Preseason 2005: RH, Spencer, Thom, Wat

RUSH-HENRIETTA

Rush-Henrietta went 0-10 against Monroe County-1 competition but finished 4-14 over all.

Seeded 9th in the Class A Tournament, the Royal Comets beat McQuaid Jesuit 7-5 before losing to undefeated Canandaigua in the quarter finals.

Senior midfielder, Joe Malach and senior defenseman, Rafe Mattingly received 1st team All League honors in MC-1 and Malach was named an Academic All American.

R-H lost nine seniors to graduation in 2004 including both Malach (UMBC) and Mattingly (Hobart) along with attackman Tyler Allen and midfielder Joe Moore (Alfred State).

Rush-Henrietta had a tough season last year even with two outstanding players in Malach and Mattingly. They appear to have some good players in each of the positions and will need to get the most out of each them as they once again compete in the MC-1 division.

Brian McShea will return in attack and John Gause and Phil Gordon return to the midfield. AJ LaLonde returns for the Royal Comets in the defense and James Lally is back in the goal. The seniors will be joined by newcomers Tony Henriquez, Justin Rose and Tim Barth in the midfield and Matt Moran and Brian Hantzis in attack. Hantzis was a high scoring player on the JV unit last year.
   

SPENCERPORT

This is the first Varsity season for Spencerport, and Head Coach Jerry Dawes has been working with the players since he started the modified team in 2002. Coach Dawes played for Fairport and attended SUNY Cortland. Last year, as a JV team, the Rangers went 14-2. Coach Dawes expects to see juniors Rob Stojanov in the attack, Cameran Stormo in defense, Mike Hicks in the midfield and Ryan Kunko in the goal. Senior Mark Hosey will compete as a long stick middie.
   

WEBSTER THOMAS

Thomas tied with Brighton for second in the Monroe County-2 league with a record of 7-3 and finished the year at 11-7 over all.

The Titans were seeded 7th in the Class A tournament and after winning against number 10 seed, Hilton (14-8), lost to Penfield 18-7 in the quarter finals .

Seniors Steve Hutton (mid) and Tyler VanCura (def) were joined by junior Marc Schuber (def) and sophomore, Kevin Kemp (att) on the Monroe County-2 All League list.

Fourteen seniors were graduated in 2004, including Hutton and VanCura (Ithaca) as well as goalie, John Concordia (FLCC), and defenseman, Matt Frank (FLCC).

Thomas lost some key players to graduation but have senior defensemen Mark Schuber, Matt Kemp and AJ Laffin back in the defense. The Titans will need to replace Concordia in the cage, but will have Kevin Kemp (att) and Dom Scalzo (a/m) back on the offensive side of the field. Coach Ruller has brought up six sophomores and the team will be young. Thomas will have some difficulty this year adapting to the rigors of MC-1 competition. Last year their MC-2 schedule included a large number of new or young teams, but this year they will face home and away games with the large schools after being "reassigned" to the MC-1 division.
   

WATERLOO

Waterloo took top honors in Finger Lakes-2 with a 4-0 record (13-5 overall).

Seeded second in the Class C Tournament, the Indians posted a 12-0 win over Pal-Mac before losing to Geneva (#3) in the semi finals.

Senior attackman Mike Strohm and senior defenseman Pete Wadhams received 1st team All league honors in the Finger Lakes league.

Waterloo lost six seniors to graduation including Strohm (Oswego), Wadhams, defenseman Jeff Sutliffe (FLCC) and Nate Boyd (FLCC).
