Fairport Returns to Finals After 2 Year Absence

-  SPORTSFIVE REPORT:  Second seeded Fairport came to play and defeated Penfield 13-9.  The Red Raiders scored the first four goals and held Penfield scoreless into the second quarter.  The Patriots fought back hard for the entirety of the game, but never got closer than 2 goals.  Fairport was led in scoring by TJ Hendricks with 4g-2a.  Jake Bucci (4g-1a) and Spencer Bell (3g-1a) also added significant scoring for the Red Raiders.  Fairport advances to the Finals for the sixth time in nine years (3 wins in 2014, 2012, 2010 and 2 losses in 2011 and 2009).  They have not reached the finals since their win over Pittsford in 2014.

Fairport started off strong with four goals to open the first quarter.  Hendricks scored the first goal with a straight dodge to the cage.  Just under 2 minutes later, they extended their lead with a cross-crease feed from Hendricks to Bucci during man-up.  The third goal was one of the most impressive of the game.  Off a broken-clear the Red Raiders pushed the ball back up the field.  The made multiple quick passes and Bell crossed the crease to Mitchell DiSanto for the goal.  Kyle McAvoy scored the fourth with an outside shot to finish up the first quarter.

Penfield scored the first goal of the second quarter with a fast-break goal from Jason Beraridicuti.  Bucci responded with back to back goals.  The first was an inside feed where Bucci dodged to the crease and the second was a quick-stick shot off a feed from Hendricks.  Fairport led 6-1 with 4:18 remaining in the half.  Penfield scored the next three goals within 2 minutes.  Jack Cummings scored off a pass from Dan Taddeo.  Taddeo intended to feed the crease, but the pass was missed; Cummings grabbed it out of the air and finished into the back of the net.  The second and third were scored by Peter Schwab.  He scored the first during a double man-up situation off an outside shot.  The latter goal was a fast-break goal where he picked up the groundball near the midfield line and drove straight to the cage.  With 0:49 remaining in the half, Penfield had but the lead to 6-4.  Fairport quickly responded with two more goals in the final 0:33 with Hendricks scoring back to back unassisted goals off outside shots.  Fairport led 8-4 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Penfield added two and Fairport only added one.  Schwab scored again with another dodge from the top and Matthew Schoeneck scored with an outside shot.  Fairport’s goal was scored with an outside shot from Bell.  Fairport led 9-6 going into the final quarter.  Both teams added goals in the final quarter: Fairport (Bell x2, Hendricks, Bucci) and Penfield (Cummings, Joey Barboza, Schwab).  In the cage for Penfield, Cooper Allen played the entire contest and recorded 6 saves.  For Fairport, Jake Santini recorded 8 saves.
