Preseason Report: Irond, Fpt and Schroeder

March 23, 2005 - IRONDEQUOIT

Last year Irondequoit tied with Fairport for the number 2 spot in the Monroe County-1 league with a 7-3 league record and at 12-5 over all.

Seeded 3rd in the Class A tournament, the Eagles lost in overtime (10-9) to Penfield in the semifinals and junior midfielder, Cory Bottiglier was named to the All Tournament Team.

The Eagles were third in offense (9.9 goals/games) in Section Five and second in defense, allowing only 9.8 goals per game.

Nine players graduated including four first team all-league players. Gone are Craig Lepiane (mid) (MCC), Jon Timkey (att), John Hanss (def) and goalie, Bill Buttaro. Also gone is 2nd team attackman, Jim Mikel (Siena).

Buttaro will be hard to replace in the goal, but no less than three players are competing for the spot. Seniors Curt Boshnater and Dylan Crary or sophomore Zack Nash will win the position or a perhaps Coach Pratt will use some combination of the three. Certainly Timkey and Mikel will be missed in the attack but expect Derek Pino to be strong and newcomers Joe Parker and Andrew Hart will be trying to earn starting positions.

Although the attack and goal may take some tweaking, there is great depth and experience in the midfield and defense. Senior midfielders Sean Doyle, Zack Pixley and Cory Bottiglier will be joined by juniors Mickey Haight and Aaron Bottazzo (who may also play in attack) and they will be formidable on both ends of the field.

In the defense, seniors Dan Nielsen, Kyle Byron and Dave Wesolowski return with defensive middies,
Jake Schindler, Nick Kane and Joe Mason. Newcomers Kyle Sarbou and Ryan Cordero will add depth to the defense.

Don't count Irondequoit out in any game this year. They are an intense group with a strong tradition and are capable of great moments.
  

FAIRPORT

Fairport tied Irondequoit for the number 2 spot in the Monroe County-1 league with a 7-3 record and ended 2004 with a 10-8 record.

The Red Raiders were seeded number five in the Class A tournament and beat Pittsford 11-6 in the quarter finals before loosing to Canandaigua 10-4 in the semi finals. Senior defenseman, Shawn McLaughlin received All Tournament Team honors and he and senior attackman, Pat Van Hall were selected to the all league team.

The Raiders lost 11 players to graduation including Van Hall (Marist) and McLaughlin. Also lost were attackmen William Durdell and Nicholas Bryan (Potsdam) and goalie, Sean Miller (Geneseo).

This year's squad will be young with only eight seniors on the team of thirty-four. In the attack, junior Pat Reilly and sophomore Mike Danylyshyn return and may be joined by junior newcomers Gary Baier and Pete Burkhartt.

Midfield has the greatest depth for the Red Raiders with senior Chris Lindner, juniors Ryan Lowe, Jake Fricano, Brian Sanna, and Jeff Sanna and sophomore Tom Rynn returning.

Senior Steve Hislop and junior Geoff Cook return in defense and may be joined by sophomore Brent Jacobs.

Regardless of age, second year Head Coach, Mike Torrelli has selected some tough out of league games including defending the Class A Champions from Orchard Park (Section Six) and the Class B Champions from Corning East (Section 4). Add to these, tough games with Penn Yan and Canandaigua and the Red Raiders will be challenged. The quality of these opponents along with a very difficult MC-1 league schedule will keep Fairport on their toes and may help to prepare them for the rigors of the sectional tournament.
 

SCHROEDER

Webster Schroeder posted a 3-7 league record in the Monroe County-1 league and finished the season 8-9 overall.

In the Class A Tournament, the Warriors were seeded 6th and lost to Irondequoit (#3) in the quarter final round. Junior midfielder Mike Catalino was selected to the 1st team All league list.

Schroeder lost only three senior in 2004 including defenseman Tim Baran (Fisher), midfielder Chris Costanza and defenseman Brett Lenzi.

Schroeder has only twenty-two players on the roster this season. Standout midfielder Mike Catalino who signed early with Duke will lead the midfield and may see time with junior Jay Willmes and sophomore Mike Barilla if the two newcomers make the starting lineup. The attack will see Jack Mooney and Tom Costanza back this year. In defense Matt Crandall (early decision to LeMoyne) and Mark Liberti return. If the Warriors stay healthy they have some players who can make some dramatic plays.
