders scored the first three goals of the game and held the powerful Braves scoreless in the first quarter and nearly halfway through the second. Once the Braves started their offense they became difficult to contain and after scoring the tying goal just before the half, outscored Fairport 5-1 in the second half for the win.
  
Junior midfielder Ryan Lowe scored first for Fairport at the 4:21 mark, bringing the Red Raider fans to their feet. Mike Danylyshyn scored a little less than a minute later when he intercepted a Canandaigua clearing pass and scored on the open net. The Red Raiders led at the end of the first quarter, 2-0.
  
Fairport extended their lead to 3-0 when Pat Reilly scored an unassisted goal at 11:36. Canandaigua scored their first goal at 5:10 when Tyler Emery scored on a pass from Brain Hadsell. The Raiders came right back and scored at 4:06 when Danylyshyn scored, assisted by Lowe. The Braves then scored then next three, to tie the game at four to end the half. Emery scored an unassisted goal at 3:42 and Aaron Manzer scored two goals in a row, both assisted by Dan Groot, the first at 0:33 and the second at 0:17.
  
Canandaigua scored the only goals of the third quarter. Groot scored an unassisted goal at 11:43 and Manzer scored a goal at 1:32 on a feed from Chris Mulheron. The Braves led after three quarters, 6-4.
  
The Braves extended their lead after scoring the first two goals in the last quarter. Hadsell scored on a feed from Mulheron at 10:17 and 12 seconds later, Manzer scored (assisted by Emery). Reilly scored the last goal of Fairport's season (unassisted) at 5:39. Mulheron came back on the faceoff scoring on a feed from Groot.
  
Scoring for Canandaigua were Manzer (4g), Emery (2g-1a), Groot (1g-3a), Mulheron (1g-2a) and Hadsell (1g-1a). Dan Serafine made 7 saves for the Braves who will play Penfield for the Class A Championship on Friday night at Aquinas.
  
Scoring for Fairport were Lowe with 1g-1a and Danylyshyn and Reilly with 2g each.
 
 Waterloo scored the first three goals, but Penn Yan came back with three to tie at the end of the first quarter and then added five more for an 8-5 halftime lead before winning a place in the New York State Class C Tournament by beating Waterloo 12-6.
  
Scoring for Penn Yan were Dan Mesler (5g), Jon Van Houten (2g), Steven Carlson (2g), Dan McGuffie (3g-1a) while Michael Manley and Mark Kratochvil each added 1a for the Mustangs who will play HF-L on Friday (5:00) at Aquinas for the Section Five B/C Championship.
  
Waterloo saw two goals each from Jason Johnson, Winston Boyd, TJ Radka while Gordy Lahr added an assist.
 
 Honeoye Falls-Lima was the winner over Geneva, 13-7 and will represent Section Five in the New York State Class B Tournament. After a 2-2 tie at the end of the first quarter the Panthers led 6-3 at the half time break. The Cougars came back strong in the third, scoring 8 goals while holding Geneva to 1 to take the 11-7 lead after three.
  
Scoring for the Cougars were Mike Cintineo (5g-4a), Jeff Price (3g-2a), David Uzialko (3g-1a) and Connor Burgasser (2g-2a) while John Cintineo added 2a and Cade Norris added 1a. Mike Brisbane had 14 saves for HF-L. No report from Geneva.
