Tuesday: Out Brackets and Quarters
May 18, 2004 - Rush-Henrietta (#9) won its first sectional game in many years as they beat host McQuaid Jesuit (#8) 7-5 behind the efforts of senior middie, Joe Malach (2g-2a) and senior attackman, Tyler Allen (2g). In the game that featured strong defensive play by both teams, the Royal Comets took a 6-1 lead into the half. Junior goalie, James Lally recorded 16 saves for R-H.
Junior middie, Scott Rubino scored 2g-1a for McQuaid Jesuit. Scott Rubino (2g-1a), Brandon McKay (2a), Kevin Dacey (1g-1a), Matt Evans (1g) and Ryan Ingalls (1g) also scored for the Knights. David Yahoodik recorded 11 Saves. R-H will face Canandaigua in the Class A Quarter Finals on Thursday.
With thick rain clouds above and an intense atmosphere around the stadium. The Thomas Titans prepared for their first Sectional Win at home.
Thomas came out focused knowing that in order to win they would have to stop Hilton middie Tyler Andres and for the first quarter they met the goal. Thomas took an early 4-0 lead with goals from midfielder, Steve Hutton (4g-1a) and Kevin Kemp (1g-4a) and then sophomore middie Andy Episcapo and freshman attackman, Dom Scalzo. The Titans led, 4-0 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter it was Hilton on the scoreboard. Junior goalie, Dom Collichio (17s) was outstanding for Hilton and his efforts in the goal sparked the offense. He was supported by senior midfielder, Tyler Andres (3g-3a) who was involved in all three of Hilton's goals in the second quarter. Also scoring was attackman Ryan Eastman (1g-1a). Scoring for Thomas was senior attackman, John Schumacher, senior midfielder, Steve Hutton, senior midfielder, Chris Callahan, and Scalzo again.
Thomas entered the second half up 8-3. Hilton took advantage of some costly turnovers in the third and they ended up outscoring the Titans 2-1 in the third quarter. Scoring for Hilton was eighth grader, Mitch Ritchie (3g) on both goals with one assisted by Andres the other by Eastman. Scoring for Thomas was Schumacher early in the Third.
In the fourth quarter Thomas outscored Hilton 4 to 3. Hutton ended up with 4g- 1a and Schumacher had 3g-3a. Hilton finished up strong, scoring 3 out of the last 4 goals in the game including one by Chris Ciaccia. Thomas will face Penfield (#2) on Thursday.
Penn Yan, seeded first in the Class C tournament had no difficulty in their 20-1 win over #8 Greece Odyssey at Penn Yan. Kyle Eakins (1g-7a), Dan Messler (5g), Steve Carlson (3g) and Dan McGuffie (3g-1a) led the Mustang pack of eight different players scoring goals. Penn Yan plays Livonia Thursday in the semifinals at 5:00 at Hobart.
Brighton scored the first 4 goals, but Newark came back with 3 to end the first quarter, 4-3. The Barons led at the half, 9-6 but Newark came out strong at the top of the third with 4 goals to to take a 10-9 lead but Brighton came back to end the third, up 12-11. Both teams added 2g in the last quarter and Brighton won, 14-13. Mike Ryerson scored 6g and James Ryan (3g-4a) and Zack Davis (3g-1a) each added three goals for the Barons.
Mychal Wilkes scored 4g-5a and Nate Colon added 5g for Newark. Brighton will face top seed, HFL at McQuaid Jesuit on Thursday (5:00 pm).
It was all Waterloo as they earned the shutout, 12-0 against Pal-Mac in the quarterfinals of the Class C tournament. Waterloo scored 4g in the first half and 8 in the second. Dave Osborne led the winners with 5g-1a. Mike Strohm (2g-1a) and Andy Bennett (2g) each added two goals and Nate Boyd (1g 2a), TJ Radka (1g) and Shawn Dumphy (1g) each added a goal for Waterloo.
Pal-Mac goalie, Ben Dlugosh (24s), finished an impressive season with an all-star performance in the goal. Junior defenseman, Josh Polle and junior middie, Jason Oaks played strong defensive games for Pal-Mac. Waterloo will face Geneva (#3) in the second game (7:15) at Hobart on Thursday.
Geneva was the big winner, 16-2 over Haverling-Haverling in the Class C quarter finals. The Panthers took an 11-2 lead at the half and held Haverling scoreless in the second half. Ten different players scored for Geneva, led by Luke Bonney (4g-2a) and Dan Rago (3g). Matt Warner (2g-2a), Carson Poole (2g) and Mark Bloom (2g-1a) each added two goals. Greg Bonney (1g-3a), Jake Queener (1g) and Henry Heaton each scored a goal while Andrew Shamy (1a) and Brian Knecht (2a) added assists for Geneva. Nick Sharman and Matt Hannan combined for 7 saves for the Panthers.
Liam Glover (1g-1a) and Jeremy Sutfin (1g) scored for Haverling while goalie, Dusty Smith recorded 15 saves.
