Wayne Wins on Cradle for a Cure Night

- Wayne hosted their fifth annual “Cradle for a Cure” event today and defeated Gananda 23-5.  The “Cradle for a Cure” event began five years ago as a fundraising/awareness event after a local lacrosse player received a cancer diagnosis.  Every year since, Wayne has hosted a multigame event with boys and girls lax with the hope of donating to both local charities and a local family in need of assistance.  Earlier in the evening in the girls’ contest, Waterloo defeated Wayne 17-9 (HERE).

The game was close for a half, before Wayne took off and scored 10 goals in the third quarter.  Wayne scored the opening goal and never trailed.  Both teams defense was strong in the first half; however, the Eagles offense adapted much better than the Panther offense.  Gananda goalie Jason Good finished the first half with 7 saves and made multiple point blank saves to keep the Panthers in the game for the first 24 minutes.  He finished the game with 14 total saves.  For Wayne, the long stick defense was standout.  Close defensemen Stephen Houlihan, Jalen Matteson and Bryce Saba and LSM Joe Camp were all exceptional throughout the entire contest.  Houlihan recorded 3 one-on-one takes against the Panthers and was a constant thorn for Gananda with his slides.

In the first quarter, Wayne scored three goals and held Gananda to only one.  The opening goal was scored with an inside feed from Thomas Knapp to Billy Thompson.  Gananda responded with a fast-break goal by Brett Cunningham.  Wayne scored the next two goals.  Their second goal began with an interception by goalie Jared Laird.  He stepped out of the crease and caught the ball before sending it up on fast-break to Dominic Stramonine.  Laird finished with 5 saves and 3 interceptions.  The final goal of the opening quarter was a feed from behind the crease by Cooper Pieroni to Zach Boyatzies.  The Eagles led 3-1 after 12 minutes.

In the second half, there were three man-up goals as the Eagles began to pull away.  Wayne’s final goal of the half was an impressive fast-break with time expiring.  Houlihan began the play with a straight check to get the ball to the ground.  Camp picked up the loose ball and looked all the way up field to Jon Ecker as he cut to the crease on a fast-break.  In the second half, Wayne kept adding goals.  Face off midfielder Michael Leckinger had a good game at the face-off and kept possession with the Eagles much of the game.  As the fourth quarter began, Gananda began to sub in the remaining players from their roster.
