Penfield 8 - Fairport 7 in Overtime

-  SPORTSFIVE REPORT:  Penfield stood on the shoulders of their two newest All-Americans, Max Spaan and Willie Klan, to secure an 8-7 overtime victory over 2014 Class A Champion Fairport. The Red Raiders fought hard throughout the contest, but in the end, the Patriots scored the final two goals to secure their win.

Willie KlanKlan finished the game at 50%, but that does little to demonstrate the effect he had on the Patriots. He made a number of strong saves, and many of his goals against were scored during man-up offense for Fairport or in fast-break situations. The biggest save of the game came in the final minute, when he stopped a shot from Reese Burek to hold the game at a 7-7 tie. Spaan was equally as demonstrative on the offensive side. He finished with 4g-2a, including the game winning goal in overtime. There were only two goals that Spaan did not score or assist for the Patriots.

Fairport vs Penfield

Penfield took to scoring quickly. They added two goals in the first two minutes of play. Senior Carter Jordan, who finished the game with 3a, came down the field and found Spaan open across the crease to the bottom corner. This goal (0:22 into the opening quarter) was the same play that won the game for the Patriots 0:25 into overtime. Spaan came back on the next play to assist Kevin Wall from behind the cage. Penfield's early lead was held until the third quarter when Fairport took a brief lead.Penfield vs Fairport

Two more minutes of back and forth play put Fairport on the board. Sophomore TJ Hendricks scored the opening goal with a sweep across the top of the restraining line. He finished with 3g for the Red Raiders. Brandon Buse scored the next goal for the Patriots with a drive from the right flat. Less than one minute later Fairport tied the game with another sweep across the top. This one was scored by Matt Gasbarre. The first quarter ended with Penfield holding the 3-2 lead.

In the second quarter, both teams added two goals to have Penfield maintain the single goal lead going into halftime. Jordan recorded his second assist, once again during man-up, with another feed to Spaan, this time around the outside. Hendricks brought the Red Raiders back a tie game with back to back goals. The first was a feed down the left side from Burek. The second was another man-up goal with an outside shot that was fed from Dylan DeLorme. Fairport tied the score for the first time in the contest with 7:41 remaining in the second quarter. Before the quarter expired, Joey Barboza retook the lead for the Patriots. Spaan picked up a loose ball on the outside and fed into the crease to give Barboza the goal. Penfield led 5-4 going into halftime.

Fairport vs PenfieldThe third quarter belonged to Fairport. The Red Raiders scored three goals and held the Patriots to only one. They came from a one goal deficit to a one goal lead. Play began in the third quarter with a two minute non-releasable penalty against Penfield. The Red Raiders capitalized with Cameron Gebhardt scoring to tie the game. His goal came after the ball was stripped from Klan during a clear that resulted in Gebhardt having a shot at the open cage. On the ensuring face-off the Patriots brought the ball down to score man-down. James Stoler took a hard shot at the cage that was saved by Tyler Wetzel. The save came off Wetzel`s chest and was scooped up by Spaan to score man-down. Fairport re-tied the game with an unassisted sweep across the top by Jake Bucci. With 2:11 remaining in the fourth quarter, Fairport scored their final goal of the contest and took the first lead of the day. Kyle McAvoy scored off a feed from Michael Modesti with a hard corner shot from the left flat.

Penfield vs FairportPenfield held the Red Raider scoreless for the final 14 minutes and for 8 shots (3 on cage). They added two goals of their own. The first came with 6:08 left in regulation to tie the game at 7-7. Hunter Savitcheff scored his lone goal of the contest with a drive around the back of the cage and a high shot into the upper corner. The Patriots could not get a shot off in the final six minutes. The Red Raiders kept up the pressure and with just under a minute left to play, Burek took a hard shot at the cage. Klan came up with his biggest save of the night to keep the Patriots in the game and the score tied. With time coming to a close, a flag was through against the Red Raiders for too many men on the field. The Patriots had the ball stripped with 0:11 left on the clock. They chose to hold the ball and take possession going into overtime. The wager paid off with Jordan and Spaan connecting on the same man-up play that started the scoring this game.

Fairport vs Penfield

One of the major factors in the win for Penfield was face-off midfielder James Stoler. He finished the game at 67% with only two non-technical losses during the contest (he was 10/12 on non-technical draws). He also led his team with 10 ground balls. He was a key factor in giving the Patriots ball-time and as a result kept the ahead for the majority of the game. For the Red Raiders. Wetzel finished with six saves between the pipes and a team leading six ground balls. Defenseman Dan Smith and Hendricks both added four ground balls to the count for the Red Raiders.

Penfield continues on to play last year's Class A Runner up, Pittsford, on Wednesday at St. John Fisher. The Patriots played a close game with the Panthers earlier in the season. They lost 10-7 in one of Pittsford's closest contests of the season.
