Horan Scores Game Winner in Second Overtime

- Webster Thomas took their first lead with an overtime goal from Colin Horan in the second overtime period to defeat Penn Yan 9-8.  The Mustangs led for major portions of the game and had a three goal lead with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.  Thomas scored the final four goals of the match-up to force overtime and take the win.

Penn Yan’s Dylan Stape scored the opening goal unassisted to give the Mustangs the 1-0 lead.  That lead held for the entire quarter.  Thomas scored their first goal 13:04 into the match. Trevor Ford scored, unassisted.  He finished with 2g-1a for the Titans.  Penn Yan continued their scoring in the second and after goals by Austin Ablumbergs and Connor Fingar (2) the Mustangs led 4-2 at the half.

In the third, Thomas scored back to back goals to tie the game for the third time (4-4).  Jacob Allen and Brad Smith scored off assists from CJ Battiaglia and Nick Mabe.  Penn Yan responded with two goals to end the quarter and go back up 6-4 after three quarters.  Thomas scored the opening goal of the fourth with another unassisted goal from Ford.  Fingar added another 2 goals to put the Mustangs up 8-5 with 10:03 remaining.  That was the last Mustang goal of the game.  Thomas’ Smith scored two minutes later to cut the lead to three.  Mabe and Hill scored in the final two minutes to bring the game within one.  The game tying goal was scored with 0:52 remaining in regulation with Ford assisting Matt Hill.

In the first overtime period, Penn Yan won the face-off and had the first shot at the cage.  Matt Yonko recorded a save to give the Titans an offensive shot.  Thomas took 5 shots (1 on cage) in the first overtime period.  In the second overtime period, Thomas won the draw and didn’t give the Mustangs a shot at the cage.  They once again went with volume in shooting and recorded another seven shots (3 on cage) before Horan’s goal.
