Class D State Title - CBA over Westlake

- The Christian Brothers Academy took an early three goal lead and never trailed in their 12-5 win over Westlake to secure their first ever State Title and the first ever Class D Title.  The Brother’s Alex Calkins led the scoring list with 4g-1a and was named the tournament offensive MVP.  Defensive Player of the tournament was awarded to Peyton Bowler.  Although Westlake fought back hard in the first quarter, the Brothers continued their pressure and increased their lead all the way through the final quarter. 

cba vs westlakeCBA scored the first three goals of the game beginning with Calkins scoring unassisted from the crease off a feed from Patrick O’Brien.  Just over a minute later, Ben McCreary scored on a sweep across the top of the restraining line.  The third goal was another drive from the top with Calkins scoring unassisted.  Westlake scored their first goal with Kyle Donnery scoring from the left flat off a feed from Rob DiNoto.  The Brothers came back with their fourth goal, an outside shot from Michael Matheson with 5:35 remaining on the clock.  The Brothers led 4-1.  The Wildcats scored the final two goals of the quarter to bring the game within one.  Gorman scored with a drive from the right wing and DiNoto scored with an outside shot.  After 12 minutes, the Brothers led 4-3.

<cba vs westlakeIn the second quarter, CBA held Westlake scoreless and added three of their own to extend their lead.  Calkins scored unassisted on a fast-break with 10:24 remaining. The score remained 5-3 for another 8 minutes before CBA scored their second with 1:39 left.  McCreary scored with an inside dodge from the right flat.  With 0:01 remaining in the first half, Calkins fed the ball across the crease to O’Brien.  CBA led 7-3 at the half.

In the third quarter, Westlake added the only goal.  Augustus Bonacci scored with inside dodge along the crease with 7:21 remaining.  In the fourth quarter, CBA scored the first four goals of the quarter to secure their win.  Bonacci scored his first goal on a fast-break when man-down.  O’Brien scored his second off a feed from behind the net by Matheson.  Ryan MacKenzie scored with an outside shot and Calkins scored another fast-break goal.  With 4:13 remaining, the Wildcats scored their final goal.  Gorman fed DiNoto who finished with an outside shot.  The final goal of the game was scored with a cross crease pass from Matheson to Bonacci.  In the cage for CBA, Nicholas Papaleo recorded 5s/5ga.  For Westlake, Nick Ryan finished with 6s/12ga.
